Cambodia - Laos

There are two border points through which you can cross the border with Laos by river and by land.

- Down the river:

On the river (if you are coming from Laos) it is better to hire a boat from Don Khone to Voeung Kam ($2-5). From Voeung Kam (this is Cambodia) you will reach the city of Steng Treng for $ 10. Then you can transfer to the Sorya Transport bus going to Phnom Penh ($ 10.5).

From Phnom Penh to the Lao border, you can take a taxi to the city of Steng Treng, and from there take a minibus to the border. You can also use the ferry - $ 5 per person, or hire a private boat - $ 30, travel time from 1 to 3 hours.

... Early in the morning we began to load our belongings and bodies into an SUV that we had hired as an interstate taxi, by the way. Having taken a liking, rather, to the useless Viktoralekseich than to the dull wrinkled us, the employees of our cozy smiled heartily in the end and wished every success. At least, I imagined it that way, because there was no way to understand their emotional chirping in the still alien, to my shame, Thai language.

Wiping away the mean tears of parting, we smiled at our cleanliness fairies in the condominium, parted with the twins and bougainvilleas and began to roll out of Pattaya towards Cambodia in the chill of the air conditioner. We had 9 hours to enjoy the trip.

How did you get from Pattaya to Cambodia?

To the melancholic sounds of domestic rock, the selection of which I so inadvertently approved aloud at the very beginning. For already by the middle of the way, the speakers in the car burst out with such, slightly frightening people, sounds of mu:

The journey went smoothly and smoothly. In front, the driver and our companion engaged in frantic small talk, jumping at breakneck speed from the global jewelry business to Cambodia's rainy season. When there was absolutely nothing to talk about, as usual, they switched to gadgets.

Alexey Viktorovich and I modestly remained silent, rolling our eyes all the way, looking thoughtfully out of the jeep window. Viktoralekseich slept halfway, half jumped around the cabin, another third thoughtfully sucked his breast and only at the end deigned to express dissatisfaction with many hours of physical inactivity with a characteristic deafening exclamation. The driver of the carriage was very upset by the latter, but such is his karma - to carry all kinds of annoying passengers.

A couple of "Shershavins", which the Pattaya-Sihanoukville path was remembered for, nevertheless happened.

1. Thailand-Cambodia border

As the experienced farangs and barangs guessed, we crossed the border in the area of the Thai city of Trata, the Cham Yeam border checkpoint - this way to Sihanoukville from Pattaya is two times shorter than across the Aranyaprathet-Poipet border. Cham Yeam is less popular than the second option. I don’t know if this is due to a 20-minute delay when passing through passport control at the exit from the Kingdom of Thailand.
Border officials were interested in the pristine passport of Viktoralekseich, who had never left the country before. In this regard, the document did not contain a single stamp on entry or exit to the Land of Smiles or any other. The border guards looked at the Thai-style birth certificate for a long time, took copies of it and pasted the passports somewhere for themselves, wrote down something, asked me something like whether this was my direct descendant.

Like many emphatically law-abiding people, I often find myself inexplicably nervous about crossing any boundary. After about five minutes, the hitch had already begun to bite her nails, but another 10 minutes passed, and the Thais still slapped an exit stamp on the children's passport. True, something was signed by hand under the seal. Perhaps there will be among my readers enlightened connoisseurs of the Thai language who will not be too lazy to translate this ligature.

Contrast between Pattaya and Cambodia

And this memory was imprinted on my memory card with iron strength, and I will never forget how Cambodia, which I had already seen, opened up to me in a new way...

Overcoming the path from Pattaya to Sihanoukville, in addition to such a domesticated one, it was necessary to cross three more provinces - Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat. For the first three hours, the views outside the window were almost Thai typical: lush palm trees, shops at every intersection, squeaky-trained roads, large supermarkets, civilized gas stations with shining cleanliness and worthy of expensive spas, roadside restrooms. Everything is as usual: bright, magnificent, rich. Not even like that - in BoKhatom, in Thai.

Sihanoukville met with rain

In Trat, landscapes and exteriors of houses began to subtly change. The first, with their mountains, slightly resembled the nature of Krabi, the second smelled of French rolls, vignettes and curlicues. Cambodia is next!

Disposed to the conversation, a highly experienced barang, our driver named Gleb inspiredly told that once the province of Trat belonged to Cambodia, and the Thais shamelessly “squeezed” it from their uncomplaining neighbors not so long ago. And that just before the border we passed the narrowest piece of land belonging to Thailand: between the mountains of Cambodia on one side and the Gulf of Thailand on the other, there is a layer from the Land of Smiles only 50 meters wide.

