Excursion route in Pavlovsky park. Walk in Pavlovsky Park, photos of attractions

Now the former palace estate Pavlovsk is administratively part of the Pushkin district of St. Petersburg. Now from the railway. Kupchino platform to Pavlovsk can be reached by train in 20 minutes. And once a trip to Tsarskoe Selo and even more so to Pavlovsk took up to two days from the Russian imperial court.
Pavlovsk is separated from the city of Pushkin by the Vitebsk railway.

In the 18th century, there were dense spruce forests in this area and there were two villages of the Ingermanland Finns Linna and Seppel. Under Catherine II, these lands were used mainly for hunting. In 1777, in gratitude for the birth of her first child, the future Emperor Alexander the Blessed, the empress grants vast hunting grounds in the valley of the Slavyanka River to the heir to the throne, Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, to create a country residence. This year is considered the year of foundation of Pavlovsk.

The Pavlovsk palace estate was subordinate to the Ministry of the Imperial Court. Already at the end of the 18th century, around the palace of the grand ducal couple with a huge (largest in Europe) landscape park, government and philistine buildings began to be built with mansions and country dachas of the capital aristocracy. Since 1784, the estate of Pavel Petrovich with the villages of Linna and Seppel became the village of Pavlovskoye, and in 1796, by decree of Emperor Paul I, the village of Pavlovskoye received the status of a city. And then this city was given to the ownership of Empress Maria Feodorovna. According to her will, Pavlovsk was inherited by one of her many sons - Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich. Further Pavlovsk was owned by: the grand dukes Konstantin Nikolaevich, Konstantin Konstantinovich and the prince of the imperial blood, John Konstantinovich.
The palace estate occupies the main part of Pavlovsk. And our walk will be devoted to little-known corners of this suburb of St. Petersburg - those that remain out of sight of most tourists. One of these now abandoned places is Aleksandrova Dacha - a neglected, overgrown park in the very south of Pavlovsk. For the first time, it is mentioned among the sights of Pavlovsk in the guidebook of I.G. Georgi as a manor with a pleasure garden in the English style of the Grand Duke and heir to the throne Alexander Pavlovich. The dacha consisted of several manor houses belonging to the Grand Duke and his tutors. The park had many pavilions, grottoes and arbors. The author of most of the pavilions is Ch. Cameron. Of the many buildings in Alexandrova's dacha, only one pavilion "Echo" has survived in a very poor state. It was dedicated to Flora and Pomona. The pavilion was an ancient Roman semicircular aedicule, where statues of Flora and Pomona stood in niches. The arched opening facing the pond was decorated with an Ionic colonnade. Now the pavilion is overgrown with bushes (in summer it is almost impossible to find it) and looks like this.

At the end of the 1820s, the site of the Grand Duke passed to General N.N. Annenkov. In 1870, the dacha was bought by the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich. The buildings have undergone major repairs, and the park has been redeveloped. At the end of the 19th century, the dacha, like other noble estates in the vicinity of the capital of the Russian Empire, experienced a dacha boom. The manor houses were re-planned for renting out premises, which completely changed their interior design. Well, three revolutions and two World Wars of the twentieth century completed the destruction of this remarkable palace and park ensemble.
Behind the neglected park of Aleksandrova Dacha there are stables for the horses that ride visitors to Pavlovsky Park. And next to them is the building of an abandoned boiler house with an 80-meter chimney. This is already a monument to the Soviet long-term construction. The construction was never completed. The pipe is interesting in this crumbling building. Rope jumping lovers sometimes come to her, offering to make a bungee jump from the upper balcony of the pipe for only 700 rubles. For those who bring three friends, the jump will be free.

Along A. Matrosov Street, we will proceed further south until it intersects with the Popovka River. From the bridge across it one can clearly see the cliffs made of Ordovician limestones and dictyonema shales. The height of the cliffs reaches 30 meters. In the thickness of the limestone, you can find fossilized representatives of the ancient marine fauna: trilobites, orthocerases and echinospherituses. This natural monument is described in the literature on geology as early as the 19th century.

