Resort infrastructure

The snow covers of the Stubai Glacier, resistant to any weather changes, allow tourists to ski on its slopes all year round. The altitude at which the resort areas of Neustift, Fulpmes and Mieders are located starts from 960 m, so ski season here lasts from December to April.

Ski resort Elmau

If you are planning to visit the Tyrolean town of Ellmau, Austria will appear before you from a new side: here you can plunge into the atmosphere of a traditional Alpine village. It is not for nothing that the Tyrolean music folk festival takes place every year in Elmau. The town is picturesquely located near mountain range Wilder-Kaiser. Elmau is part of the Ski Welt resort region.

The Elmau ski area is located at an altitude of 860-1957 m at a distance of 80 km from Innsbruck and Salzburg and 120 km from Munich. You can get from the airport by buses from the Wilder Kaiser resort, by railway or order an individual transfer from the hotel.

Tourists travel through mountainous areas using lifts, of which:

You can stay in Elmau in apartments or hotels of varying levels of comfort (from three to five stars).

Ellmauer Skischule is one of the oldest and most famous schools in this mountainous region. A trial lesson for children 3-14 years old will cost €40, a six-day course will cost €186. For adults, a course for beginner skiers (4 days) will cost €180. One hour with an individual instructor costs €70. You can also rent here necessary equipment. When ordering training online on the school website, a discount is provided (up to 10% when renting equipment online).

The resort has several children's rooms for different ages.

In Elmau, as elsewhere, other entertainment is also thought out. The entire nightlife of the city is concentrated in several bars. Elmau also has several indoor swimming pools and a water park. Fans of fun and noisy parties can head to the heart of Tyrol - Kitzbühel, which is located just 17 km from Ellmau.

Fulpmes and Neustift

Fulpmes and Neustift are two resorts in the vicinity of Innsbruck, stretching along the river bed and practically merging with each other. Today it is a place for active winter holiday with developed tourism infrastructure called the Stubaital Valley. You can send both beginner skiers and more experienced skiers here, who prefer, however, fairly calm skiing. Many vacation with families.

The Fulpmes and Neustift trails

The Stubai Glaciers are 60 km of ski slopes that are suitable for both beginner skiers and more experienced individuals. Doskers will certainly enjoy the fan park, half-pipe and boardercross track near Fulpmes.

The Elfer ski area starts from Neustift, offering only 10 km of slopes (warm-up before the main skiing on Stubai). There are equal numbers of “blue”, “red” and “black” slopes. The “black” route (3 km long, 1000 m drop) is steep, but quite calm in profile, well-groomed.

Well-prepared skiers will be interested in the Schlick-2000 area located 25 km from the glacier in the village of Fulpmes (maximum ascent point 2260 m). This is 2 km of one “black” slope (quite steep, well-maintained descent, ice in places; elevation difference 1100 m), 5 km of “red” slopes (pleasant skiing on well-groomed slopes) and 7 km of fairly difficult “blue” slopes. In general, this ski area is recommended for well-trained skiers.

And yet people go to Fulpmes and Neustift primarily for the famous Stubai glacier. A free bus runs to it at short intervals across the entire valley.

Activities and attractions in the Stubaital Valley

The main attractions here are the temples and cathedrals of the valley: the Blutschwitzerkapelle chapel in the town of Medraz, the Church of St. Vitus, the oldest Sagerer church in Fulpmes, the Schlicker Alm chapel built at an altitude of 1616 m. Take a break from organs and vaulted temple walls at the blacksmith museum in Fulpmes, the Eispickel museum in Kampl, the Försterhaus museum of Tyrol history and life and the ancient Grain Mill, the only surviving working mill in Neustift.

From where they made daily trips to the Stubai Glacier, and some to Hintertux, Sölden, Pitztal, Countertal.
The 1st day of skiing, and the subsequent ones, reminded me of skiing in Gudauri :)). The Stubai Glacier greeted us with full milk! Visibility was practically zero, it was snowing and windy, we didn’t know the trails yet, so the skiing was very careful and short. When I was riding, I could barely see the 2nd pole, which I used to navigate. If you can see 2 poles in a row, then the slope is gentle; if the 2nd pole is not immediately visible, it means it is lower and the slope is steeper. The lifts worked here until 16-16:30, but by 2-3 o’clock in the afternoon there was no one left on the mountain. Moreover, what made me leave the mountain was a slight clouding of my mind/dizziness - I don’t know exactly what to call it medically correctly. I read somewhere that a person goes crazy if he stays in a monochromatic room for a long time, or if he is surrounded by perfectly even, straight or perpendicular lines. In order not to go crazy, there must be some kind of “flaw” somewhere - a point, an unevenness, an irregularity, something that the eye clings to, and this allows a person to somehow navigate in space. So in this “milk” such orientation is easily lost. I remember that I was slowly sliding along a gentle slope, because... there was only one (otherwise it would be possible to navigate by the skiers - where to go and what’s next), below and around it was white-white, that is, my eyes see the same thing all the time, with my body I feel my movement, and then suddenly, my head jerks back sharply. I realized that I had already stopped, but due to inertia, my body and brain reproduced the picture and sensations that I was still moving. So after that I ate some chocolate and went down to the gondola.

Having a similar experience with Gudauri (on the 1st day it was the same, but we still rode there in the pouring rain), I was not at all upset, but on the contrary, I began to wait with anticipation to see what Stubai looks like in sunny weather, which will definitely come the next day. Good weather I didn’t have to wait long. On the 2nd day we went to Sölden (a report will follow), and on the 3rd and subsequent days we rode in Stubai and other glaciers. Some happy photos:)))

Now about Stubai. This is the glacier's website http://www.stubaier-gletscher.com, there is a lot of useful information there. From what they write, the main value of Stubai is the long season - from mid/late September to the end of June. Cable cars and ski lifts: 25 cable cars and lifts, including 5 funiculars, 7 chair lifts, 9 drag lifts. Trails and routes: 110 km of downhill slopes, of which 46 km are easy, 39 km are intermediate, 4 km are difficult, 19 km are ski routes. But this is all data on winter conditions. I specially made a map of the trails from the website that are now open. So, as you can see, the ski area is almost 2 times smaller. Now the snow park rope there is closed (it is marked in yellow on the map), but when we were skiing it was open.