All this is interesting, but something else stirred my mind. If someone had told me before that an interstate border that does not actually exist can separate two countries with different nature, smell and atmosphere, I would smile condescendingly at such sentiments. But here I myself acted as a sentimental young lady, because the following came out.

The beaches of Sihanoukville are beautiful, but a little gloomy now

We left Thailand with its impenetrable jungles and subequatorial nature, and ended up in Cambodia, also a subequatorial country, but with strikingly different landscapes. Air, mountains, forests, roads, people - everything here is like the same Thailand but a little different. I will not bore my patient readers with details, and I will write a separate article about this contrast, because there is no limit to my imagination and verbosity, and we only have a brief report on the move for our closest and most sympathetic.

Our journey ended as peacefully as it began. Sihanoukville, Ekarichi Street, the home-office of our significant friends (they are significant, at least, because we once met Alekseviktorovich with their light hand), a carefully prepared dinner from local sea fish and an unusually cool night at a party.

Tomorrow's minimum program included renting a motorbike, express search and moving from hospitable friends. About our new ones in a real Khmer village with beautiful blue-eyed cows, and - in the following posts ...

With wishes, it is also easy to change countries and cities of residence, not to be mortally tied to places of permanent residence, sincerely yours, migratory graphomaniac, Marta.

Traveling on your own is much more interesting than buying complex tours and using the services of tour operators. Rubric "How to get there" I will periodically talk about the routes of my trips and some features on the way: transfers between cities, passing borders, etc. I hope that some of my recommendations will be useful for independent travelers.

Route: Thailand → Cambodia → Vietnam

Cities: Bangkok → Siem Reap → Phnom Penh → Ho Chi Minh City
(Bangkok – Siem Reap – Phnom Penh – Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon)

Total distance: about 1000 km.

Plot №1: Bangkok - Siem Reap

In Siem Reap there is international Airport(IATA: REP), so you can get from Bangkok (Thailand) to Siem Reap (Angkor, Cambodia) by plane. However, below I will consider only options for moving on the ground. The Bangkok - Siem Reap section can be divided into two sub-sections: before and after the border with Cambodia. There are two main ground transfer options from Bangkok to the border: train or bus; from the border to Siem Reap: regular bus or minibus for 10 people.

Step 1. Bangkok → Poipet

Plan A: by train (5.5 hours on the way). To get to Poipet, you need to take a train to the border town of Aranyaprathet (Aranyaprathet, Thai. อรัญประเทศ), then take a tuk-tuk to the very border. From the main railway station of Bangkok (Hua Lamphong Railway Station, Thai: สถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพง) two trains leave daily - at 5:55 and at 13:05. Tickets for Aranyaprathet can be bought just before departure at the station. However, I recommend stopping by the station the day before departure. In my case, it turned out that the train traffic was suspended due to flooding, so I followed "Plan B". The fare is only about 50 baht (1.20 euros). Trains are only third class, but should be quite comfortable. Araniapratet is 255 km away, the morning train arrives at its destination at 11:35. In order to have time to cross the border on the same day and safely get to Siem Reap without spending the night in Poipet, I recommend using the morning option. After arriving at the Araniaprathet station, there will be tuk-tuks at the station, which will take you to the border (about 6 km) in 10 minutes and 100 baht. Tell the driver in English that you are on your way to the Cambodian border in Poipet.

Advice: contact with questions in the "Information" window, they understand and speak English.

Plan b: by bus (4 hours on the way). There are several bus stations in Bangkok. I was leaving from the east (Eastern Bus Station, at the Ekkamai subway station). Buses of the same company run from the bus station directly to the border in Poipet at 6:15, 8:30, 10:30, 12:30. The fare is 220 baht (5.- euros), including a glass of water. At the box office, just say that you are in Cambodia, they will show you in which window to buy a ticket and which platform to board. Buses are not the most comfortable, but with air conditioning.

This is what the eastern bus station looks like.

Step 2 Crossing the Thailand/Cambodia border

Passing the borders in Poipet with the acquisition of a Cambodian visa on the spot is not as difficult as it is sometimes written and told about. The only and most important rule: do not trust the locals and ignore those who pester with offers. You may be offered to take you to the "official border", or help you cross the border cheaper, or even on the Thai side it is exorbitant to issue a bus ticket, etc. In fact, crossing the borders is free, you can easily buy a bus ticket on the Cambodian side. We ignore such personalities and just go to the big gate, everything is clear intuitively. First, the Thai border is passed. Along with your passport, you must have a completed departure sheet with you, which is usually obtained when entering Thailand. Then we get into the neutral zone. In front of the Cambodian arch "Welcome to Cambodia" on the right is the official visa department and the border post, where a visa is issued for $ 20 (+100 baht - the "official" bribe). In the event that you do not have a photo for documents with you, you will need to pay $ 25. One single sheet is filled out, surrendered with money and a passport through the window to the border guards. In a few minutes the visa is ready. Next comes the Cambodian border formalities. You may have to queue for 30-40 minutes at Arrival, but sometimes it's a very pleasant experience if there are globetrotters like you around. A stamp is put in the passport, fingerprints are taken and you are in Cambodia. The border is open from 7 am to 8 pm.

