Routes in Pavlovsky Park. Excursions in Pavlovsk

Personal Tours offers you various individual excursions around St. Petersburg (sightseeing tours, walking tours) and suburbs (Peterhof, Pushkin, Gatchina, etc.).

All our excursions begin and end at a convenient location for guests.

When conducting an individual excursion, it is important for the guide to understand what is interesting for you and what to focus on in the excursion, and what is better to omit. It is important for the guide to convey to the guests not just formal information about the sights and cultural places of the city, but to tell unusual facts or stories related to them.

    Attractions Pavlovsk

The construction of the royal residence and its territory took about 50 years. During this time, a large number of monuments, pavilions, sculptures of Greek gods, interesting landscape areas. During the tour, you will visit the following places:

    • Pavlovsk Palace. The royal residence can be seen even from the farthest corners of the park. It is a symmetrical, horseshoe-shaped building. The building is decorated with stucco and appearance resembles a manor. It will be no less interesting to see the interior decoration: interiors decorated in the Greek style, collections of paintings and porcelain, an Egyptian lobby, a dance hall.
    • Pavlovsky park. Its picturesque landscapes are famous throughout Europe. The park is located in the valley of the Slavyanka River and covers about 600 hectares. Its landscapes combine the naturalness of Russian nature and grooming. The area of the park is divided into 9 zones. Small bridges are considered its highlight: Centaur, Pig-iron, Viscontiev and Oleniy.
    • Pavilions and colonnades. Walking through the park, you will be impressed by the variety of sculptural ensembles, monuments and other structures located on its territory. One of the most beautiful corners is the Apollo colonnade, in the center of which there is a sculpture of a god. Must-see places to visit are the Rossi and Aviary Pavilions, as well as the Ancient Greek-style Temple of Friendship.
    • Own garden. This is a very cozy part of the park, where the owners of the residence loved to relax. Its centerpiece is an antique portico with a statue of the Three Graces depicting goddesses holding a vase.

I think I won't be mistaken if I say that Pavlovsky park can be called one of the most beautiful not only in Russia, but in the whole world. Here the regular and landscape parts, pavilions and sculptures, the picturesque Slavyanka river and numerous ponds, bridges and baths coexist harmoniously. It is impossible to inspect it in one day.

The history of the creation of Pavlovsky Park

It was presented by Empress Catherine II to her son, Tsarevich Pavel Petrovich and his wife Maria Feodorovna in 1777. And soon the construction of the summer residence of the Grand Duke and his wife began here, and after Paul's accession to the throne in 1796 Pavlovsk became the imperial residence.

Even during the life of Pavel, who preferred, Pavlovsk passed to Empress Maria Feodorovna. After her death in 1828, Pavlovsk was inherited by the Romanov family, and after the 1917 revolution it was transformed into a museum.

Great damage to Pavlovsk in general and Pavlovsky park and palace in particular was inflicted during the Great Patriotic War. After the victory, the Pavlovsk Museum-Reserve was restored thanks to the activities of the director Anna Ivanovna Zelenova.

The most famous architects of the 18th - early 19th centuries took part in the creation of Pavlovsky Park: C. Cameron, V. Brenna, A. Voronikhin, G. Quarenghi, J. Thomas de Thomon, C. Rossi ... On an area of about 600 hectares a grandiose palace was created -park ensemble.

Pavlovsky Park consists of nine landscape areas:

    • Red valley
    • Valley of ponds

    C. Cameron, who supervised the construction of the park in 1780-1786, determined the layout of the main areas, laid the main roads. Under his leadership, the Pavlovsk Palace and many park pavilions were built. In 1796-1801, construction was continued under the direction of the architect V. Brenna. In 1801-1828, the work was headed by P. Gonzago.

The main attractions of Pavlovsky Park, photos

Now let's walk along the paths of the park and take a look at its main attractions.

    The mood now is squirrel

In fact, all guests of our city are taken on excursions to Peterhof, Yekaterinensky Park, Aleksandrovsky Park and Pavlovsky Park. Pavlovsky Park is considered one of the best landscape parks not only in Russia, but also in Europe. It is located in a very beautiful place- in the valley of the Slavyanka river.

Unlike a park that has a regular layout, a landscape park assumes only a slight alteration of natural nature - there are no straight paths and clipped trees, and its outskirts may more resemble a forest. But if you look closely, you will notice that in ordinary nature, trees never grow as they do here - they are artificially planted in beautiful groups. You can talk about Pavlovsky Park for a very, very long time, and the hour of walking that guests of our city give to sightseeing is still so little =) Today I will show several favorite places in the park

Not far from the Cold Bath is the so-called Family grove, each tree of which was planted simultaneously with the appearance of a new member of the royal family. This tradition was started by Maria Feodorovna back in 1785. The family of Paul I and Maria Feodorovna had ten children, when they grew up and got married, the trees were planted in honor of their chosen ones, and then the children that appeared. Thus, by the time of the death of Maria Feodorovna, there were 50 trees in the garden.

On the this moment The grove consists of conifers and this is appropriate place if you suddenly want privacy and silence. Yes, this is where the protein is fed;)

Temple of Friendship Is a structure that resembles an antique temple, erected in the form of a rotunda with 16 columns. The building is located in an amazingly beautiful place on the banks of the Slavyanka near the grove. The temple of friendship has an amazing property - from a distance it looks small and airy, but from up close it seems monumental and solemn.

The building was created in 1784 on the initiative of Prince Pavel Petrovich and his wife Maria Feodorovna as a token of gratitude to Catherine II for the lands he had donated. The building was designed by Charles Cameron and it was his first construction in Pavlovsky Park.