It turns out, just like in Gudauri, there are 2 main chairlifts and different trails and lifts go around them. It was possible to descend down to an altitude of 2300m. Below, of course, in the second half of the day there was already a slight mess. But in the morning, i.e. from 8:30 it was possible to drive practically on concrete. The retractor ran regularly during the day, so you could always ride on fresh corduroy. There were not many people in May; mostly athletes from children and youth to more experienced ones were training. The impression was that in May the main skaters were Poles and Russians, there were more of them than German- and English-speaking ones, and there were very few French- and Italian-speaking ones. I also smelled Romanians and Bulgarians.

I love such wide fields and the absence of skiers on the slopes!!! And freeriders have already completely covered all the surrounding areas.

I didn’t find any difficult trails for myself, only blue and red ones were open, most of the trails were wide. The blue ones could be raced well.

Regarding prices. They have a fairly flexible payment system for ski passes. You could buy a ski pass for several days in a row, or you could, like I did - 5 days out of 7. It turned out to be quite profitable when one day was spent on a trip to Innsbruck, and not the one that was originally planned. There is also a discount for a group of 10 people. As a result, for 5 days of skiing the cost of the ski pass was 152.3E, 2E is a deposit for the ski pass, then it is returned.

This is the route to the very bottom, to the gondola at 2300m.

Gamsgarten is the starting point where skiing begins and where it ends; you can only ski down to the very bottom in winter.

From May 5, travel from our Fulpmes (40 minutes on the road) cost 5E one way, but for repeated visits to the glacier you can buy a weekly pass for 20.9E, which was done.

This is a center for active winter recreation with a developed tourist infrastructure. There are hotels of all categories - from well-equipped farms and peasant houses to luxurious five-star hotels. The resorts are popular with families who prefer active recreation.

In total there are approximately 110 km of slopes with a height difference from 1750 to 3210 meters, serviced by 25 modern ski lifts. The Elfer ski area begins from Neustift - a total of 10 km of slopes (about 30% each of “blue”, “red” and “black”), which are considered a warm-up before the main skiing on Stubai. Plus, about 50 km of trails (mostly “red”) are laid closer to the glacier. The local “black” track, 3 km long, is quite steep (1000 m drop), but relatively “calm” in profile and well-groomed. In Neustift itself there are about 35 restaurants and cafes, 3 discos, a sports and entertainment center with an indoor swimming pool, saunas and solarium, indoor tennis courts, a bar and restaurant, as well as many other recreational facilities.

The Schlick 2000 area located near Fulpmes is of great interest to well-trained skiers. His highest point- 2260 meters, and the main “highlight” is a two-kilometer “black” piste with an elevation difference of about 1100 meters, plus 5 km of “red” pistes (extremely pleasant skiing on well-groomed slopes) and 7 km of “blue” pistes (not the steepest, but educational riding is difficult). This area is recommended for well-trained skiers and boardercross fans.

But the hallmark of the region is the famous glacier Stubai www.stubaier-gletscher.com - the largest and most easily accessible glacier ski area in Austria. It is indeed very well located - by car from Innsbruck you can get to the lower cable car stations in just 45 minutes, and from Fulpmes to the glacier it is about 25 km. A free bus runs throughout the valley to the glacier at short intervals.

It is impossible to calculate the total number of slopes here - skiing goes on almost the entire surface of the glacier, suitable for skiing - and these are almost 16 peaks and about a hundred valleys and valleys, most of them uninhabited. However, it is usually estimated that there are 15.5 km of prepared pistes directly in the ski area of ​​the glacier (45% "blue", 40% "red" and 15% "black"), including the 10 km long Wilde Grubn piste with a vertical drop of 1500 m The longest (and most difficult) section is traditionally considered to be an almost fifteen-kilometer link of trails from the top of Downferner to the Muttersberg plain, although any experienced skier will certainly offer his own options - the possibilities here are wide. The slopes are serviced by 24 modern lifts.

Also here you can find the highest restaurant in Austria - Top of Tyrol (3150 m), a ski kindergarten BIG Family Ski Camp (from 3 to 15 years old), a first-class snow park, a large number of all kinds of sports complexes, spa and fitness centers (mainly in hotels), sports clubs and grounds, bars and restaurants.

A one-day Skipässe Stubaier Gletscher ski pass will cost from 28.5 to 58 euros depending on the season, skiing period and age, for 6 days - 90-201 euros. It is possible to purchase a separate subscription for each ski region or a Gletscher-Skipass, which unites the ski regions Patscherkofel, Axamer Lizum, Glungezer, Rangger Köpfl, Kühtai, Schlick 2000, Stubaier Gletscher and Nordpark (a six-day pass will cost 380 euros for an adult and 108 for a child).

The duration of the ski season in the valley is from mid-November to mid-April, and on the Stubai Glacier it is almost all year round. The best snow in the highlands can be found from December 15 to April 30. However, it should be taken into account that even during this period there is not much snow on the glacier - most of the underlying surface is ice.

You can get to the Stubaital resorts from Innsbruck (from its airport it is about 15-35 km to any of the resort villages in the valley). It is also easy to travel by train from Munich (about 170 km by road), Vienna (400 km) or Bolzano (110 km) via Innsbruck.