Thai border.

In the neutral zone.

Advice: do not trust locals who are trying to help spend your money; take a photo for documents with you; do not hide far a pen for filling out papers; take care of the availability of American currency; don't spend all baht in thailand.

Step 3 Poipet → Siem Reap

Once on the Cambodian side, you will immediately get to the stop of the free transit shuttle, which will take you to bus station(about 10 minutes drive). Siem Reap is 150 kilometers from Poipet. You have three main options: buy a bus ticket ($9, 3 hours), ride a minibus in a group ($10, 2 and a half hours), or take a taxi ($48). While I was standing in line at the border, I got into conversation with several travelers and we already decided to take a minibus. As a result, we assembled an excellent team of 10 people and went to Siem Reap. The road is excellent, the campaign is fun - it was very cool. Upon arrival, you will not be taken to the very center, but will be dropped off at specially designated places, where tuk-tuks are already waiting. They will try to offer affordable accommodation, but I recommend that you take care of these things before the trip and book everything. Then just tell the tuk-tuk driver the address or name of the hotel, he will take you to the center for 1-2 dollars.

Advice: It is advisable to have a navigator in your smartphone or off-line maps with you in order to roughly imagine where you are during the trip. Personally, I always additionally print out a map where the hotel is located.

Plot #2: Siem Reap - Phnom Penh

If "Plan A" (train) was chosen in the first step of the first section, then most likely you will still have a few hours for an easy walk in the center of Siem Reap on the day of arrival. If the bus was chosen as transport, then you will not have much time before evening. You can spend one or two days in Siem Reap, after which you can go further to Phnom Penh. The distance to the capital of Cambodia is 250 km (by water) and 340 km (by land).

Plan A: on water. A passenger speedboat departs from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh daily at 6:30 am. Travel time is about 6.5 hours, estimated arrival time is 13:00. The fare is $35. A ticket for this type of transport can be bought at the hotel reception.

Plan b: by bus. Daily at different time before lunch, regular buses depart from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. There are several transport companies involved in passenger traffic between cities. I have traveled and recommend Mekong Express Limousine Bus. I left at 9:00, paid a fare of $ 12, which includes transfer from the hotel (30-50 minutes before departure), a bottle of water and snacks on the bus. Travel time is 6 hours with a lunch break. All information on time, companies and prices can be obtained from the concierge at the hotel. In Phnom Penh, the tuk-tuk story is repeating itself. You will be taken to the hotel for 1-3 dollars.

Plot #3: Phnom Penh - Ho Chi Minh City (Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, Saigon, Viet. Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh)

You can spend one or two days in Phnom Penh, after which you can go further to Vietnam. Buses depart daily from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City. The process is the same: in the hotel you can get all the information, buy a ticket (10-13 dollars). There is a shuttle bus that will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the bus. There is no separate organized bus station in Phnom Penh. On the spot, they will write out the data from your passport and check the availability of a Vietnamese visa, which must be taken care of before traveling. Again, I recommend using the services of Mekong Express. Everything is well organized and there were no problems when crossing the Vietnamese border. Travel time with a break for lunch and the passage of all border formalities: 6 hours. In Ho Chi Minh City, the bus arrives in the very center, stops on Phạm Ngũ Lão Street.

Itinerary by day(not including days in Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City):

Day 1: Transfer Bangkok - Siem Reap (first night in Siem Reap)
Day 2: Siem Reap (second night in Siem Reap)
Day 3: Transfer Siem Reap - Phnom Penh (first night in Phnom Penh)
Day 4: Phnom Penh (second night in Phnom Penh)
Day 5: Transfer Phnom Penh - Ho Chi Minh City

Travel and plan your own trips - it's easy and much more fun than standard boring tours. Good luck and bright impressions! In the next parts I will start showing the cities themselves. See you!

March 2015 Yuri Berkuta

Cambodia, Phnom Penh - chaos)))) All prices in dollars, in cafes, restaurants, taxis, markets, etc. A huge amount of dirt, beggars and very poor people. The poor children are delighted with the ice cream they bought. A very depressing impression - luxury and terrible poverty.