Along the streets of A. Matrosov and Elizavetinskaya we will return to the Nikolaev gate. On the way to Elizavetinskaya street we will see A.P. Bryullov's dacha. The architect, on behalf of the Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, performed work on the planning project for this area for the construction of summer cottages. Here, in the Slavyanka valley, he was granted a large plot of land. Bryullov himself was engaged in the project of the country house in the form of a "Swiss chalet" and the layout of the park. The belvedere tower served as a viewing platform for the owner, who was building the Pulkovo Observatory at that time.

Not far from A. Bryullov's dacha is the Lansere dacha (now a residential building).

We continue our way towards Pavlovsky Park. In the Slavyanka valley we will see the picturesque Mariental park. Its compositional center is the Bip fortress (now a hotel and restaurant). Before the founding of Pavlovsk, the place at the confluence of the Slavyanka and Tyzva rivers was occupied by the ruins of Swedish earthworks (the name of the village of Linna located here is translated from Finnish as "fortress"). In 1778, in the middle of these fortifications, a small castle-shaped Marienthal palace was built. A drawbridge over the Slavyanka arm leads to the castle. Under Paul I, cannons stood on the ramparts of the former Swedish fortress. The park at the palace is decorated with many ponds and the Trellis staircase, built in 1793-1795 by the architect V. Brenna.

Through the Mariental Park you can go to Sadovaya Street. She goes around Pavlovsky Park. One of the oldest buildings in Pavlovsk is located at Sadovaya, 17 - the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene Equal to the Apostles. It was built in 1784 according to the project of Charles Cameron. The church was consecrated by the Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Novgorod. The ceremony was attended by a grand-ducal family who donated their wedding icons to the church - the Apostle Paul and St. Mary Magdalene. The church is one of the best examples of strict classicism in St. Petersburg.

On Sadovaya Street, near one of the entrances to Pavlovsky Park, there is the Nikolaevsky Gate. They formalize the entrance to the city from Tsarskoe Selo. The gate was built in 1826 according to the project of K. Rossi at the behest of Emperor Nicholas I for the birthday of his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna.

Zverinetskaya street departs from Sadovaya street. It is so named because during the time of Paul I and Alexander I there was a menagerie - a special area of the park with extensive enclosures for wild animals. Later, the area is built up with summer cottages. The dacha of the St. Petersburg architect K.K. Schmidt has been preserved on Zverinetskaya street. The Art Nouveau house with half-timbered elements was erected by the owner in 1902-1903.

Zverinetskaya Street will lead us to the Round Pond. The territory of the menagerie ended here.

In the area of the menagerie, private development still prevails. Along Lunacharskogo street we will reach the Red Kursant street. Here, at the intersection of these streets, stands S. Mandel's dacha, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Now it is gradually being destroyed.

We will reach Oborony Street along the Red Cadet Street. Right in front of us will be the beautiful Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. It was built in 1902 for the Pavlovsk garrison in the forms of Old Russian architecture by the architect A.I. von Gauguin.

Near the temple there are ruins of the Manege built in the middle of the 19th century.

Behind the Manege there is a local cemetery, and we will continue along Oborony Street. The complex of barracks of the Life Guards Consolidated Cossack Regiment and the 5th Horse Battery, built at the beginning of the 20th century, has been preserved on it. Among them, the building of the Officers' Assembly, built in 1914 in the neo-baroque style, attracts attention.

We will walk back along Oborony Street, past the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and Mariental Park and go to Hospitalnaya Street. Many old buildings have been preserved on the parallel street Konyushennaya. At number 8, the dacha of Count P.A. Bobrinsky, the brother of the main shareholder of the Tsarskoye Selo railway, Count A.A. Bobrinsky, has been preserved. There was a rich country estate with outbuildings and a garden.

We follow further to the park along Konyushennaya street. House of merchant Pytnikova at number 5 is typical for the inhabitants of Pavlovsk.

Konyushennaya Street got its name because of the Main Palace Stables located at its beginning, built in 1786-1792 according to the project of C. Cameron with participation in the design of the facades of V. Brenna.

