The Moscow Church of Elijah the Prophet in Cherkizovo was built in 1690. Previously, there was a wooden church on this site in 1370, which burned down.

Temple foundation

The history of the church is connected with the history of the village itself - Cherkizovo. It is known that it was built in the 14th century. The village was named after its owner - Tsarevich Serkiz, who after baptism became Ivan Serkizov. He came from the Golden Horde. However, Serkizov did not own his village for long, since he soon sold it to his fellow tribesman, Ilya Ozakov. History says that he was a very pious man. Out of respect for his heavenly patron, Elijah the Prophet, he ordered the construction of a temple. This is how the Iliinskaya Church was built in Cherkizovo.

It was located on the banks of the Sosenka River, in a very picturesque place. The Sosenka River is a right tributary of Khapilovka; its source is located in the Golyanov region. Its length is 9 kilometers. Nowadays, the main part of the channel is enclosed in a pipe. Only thanks to the bank on which the church stands, people remember where the river once flowed on the surface. Now it flows in a collector along the eastern shore of the reservoir.

Wooden church. Stone Temple

The stone church in Cherkizovo was built on the site of a wooden church, when Metropolitan Alexy still had his country home here. Until 1764, the village was the property of the Moscow metropolitans, after some time the church became a parish.

In 1883, chapels and a refectory were added to it, and in 1899, a hipped bell tower with three tiers. The decoration included iconostases from the 19th century, and the fence of a small cemetery - also from that time. On it is the grave of Ivan Yakovlevich Koreysha, a famous Moscow seer, local holy fool and saint (life: 1783-1861). At that time, the temple was not closed; there was a Sunday school for all residents of the village.

Cherkizovskaya Metropolitan and Patriarchal Dacha

Metropolitan Alexy, the minister of Moscow and all Rus', really liked the village, namely: his picturesque location, surrounding open spaces, proximity to Moscow. In 1360, he decided to acquire the village not only for himself, but also for his successors in rank. From that moment, Cherkizovo became one of the main estates of the Moscow Cathedral Chudov Monastery, an abbey with a large and spacious courtyard, as well as a well-developed monastic economy.

For Metropolitan Alexy, the Church of Elijah the Prophet became a place of rest and solitude. In it, he could calmly look back on his life’s journey, restore his strength, which would be useful to him in the future, or simply see people close to him. When the Metropolitan of All Rus' died, Cherkizovo was still for a long time remained the summer bedchamber of Moscow metropolitans.

When the Patriarchate was restored, the Moscow Metropolitan, Kolomna Saint and Wonderworker Tikhon became the Patriarch of All Rus'. He began to call the dacha Patriarcha.

Throughout the history of its existence, the temple courtyard was rebuilt many times. Associated with its history is the saint and metropolitan Innocent, on whose orders another reconstruction was made in the middle of the 19th century.

IN Soviet time Most of the churches in Moscow were completely destroyed, but survived. During the Great Patriotic War, all the believers of the temple were able to collect one million rubles for the construction of aircraft and sent them to Stalin. He sent a telegram of gratitude in response. Why airplanes? The fact is that the Prophet Elijah is a defender of aviation.

In the middle of the 20th century, icons from all neighboring churches that were to be destroyed were brought to the Church of Elijah the Prophet in Cherkizovo. At that time, the rector of the church was Archpriest Pavel Ivanovich Tsvetkov.

Elias Churches in Moscow

The Prophet Elijah is considered one of the most respected saints of the Old Testament. Three churches in Moscow are dedicated to him: the church on Vorontsovo Field, the church of Elijah the Prophet in Cherkizovo, and in each of them there are many holy relics, various objects that Christians venerate, as well as icons.

A few words about Cherkizovsky cemetery

Likewise, like the Church of Elijah the Prophet in Cherkizovo, the cemetery has its own ancient history. It is oldest place burials. It got its name from the village near which it was founded. There is a cemetery not far from the church. More precisely, it surrounds her. The cemetery is a very ancient historical necropolis. It was not destroyed during Soviet times. Since 1998, they began to maintain an archive in which the registration of all burials, even related ones, is indicated. On the territory there is a place for renting agricultural equipment for caring for graves. Cherkizovskoye Cemetery is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00 (from May to September) and from 9:00 to 17:00 (from October to April). Funeral rites are performed from 9:00 to 17:00 daily.