The prices for fruits and seafood on the market are exorbitant, if in Thailand there is a price and it is for everyone, then in Cambodia they call an absurd price for farangs and when you leave, they don’t even try to stop you and bargain, in the hope that another farang will come and buy.

There are supermarkets with normal prices for fruits and stuff, it's called Pensil - I recommend buying everything there.

At the entrance, they filled out a bunch of papers - a declaration, an immigration card, information about the state of health. Important - when making online visas, print in 2 copies. approval, as they may or may not require it on their way back.

Applying for a visa at Seam Reap Airport

Issued a visa on arrival to Cambodia at Seam Reap airport. Despite the fact that about 30 people like me got off the plane (they flew in from Kuala Lumpur), the whole procedure took no more than 20 minutes. At the airport at the counter we were met by 10 employees border service. After filling out all the documents, go to one of them, give the documents and 20 US dollars, a photo (if not, they will take a picture of you) and after 10 minutes you are already in Cambodia in the status of a tourist. Domodedovo would have such a service.

Results:
It is better to come to the embassy by 10 am, before the necessary Cambodian, as a rule, did not appear at work.
Scans of questionnaires posted on the Internet are not suitable, I had to fill them out again in English.
I needed 2 photos, not 3.
Despite the fact that the visa itself will have a figure of $ 20, they took 700 rubles from me. They heated up a little, did not argue, because the money was paid in advance))).
Attention! They make a visa for 3 days - this is the usual period. For accelerated consideration, there will certainly be other money.
And also take 1 photocopy of the passport, it turns out you need it. If they don’t have it on hand, they can do it right at the embassy for 10 rubles, but they are not very willing to do this.

Apart from myself, I have not seen any tourists wishing to get a visa at all.

Z.Y. Upon arrival in Kambo, I will compare the process of obtaining and the cost of a visa in Moscow with the same procedure upon arrival at Phnom Penh airport (since not everyone who came with me to Kambo managed to get visas in Moscow). I think the comparison will not be in favor of the Moscow embassy.

How to get to Cambodia

March 2007 Alexander

Buy a ticket "Turkmenistan Airlines" to Ashgabat, there is a transfer to Bangkok. At the airport transfer is no more than 3-4 hours. From Kyiv to Bangkok and back ticket - 480 US dollars! In Bangkok, go to the Mochit Maai bus station and take the bus to Aranyaprathet - $ 7. This is the border with Cambodia, it takes about 4 hours to drive. A visa is opened in 30 minutes right at the border, and you find yourself in the Las Vegas of southeast Asia - the city of Poipet, a casino city. From there, an hour drive to Siem Reap and 5 hours to the capital. You can stay at any hotel for about $ 8 per day, in Siem Reap it will be more expensive. Good luck!

There is an airport for domestic flights. Unfortunately, this airport is temporarily closed.

Border crossings by land/sea are becoming more and more popular among independent travelers. Firstly, it is cheaper than flights, and secondly, you have the opportunity to see the country “without censorship”. When making a choice, be guided by two main criteria: the budget and the number of days of your vacation. It is an undeniable fact that passport control and customs will take you longer if you cross the border by land.

BORDERS

Thailand and Vietnam are the most convenient and most popular border crossing points with Cambodia. This is mainly due to the fact that between Russia and Thailand/Vietnam, there is an agreement on visa-free entry for up to 30 days.

This walk will allow you not only to get acquainted with the way of existence local residents and enjoy culinary delights in a cafe, but it will also allow you to understand what prices other sellers have for this route and will give you the opportunity to navigate and find out where the local port is.

water border Laos - Cambodia.

House Kralor - Ven Ham is the name of the border point.

opening hours: from 7:00 to 17:00.

Making your route from Laos to Cambodia along the river is not a bad idea in general. Quite rightly, the life of the river inhabitants is very interesting and very different from the rest of the population. However, it is worth noting that for this route you will have to overpay a lot. Traveling on water is far from a budgetary pleasure. And in the case of crossing the Cambodia-Laos border, it especially hits the pocket.

Important: this route is only possible during the rainy season or immediately after it ends. It is also important to note that cases of robbery were observed on this border.

LAND ROUTES

Not so long ago it was believed that it was not safe to cross the border with Cambodia by land, but this opinion has long since sunk into oblivion. Checkpoints are now open at the borders with Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, and crossing the border is not a difficult or dangerous undertaking. However, it is important to note the fact that despite the abundance of border points on the borders of these states, some of them may be closed to foreigners. For the latest and more accurate information, we recommend that you check out this resource.