We again went out onto Sadovaya Street to Pavlovsky Park. Let's move along its fence to the railway station. At number 9 on Sadovaya Street, the building of Villa Miranda has been preserved. The villa belonged to the chemical engineer I.B. Stein. The building was built in the Art Nouveau style, and the interior is decorated in the same style.

We will continue along Sadovaya Street, past the railway station and V. Putin's favorite restaurant, along the fence of Pavlovsky Park. This road will lead us to the village of Tyarlevo, territorially merged with Pavlovsk. Tyarlevo was a popular summer cottage. Tyarlev summer residents were: O. Forsh and V. Muravyov - in the future Saint Reverend Seraphim Vyritsky.
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior has been preserved, built in memory of the 300th anniversary of the Romanovs' house in 1913-1914 with private donations designed by one of the local summer residents - engineer A. Zakharov. In 1937, the temple was closed, the priest and other clergy were shot. Until 2003, there was a production and a warehouse here, then the church was restored and returned to the believers.

Let's go further along the fence of the park and turn to Novovestinskaya street. It houses the recently renovated Farm. It was founded by the Dowager Empress, the owner of Pavlovsk Maria Feodorovna. The Farm building was built in 1805 according to the project of A. Voronikhin. On the territory of the Farm, a poultry house, a barnyard was built, and a pond was dug. Previously, this place was part of Pavlovsky Park, and later turned out to be outside of it. In the time of Maria Feodorovna, walks of her guests in the park always ended with a visit to the Farm, where the hostess personally treated those who wished to the freshest milk and eggs. Breakfasts and afternoon snacks at the Farm were quite popular. The farm was managed by one of the German colonists of the Etup village in Pavlovsk. Together with his wife, he taught girls from the Orphanage, which was patronized by Maria Feodorovna, in the correct management of dairy farming: caring for livestock, milking and the production of dairy products. Surplus dairy products from the Farm were sold to local summer residents, and the calves were sold to wealthy peasants. All proceeds from such trade went to charities. Maria Feodorovna loved to spend time at the Farm. Here she studied reading and handicrafts. The Farm had a library, mainly of books on agriculture.

This concludes our walk around Pavlovsk. We saw not all, but the most interesting corners of this suburb of St. Petersburg.

I think I won't be mistaken if I say that Pavlovsky park can be called one of the most beautiful not only in Russia, but in the whole world. Here the regular and landscape parts, pavilions and sculptures, the picturesque Slavyanka river and numerous ponds, bridges and baths coexist harmoniously. It is impossible to inspect it in one day.

The history of the creation of Pavlovsky Park

It was presented by Empress Catherine II to her son, Tsarevich Pavel Petrovich and his wife Maria Fedorovna in 1777. And soon the construction of the summer residence of the Grand Duke and his wife began here, and after Paul's accession to the throne in 1796 Pavlovsk became the imperial residence.

During the life of Pavel, who preferred, Pavlovsk passed to Empress Maria Feodorovna. After her death in 1828, Pavlovsk was inherited by the Romanov family, and after the 1917 revolution it was transformed into a museum.

Great damage to Pavlovsk in general and Pavlovsky park and palace in particular was caused during the Great Patriotic War. After the victory, the Pavlovsk Museum-Reserve was restored thanks to the activities of the director Anna Ivanovna Zelenova.

The most famous architects of the 18th - early 19th centuries took part in the creation of Pavlovsky Park: C. Cameron, V. Brenna, A. Voronikhin, G. Quarenghi, J. Thomas de Thomon, C. Rossi ... On an area of about 600 hectares a grandiose palace was created -park ensemble.

Pavlovsky Park consists of nine landscape areas:

  • Red valley
  • Valley of ponds

C. Cameron, who supervised the construction of the park in 1780-1786, defined the layout of the main areas, laid the main roads. Under his leadership, the Pavlovsk Palace and many park pavilions were built. In 1796-1801, the construction was continued under the direction of the architect V. Brenna. In 1801-1828 the work was headed by P. Gonzago.

The mood now is squirrel

In fact, all guests of our city are taken on excursions to Peterhof, Yekaterinensky Park, Alexandrovsky Park and Pavlovsky Park. Pavlovsky Park is considered one of the best landscape parks not only in Russia, but also in Europe. It is located in a very beautiful place - in the valley of the Slavyanka River.