Initially, the blank wall of the rotunda was painted white, but from the 19th century it acquired a yellow color. Light entered the building through a glass hole in the dome. Cameron, worried that the light would not be enough, ordered a special magnifying glass from England.

Above the entrance there is an inscription of thanks addressed to the empress, and in a niche opposite the entrance there was a statue of the goddess of wisdom Minevra, whose face resembled Catherine II. Inside the building there was carved furniture, the walls were decorated with stucco moldings.

The Temple of Friendship was the venue for chamber concerts for which a select audience gathered. In the summertime, sculptures from the museum's funds are often exhibited here.

Parade field- This is a part of Pavlovsky Park, starting at the end of Lipovaya Alley. Previously, military maneuvers and parades were held on this territory, hence its name.

The development of this area was carried out in two stages. In the early 1790s, under the leadership of Vincenzo Brenna, a parade ground was built here, where Paul I personally conducted parades and exercises of soldiers. During this period, the territory was expanded to the future Rosovopavilionnye ponds and enclosed with a cast-iron fence.

After the death of the emperor in 1801, Pavlovsk ceased to be a ceremonial royal residence, but remained the property of the royal family. In 1803-1813, Pietro Gonzago was involved in the development of this area.

And soon, instead of the once dusty parade ground, a magnificent landscape park appears - meadows with flowers, groups of trees on the shores of lakes and shrubs of various colors. The park is beautiful at any time of the year - in summer and spring there are many flowering plants, in winter spruce and pine trees look great against the background of white snow, and autumn will delight you with a bright golden carpet.

Under the leadership of Gonzago, the Rose Pavilion ponds were built on the territory of the region (these are two ponds connected by a narrow strait, across which the Oleniy Bridge is thrown). In the middle of the pond, the Lieven island was reclaimed, named after Countess Charlotte Lieven, educator of princes and princesses in the house of Paul I. Far from the alleys, a modest monument in the form of a column with a metal end was erected, also dedicated to this woman, who became a good angel of the Romanov family.

In the Paradnoe Pole area, not far from Lipovaya Alley, there is a mass grave where workers and soldiers who died during the revolution and civil war are buried.

Peel Tower- this is the most original building of Pavlovsky Park, built in the style of the then fashionable pastoral (rural) buildings. The idea of the building belongs to Pietro Ganzago, and the project was drawn up by the architect Vincenzo Brenna. The name of the Pil-Tower comes from the word "saw", since this place used to be a sawmill, powered by the pressure of the water from the Slavyanka River.
The stone building, created in 1797, was two-storey, had a round shape with a cone-shaped roof covered with thatched. An internal staircase with a railing made of birch trunks led to the second floor. Later Voronikhin replaced this staircase with an external stone one, and instead of a water mill he built a bridge with beautiful arch and metal railings.
The outer walls were covered with murals depicting the beautiful building destroyed. But only in appearance this building looked poor and wretched, inside it was a luxurious salon in which Maria Fedorovna loved to rest. This richly decorated room contained a marble fireplace and mahogany table, as well as three sofas with pillows embroidered with gold and silk threads. The salon was decorated with paintings and stucco moldings, vases and clocks.
On the first floor there was a utility room, in which, according to legend, the guilty and not fulfilling their duties were served. Pil-Tower is one of the most expressive buildings in Pavlovsk, reminiscent of a castle in miniature.

In the design of landscape parks, artificial ruins were often used, because, compared to the new building, the ruins fit very well into the green landscape without creating unnecessarily sharp contrasts. Many cascades have been built in Pavlovsky Park, one of them is Ruinous, created in 1794 by the architect Vincenzo Brenna.

This structure, built at the confluence of the Lower Starosilvian pond with Slavyanka, successfully connected two forest areas - Old and New Sylvia.

Vincenzo Brenna gave an elegant architectural design to each of the cascades built in the park.
The viewing platform of the building is decorated with dilapidated vases, pedestals with lions lying on them, made of tuff. The architect used the trunks of freshly cut birch trees as a fence. Fragments of antique figures and fragments of a column could be seen nearby.
You can see the full-flowing Ruin Cascade only during the period of active snow melting.

The pavilion was built in 1782 by the architect Charles Cameron and was originally intended for keeping livestock and storing milk, which is why it got its name - Milk.
In the middle of the 18th century, despite the dominance of the classical style in architecture, the fashion for pastoral, that is, the rural style (pastoralis in Latin means "shepherd") penetrates into Russia, in particular, when decorating landscape parks, it has become fashionable to use elements of rural life.

Empress Maria Feodorovna wrote out a sketch for the construction of a farm from the province of Etup, located on the territory of modern France, and wished to see an exact copy of it in Pavlovsk. However, Charles Cameron did not just copy the building and implemented several of his ideas. So, a bell was installed on the roof, calling the cows for milking, and in order to give the building a romantic touch, he let a birch through the roof. The building is made in the form of a medieval building, built of dark stone and resembles a German farm or tavern.

Initially, one farm room housed cows, two more rooms were used to store milk, and the third was designed in the form luxurious hall for relaxation, decorated with beautiful furniture and an elegant service. As a result, the contrast between the gentlemen's hall and the adjoining cattle house was too stark. Therefore, in 1786, all the animals were transferred to the built stockyard.

Throughout its history, the Dairy has burned several times and has not survived in its original form. Back in 1895, the roof was lost in a fire, along with a hole for a birch tree. But the Nazis inflicted even greater damage to the building during the Great Patriotic War. Now there is a cafe here.

For now =) next time I will show you a completely unusual estate with a very mystical history;)
