Forty nine years ago, a hijacking of an airplane took place in the Soviet Union. An-24, flying from Batumi to Sukhum, was captured by Lithuanian terrorists.

On October 15, 1970, the Soviet civilian aircraft An-24 flew from Batumi to Sukhum. The time in the way would take 30-35 minutes, but five minutes after the take-off, at 12:40 local time, two passengers in the first row caused a flight capacity and demanded to transfer the envelope to the pilots. It was printed in Vilnius "Order No. 9", in which the terrorists demanded to fly to Turkey and stop radio communication, for non-compliance with the order - death. At the same time, one of the terrorists declared passengers that there is no more Soviet power on their plane.

So the first seizure of the passenger aircraft began in the history of the USSR. On board were 46 passengers and five crew members.

The terrorists were Lithuanians, the Father and the Son of Brazinskas. Later, the competent authorities thoroughly learn all the stages of their lives. It turns out that Senior Brazinskas is a 45-year-old Pranas, an anti-communist, in 1944 he served in the auxiliary troops of the German division, where she collected pontoon bridges. Later, he supplied Lithuanian participants in the resistance of the weapon. In 1965, Pranas Brazinskas, working as the head of the warehouse of householders, received five years of the colony of the general regime for the embezzlement of socialist property, but it was conventionally relieved after three years, and in order not to tempt fate, he left with his son Algirdas to Uzbekistan.

But there, Pranas became the organizer of the local black market, the Son also participated in Father's Afrakh. When in 1970, the KGB became interested in Brazinskas, they decided to escape from the country, without inventing anything better, how to seize the plane.

However, these curious details of the biography of the invaders have not yet been known neither by the passengers of the board, nor the crew members.

After about an hour and a half after the seizure, the aircraft landed in this Turkish city. Local special forces, which was warned about the incident, hooked the plane. Coming out of the plane, Brazinskas-senior said: "Here it is, freedom!" - Both terrorists voluntarily folded the weapons and gave up the police.

All crew members had medical care. Passengers and pilots were offered to stay in Turkey, but none of them did not accept this offer. After a day, the Soviet military aircraft took them all back to the USSR, and the body of the dead flight attendant of Hope Kurchenko was delivered by a special flight to Sukhum.

In memory of hope

The feat of the nineteen-year-old Hope Kurchenko, the graduate of the Piene boarding school of the Glazovsky district in Udmurtia, the flight attendants of the Sukhumi Aviation Detachment, did not remain unnoticed. Twenty years after the tragic death in 1990, the dust Nadi Kurchenko at the insistence of her mother was transported to Udmurtia, the remains of the heroine are now resting at the cemetery of her hometown of Glazov. In the school of young pilots in the capital of the Republic of Izhevsk, the museum of its name was opened, which was given the title of "folk".

Life "Under the supervision of the KGB"

Turkish authorities, largely due to the influence of the United States, did not issue terrorists to the Soviet Union. They were convicted: Father to eight years in prison, son - to two. But in less than two years, both bandits were freedom and managed to move to the United States, where the Lithuanian diaspora overturned them to citizenship. In the West, it was believed that Brazinskas could not be put in one row with other terrorists, allegedly they fight against the Soviet regime.

In America, they changed the names and surnames on Frank and Albert Whites and settled in the town of Santa Monica in California. Life at both has improved. Brazinskas Sr. first worked as Malar, and then became a co-owner of a weapon store. His son graduated from accounting courses, settled to work in the insurance company and married an American.

However, until the end of the life, Brazinskas-senior did not give peace of the Communist. It seemed to him that the houses were followed by the KGB agents who want to fight him back to the USSR. In the 1980s, he got into a chronicle several times when he led to the police station "KGB agents" into the police station - some first oncoming from the street.

In America, Algirdas wrote a book of memories of his own with the father of the "exploits", in which he tried to justify the capture and hijacking of the aircraft "the struggle for the liberation of Lithuania from the Soviet occupation", and also talked about the horrors of life in the Soviet Union. But even after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the findings of Lithuania independence, Brazinskas were not returned to their homeland, still fearing the disguised agents of the KGB.

For old age, Brazinskas-senior became irritable, he often began to arise quarrels with her son. During one of these 45-year-old Algirdas scored her 77-year-old father of sports dumbbells. The court recognized him guilty and condemned for 16 years in prison.

Monument of Hope in Sukhum

In Sukhum in honor of Hope Kurchenko, a city park is named, in which a monument to brave stewardess was installed.

During the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia, the monument has suffered significantly, as it was subjected to constant shelling.

In 2010, the city administration allocated funds, the holes were shaked on the monument, but damage from strong shelling was affected when a tree fell on it - the monument fell apart in pieces.

In 2017, the monument will be restored and installed in the same place.