Unlike a park that has a regular layout, a landscape park involves only a small alteration of natural nature - there are no straight paths and clipped trees, and its outskirts may more resemble a forest. But if you look closely, you will notice that in ordinary nature, trees never grow as they do here - they are artificially planted in beautiful groups. You can talk about Pavlovsky Park for a very, very long time, and the hour of walking that guests of our city give to sightseeing is still so little =) Today I will show several favorite places in the park

Not far from the Cold Bath is the so-called Family grove, each tree of which was planted simultaneously with the appearance of a new member of the royal family. This tradition was started by Maria Feodorovna back in 1785. There were ten children in the family of Paul I and Maria Feodorovna, when they grew up and got married, trees were planted in honor of their chosen ones, and then the children that appeared. Thus, by the time of the death of Maria Feodorovna, there were 50 trees in the garden.

At the moment, the Grove consists of conifers and this is the most suitable place if you suddenly want solitude and silence. Yes, this is where the protein is fed;)

Temple of Friendship Is a structure resembling an antique temple, erected in the form of a rotunda with 16 columns. The building is located in a surprisingly beautiful place on the banks of the Slavyanka near the grove. The temple of friendship has an amazing property - from afar it looks small and airy, but from up close it seems monumental and solemn.

The building was created in 1784 at the initiative of Prince Pavel Petrovich and his wife Maria Feodorovna as a token of gratitude to Catherine II for the lands he had donated. The building was designed by Charles Cameron and it was his first construction in Pavlovsky Park.

Initially, the blank wall of the rotunda was painted white, but from the 19th century it acquired a yellow color. Light entered the building through a glass hole in the dome. Cameron, worried that the light would not be enough, ordered a special magnifying glass from England.

Above the entrance there is an inscription of gratitude addressed to the empress, and in the niche opposite the entrance there was a statue of the goddess of wisdom, Minevra, whose face resembled Catherine II. Inside the building there was carved furniture, the walls were decorated with stucco moldings.

The Temple of Friendship was the venue for chamber concerts for which a select audience gathered. In summer, sculptures from the museum's funds are often exhibited here.

Parade field - this is a part of Pavlovsky Park, starting at the end of Lipovaya Alley. Previously, military maneuvers and parades were held on this territory, hence its name.

The development of this area was carried out in two stages. In the early 1790s, under the leadership of Vincenzo Brenna, a parade ground was built here, where Paul I personally conducted parades and exercises of soldiers. During this period, the territory was expanded to the future Rosovopavilionnye ponds and surrounded by a cast-iron fence.

After the death of the emperor in 1801, Pavlovsk ceased to be a ceremonial royal residence, but remained the property of the royal family. In 1803-1813, Pietro Gonzago was involved in the development of this area.

And soon, instead of the once dusty parade ground, a magnificent landscape park appears - meadows with flowers, groups of trees on the shore of lakes and shrubs of various colors. The park is beautiful at any time of the year - in summer and spring there are many flowering plants, in winter, spruces and pines look great against the background of white snow, and autumn will delight you with a bright golden carpet.

Under the leadership of Gonzago, the Rose Pavilion ponds were built on the territory of the region (these are two ponds connected by a narrow strait, across which the Oleniy Bridge is thrown). In the middle of the pond, the Lieven island was reclaimed, named after Countess Charlotte Lieven, educator of princes and princesses in the house of Paul I. Far from the alleys, there is a modest monument in the form of a column with a metal end, also dedicated to this woman, who became a good angel of the Romanov family.

In the Paradnoye Pole area, not far from Lipovaya Alley, there is a mass grave where workers and soldiers who died during the revolution and civil war are buried.