The most common mode of transport for road travel is the bus. Of course, you can go any of the following routes and any other ground transport: taxi, motorcycle, bicycle, etc. However, we will focus on the description of travel by bus, because. in general, the procedures for some and for others will be the same.

As a rule, it is not very clean and not very good places, and besides with inflated prices for accommodation. The presence of such a fact is not a cause for concern. From the place to which the bus will take you to the hotel or guest house of your choice, tuk-tuk drivers will deliver you without any problems.

Knock knock - local vehicle, which is a motorcycle or moped and a sidecar attached to it

You can easily purchase bus tickets to all of the above destinations in Poipet. However, we strongly recommend that you provide yourself with tickets in Bangkok so as not to become a victim of scammers.

Important: The company that sells you tickets for the destination Bangkok – Siem Reap, should offer you assistance when crossing the border. There is usually a $10 surcharge for this service. For those who do not feel very confident or are visiting Cambodia for the first time, we strongly recommend using the help. Employees of the company are obliged to assist you directly at the border point, indicate the direction of movement and coordinate the actions of your group. Try not to lose sight of them. You will immediately feel the flavor of Cambodia and the resonance in comparison with Thailand. On the territory of Thailand you will be taken on a comfortable, double-decker bus with air conditioning and a toilet. Roads in Thailand are in excellent condition. However, as soon as you enter the land of Cambodia, the world around you will turn upside down. You will spend the road to Siem Reap in a completely different bus. And the road itself still leaves much to be desired…especially during the rainy season. But if you decide to go to Cambodia and get a lot of impressions, then this road is exactly what you need!

Vietnam - Cambodia

Bavet – Moc Bai.

Unfortunately, this route is not very picturesque and bright. The road runs mostly on flat terrain. But, despite this fact, this transition is very convenient, because. the road from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, including all procedures for passport and visa control and customs, will take you about 5-6 hours.

To follow this route, you need:

1. Buy a ticket from Moscow to Ho Chi Minh City.

2. In Ho Chi Minh City, buy a bus ticket on the route Ho Chi Minh City – Phnom Penh. You can order the most inexpensive tickets in the Pham Ngu Lao area. The average price ranges from $ 9 to $ 12 and it depends on the services provided (escort at the border, consultations with an English-speaking guide, availability drinking water etc.) and the quality of the bus.

Choose the bus departure time from Ho Chi Minh City - the earlier the better. This will allow you to arrive in Phnom Penh before dark, which will make it easier for you to move around the city in search of a temporary location. Of course, you can book a hotel or guest house in advance.

OTHER BORDER POINTS:

Let's talk about other points briefly.

There are rumors about the imminent opening of another point on the Cambodia-Vietnam border. It will connect the Cambodian coastal cities of Kep, or Kampot, with Phu Kok Island in Vietnam, which means that independent travelers will have the opportunity to discover truly divine views of the islands of both states.

Not so long ago, the point Prek Chak [Cambodia] - Xa Xia [Vietnam] was opened. When traveling from Kep or Kampot to Vietnam, this point is the best option. This route is not only convenient, but also very interesting. combines the picturesque coast of Cambodia and beautiful views Phu Kok islands. Due to the fact that this point has recently opened, there is still a risk that there may be overlaps with regular transport. That is why we advise you to use the services of a motorcycle taxi, the cost of which will be: from Kampong Trech $ 3, Kep $ 6 or Kampot $ 9, directly to the border crossing point, and then, already in Vietnam, take a motorcycle taxi and get to the nearest town Ha Tien, which, like Sha Doc, is located in the Mekong Delta. The price for the whole road from the border to the city will be about $2.

Also, the relatively new point of O'Yadau [Cambodia] - Le Tan [Vietnam] connects the Cambodian province of Ratanakiri and the central highlands in Vietnam. The road can take you more than 5 hours and is quite tiring.

In the west of Cambodia, there are several points connecting, to put it mildly, little-known cities that are not even always marked on maps. These are Trapeng Plong [Cambodia] - Xa Mat [Vietnam] and Trapeng Sre [Cambodia] - Loc Ninh [Vietnam].

Xa Mat will likely be convenient for those traveling from or to Ho Chi Minh City who want to discover Khao Dai Temple. Also, after the roads were restored on the territory of both states, this route will be popular among those who travel between Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap.

The border point between Banteay Chakrey [Cambodia] and Dong Thap [Vietnam] is far from the usual tourist routes. It is not popular with foreign tourists.

Transit air ticket - an air ticket for a transit flight. A transit flight, in turn, is a flight that involves a transfer at an intermediate airport.