At the bend of the Klyazma River on a hill stands the youngest, until recently, church in our area - the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God. Built at the beginning of the last century, the temple amazes with its grandeur and beauty of architecture and is one of the richest monuments of church architecture of the 20th century. The village of Cherkizovo in itself is enough ancient settlement, the patrimony of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, will soon celebrate its 500th anniversary, and previously there was a wooden Church of the Intercession here, which at the beginning of the 17th century was moved to the neighboring village of Zvyagino (more about this here). Then, instead of a temple, a chapel was erected - at the end of what is now Main Street. Now there is no trace of those wooden buildings. Subsequently, by decision of the meeting local residents, and the current Church of the Intercession was built Holy Mother of God with chapels in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. Sergius of Radonezh. The initiators were the owners of the local weaving factory V.P. Novikov, his companions and wealthy Cherkizov summer residents (Shishelov, Bakhrushin, Kurlyukov, Zhuchkov, Selivanovsky, Kudryashov; probably also Masalov, Lyamin, Shkaubert, Medvedev, Gribov, Dikov...)

People who financed the construction of the temple

The temple was mainly built with their money. The owners of nearby factories - Sapozhnikov, Chelnokov, Voronin - helped. Donations for the construction and decoration of the church were collected in Cherkizovo, Tarasovka and other surrounding villages. Bricks for the construction of the church were transported on horseback from Mytishchi - from the brick factories of Voronin and Chelnokov. Cement for masonry was mixed using eggs. They were collected around the area by Lukerya Fedorovna Gruzdeva.

The temple was built in the Russian style of the second half of the 17th century. The temple and the bell tower, more than 50 meters high, form a single ensemble, the strict proportions of which create the impression of monumentality, although the church is not large in size. Capacity is about 500 people. According to reviews, the church has good acoustics; its sound is not inferior to the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Fyodor Chaliapin loved to sing in the church choir here. According to legend, the consecration of the temple took place in 1903 by the Hieromartyr Vladimir, at that time Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, canonized in 1994), (but, unfortunately, this is not confirmed by the archives). The Guest Invitation to the celebration of the consecration of the Temple on July 6, 1903, signed by merchants and patrons of the arts, has been preserved. The first rector of the Church of the Intercession, from 1903 to 1920, was Priest Yakov Petrovich Klyucharev. For the next twenty years, his son, priest Vladimir Yakovlevich Klyucharev, was the rector. In the mid-1930s, local authorities tried to close the church. At the enlarged plenum of the Cherkizovsky village council on February 28, 1934, such a decision was made. They wanted to use the church as a club. At the same time, the military threw down and cut into pieces the main bells of the belfry, cast from silver and copper, the main one of which weighed at least 400 pounds. From the church house that was specially built near the church for the family of the priest, the Klyucharyovs were first evicted into a gatehouse, and then they were asked to vacate it. A family of eight people was left completely homeless... But Cherkizovites stood up to defend the temple: they collected signatures from home and at the factory. The keys to the church never made it to the village council. And soon worship resumed.

At this time: before and after the war, priests often changed. According to information, many of the now glorified new martyrs served here, and an archival search is underway. For some time, the future archbishop and then priest Cyprian (Zernov) was the rector. But when Archpriest Nikolai Morozov (1888-1979) became rector, a certain calm settled down. He served in the Church of the Intercession for 15 years, and in 1953 a brick fence of the temple was built under him. In 1960-1970, the rector of the temple was Archpriest Seraphim Aleksandrovich Golubtsov. The famous priest Alexander Men concelebrated with him for several years. After Rev. S. Golubtsov was appointed rector of the Intercession Church by Archpriest. Vladimir Ilchuk, who served here for 8 years. Concelebrating with him was Rev. Petr Petrovich Andreev and others. Joseph Aristarkhov, who served here for about 30 years, died on November 29, 1999. Instead of Father Vladimir, Archpriest was appointed rector. Georgy Stroev, who served in the Church of the Intercession for 2 years. He was replaced by Archpriest. Nikolai Glebov and two years later was transferred to another parish. In the 1980s, Fr. was appointed rector. Pyotr Petrovich Andreev, who served in the temple for 12 years until his death on February 18, 1997.