Peel Tower - This is the most original building of Pavlovsky Park, built in the style of the then fashionable pastoral (rural) buildings. The idea of the building belongs to Pietro Ganzago, and the project was made by the architect Vincenzo Brenna. The name of the Pil-Tower comes from the word "saw", since this place used to be a sawmill, powered by the pressure of the water of the Slavyanka River.
The stone building, created in 1797, was two-storey, had a round shape with a cone-shaped roof covered with thatch. An internal staircase with railings made of birch trunks led to the second floor. Later Voronikhin replaced this staircase with an external stone one, and instead of a water mill he built a bridge with a beautiful arch and metal railings.
The outer walls were covered with murals depicting the once beautiful building in ruins. But only in appearance this building looked poor and wretched, inside it was a luxurious salon in which Maria Fedorovna loved to rest. This richly decorated room contained a marble fireplace and mahogany table, as well as three sofas with pillows embroidered with gold and silk threads. The salon was decorated with paintings and stucco moldings, vases and clocks.
On the first floor there was a utility room, in which, according to legend, the guilty and not fulfilling their duties served. The Pil-Tower is one of the most expressive buildings in Pavlovsk, reminiscent of a castle in miniature.

Artificial ruins were often used in the design of landscape parks, since, compared to the new building, the ruins fit very well into the green landscape without creating unnecessarily sharp contrasts. Many cascades have been built in Pavlovsky Park, one of them is Ruinous, created in 1794 by the architect Vincenzo Brenna.

This structure, built at the confluence of the Lower Starosilvia pond with Slavyanka, successfully connected two forest areas - Old and New Sylvia.

Vincenzo Brenna gave an elegant architectural design to each of the cascades built in the park.
The viewing platform of the building is decorated with dilapidated vases, pedestals with lions lying on them, made of tuff. The architect used the trunks of freshly cut birches as a fence. Fragments of antique figures and fragments of a column could be seen nearby.
The full-flowing Ruin Cascade can be seen only during the period of active snow melting.

The pavilion was built in 1782 by architect Charles Cameron and was originally intended for keeping livestock and storing milk, which is why it got its name - Milk.
In the middle of the 18th century, despite the dominance of the classical style in architecture, the fashion for pastoral, that is, the rural style (pastoralis in Latin means "shepherd") penetrates into Russia, in particular, it has become fashionable to use elements of rural life in the design of landscape parks.

Empress Maria Feodorovna wrote out a sketch for the construction of a farm from the province of Etup, located in modern France, and wished to see an exact copy of it in Pavlovsk. However, Charles Cameron did not simply copy the building and implemented several of his ideas. So, a bell was installed on the roof, calling the cows for milking, and in order to give the building a romance, he let a birch through the roof. The building is made in the form of a medieval building, built of dark stone and resembles a German farm or tavern.

Initially, one farm room housed cows, two more rooms were used to store milk, and the third was designed as a luxurious lounge, decorated with beautiful furniture and an elegant service. As a result, the contrast between the gentlemen's hall and the adjacent cattle house was too sharp. Therefore, in 1786, all animals were transferred to the built stockyard.

Throughout its history, the Dairy has burned several times and has not survived in its original form. Back in 1895, the roof was lost in a fire along with a hole for a birch. But the Nazis inflicted even greater damage to the building during the Great Patriotic War. Now there is a cafe.

For now =) next time I will show you a completely unusual estate with a very mystical history;)

Everything is fine. It was an unforgettable trip to Russia.

    Canal walk

We hasten to express our deep gratitude for the excellent excursion through the canals of St. Petersburg. We sailed on a boat "Venice". The boat is new and very comfortable. The excursion was led by the guide Vladimir, a historian by education, a man of truly encyclopedic knowledge. The presentation of the material is very interesting, not boring. For us, this guide and the whole excursion as a whole are the best in recent years, and we often use the services of guides

  • I invite you to enjoy the natural and architectural beauty, as well as the history of the Pavlovsk ensemble, which is called the most romantic and shady. And - the most poetic of the park ensembles of the suburbs of St. Petersburg.

    Duration

    It is possible with children

    How is it going

    Pavlovsk

The Pavlovsk ensemble took shape over fifty years - from the 1770s to the end of the 1820s - and subsequently did not undergo significant changes. This gave its artistic appearance an unusual harmony and integrity, which distinguishes Pavlovsk from all other suburban ensembles. The use of the terrain gives the park an indescribable beauty.

The uniqueness of Pavlovsk was created by several generations of architects, but all of its creators treated the work of their predecessors with a rare tact - not destroying, but only complementing what was created earlier.

The total length of alleys and paths in the park is comparable to the distance from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Pavlovsky Park is one of the largest in Russia, over 600 hectares (under the protection of UNESCO).

    “I see everything Pavlovsk hilly,
    Round meadow, lifeless water,
    The most languid and shady,
You will never forget him. " (Anna Akhmatova)

    Program

    • We meet at the entrance to the park, next to the palace. During our walk we will be able to enjoy the beauty of the Marientalsky Park, see the pavilion of the Three Graces in the Own Garden of Empress Maria Feodorovna, which they say - "They are more beautiful than beauty itself." This is the last piece in Pavlovsk Park, created by the architect Charles Cameron in 1800.
    • The second stop is at the Bip castle - one of the architectural whims of Emperor Paul, who was called "the last knight of the outgoing era", let's talk about his knightly romance.
    • And, of course, we will go through the most beautiful places Pavlovsky Park, beautiful in all seasons, we will see the place where the famous music station, the Apollo Colonnade, the Gonzago Gallery, the Pavlovsky Palace, the Slavyanka river valley, where picturesque plans replace each other, like scenery, were located. However, this is not surprising: the work here was carried out by the famous decorator Pietro Gonzago. We will have the opportunity to take a whole series of beautiful shots, as well as relax and have a snack right in the park. If you wish, you can take coffee and sandwiches with you, a small rug.

    Organizational details

The park is paid in summer from 10 to 18 hours. The ticket price (100 rubles) is paid separately.

Alla gave a very informative tour. At the same time, all our wishes were taken into account, answers were found to all our questions. Even the pace of the excursion adjusted to us. A very erudite person who knows history. Thanks to Alla, we recommend everyone her interesting excursion.

I liked everything and Pavlovsk, and the excursion, and the guide Alla. Had a great time, learned a lot, enjoyed the magnificent views, the atmosphere in the park is calm and peaceful. Thank you very much. We want to come there again.

Spent a great day in Pavlovsk with Alla. We ourselves have been many times, but on the excursion we saw many places for the first time) Very interesting and fascinating presentation of the material, Pavlovsk appears in a completely new way. We really enjoyed!

    Very beautiful park

In general, everything went well, not great, good. The route was drawn up competently, we learned a lot, even taking into account the fact that we have already been in the park more than once. Most likely, there was not enough improvisation or easy communication, it was more like a standard excursion, I wanted a little different. Therefore, a solid 4!

    We really enjoyed.

Our best excursion of 4 with different guides in St. Petersburg! Alla tells very engagingly, answers questions in detail, demonstrating a deep knowledge of history, emphasizes the difference between proven facts and legends and opinions. We listened as if spellbound. We felt the whole atmosphere of the place.

On June 23, 2018, with a group of friends, we took a walk through Pavlovsky Parks with Alla Plotnikova. An unforgettable experience. The route is very well thought out, so more than 3 hours flew by in one breath. The pace of the movement is unhurried, stops in the most "species" places, if possible, you could sit. We saw almost all the main sights of the Marientalsky and Pavlovsky parks from the Pig-iron to the Theater gate. There was enough information, it is well structured and tied to the place, subtly complements the perception of marvelous views. I recommend it to everyone. Alla is very sensitive to the audience, closely monitors the state and mood of the group, it seemed to me that she can rebuild on the go, so that both the route and the story correspond to the level, interests, age and physical condition of the participants as much as possible. I take this opportunity to convey from everyone: many thanks to Alla! We are thinking of walking somewhere else with you in the future.

    Thank you Alla!
We got great pleasure from the tour of Pavlovsky Park!
A very beautiful park, nature, and at the same time a lot of new interesting information.
The route is well thought out, there are stops for rest, so everything went smoothly and
we are not tired at all. Alla is just great!
I will recommend it to my friends.

Thanks to the guide Alla, we really liked the excursion. We were on an excursion, me, two young people 20 years old and a child 4 years old. Everyone liked it. Without the guides, we would not have reached those parts of the park that we saw. We managed to feed the squirrels and titmice. The child was delighted with this. Thank you, Alla! Use the services of the company again.
