Belgium. Extraordinary Ghent

Welcome to the ancient city with an amazing history - Ghent. The city is located in Belgium, at the confluence of the Leie River with the Scheldt. Ghent is the provincial capital Ost Fladeren.

The date of Ghent's origin is not exactly known, but there is evidence that already in the 7th century this city was a large settlement. There is a version that Ghent has existed since the time of the ancient Roman Empire, and its name is translated from Latin as "pier""ganta".

Between 1000 and 1550, the city of Ghent was second in size only to Paris.

This is a truly interesting city that has preserved many architectural heritage and is famous for its beauty.

Ghent is called "city of flowers" because its territory is surrounded by flower fields.

Traveling to Ghent is best suited for a cozy family vacation.

Climate and weather

The city has a temperate maritime climate. The weather here is humid, with frequent rains. Winters are warm and summers are almost never hot.

In winter, the average temperature is +3 °C, in summer - +18°C. The spring-summer season is the best time to visit Ghent.

Nature

This beautiful old city is located at the confluence of the river Scheldt And Leie. The location makes Ghent's nature and landscapes interesting and unique in its kind.

I have to confess "immersed in greenery"— this is not about Ghent. The view of the city from above reveals a fabulous picture in the form of graceful tiled roofs and sharp turrets - there are very few green spaces here, except for flowers. Love for flowers is a distinctive feature of the local population. The streets are filled with colorful fragrant flower beds. And on holidays, the city is transformed: flower parades and flower fairs fill it with bright colors and amazing aromas.

Attractions

The main attractions of Ghent are located in the historic city center. This part is closed to vehicles, you can only walk on it.

The symbol of the independence of the city and its prosperity is Belfry- Bell tower. Its height is 91 meters, and it was built in 1338. At one time, it served not only as a bell tower - the state treasury was kept here.

Fans of painting and architecture of the Middle Ages should definitely visit Cathedral of Saint Bavo. The cathedral has a surviving crypt, and the halls of the cathedral are decorated with paintings and ancient frescoes.

Another religious attraction Ghent altarpiece. It is a true work of art.

Separately, it is worth highlighting Museum of Fine Arts, which opened in 1798. Now there are about thirty rooms in it, where works by Dyck, Bosch and other world-famous painters are kept.

The building of the monastery of the XIII century housed Archaeological Museum. It contains a unique collection of weapons, national costumes and interior items. There are special lectures for children.

Nutrition

Culinary connoisseurs say that the cuisine of Ghent is very similar to French. Most dishes are prepared from seafood, there is a huge selection of vegetable salads and spirits. For vegetarians, Ghent is a real gastronomic paradise. In any institution, you will be offered dishes from Brussels sprouts prepared in the most unusual ways.

Beer fans should definitely try the local malt drink. It's not even about the beer itself (although it is very tasty here and the choice is rich). There is an interesting tradition in Ghent: beer is drunk here from unusual flasks with wooden stands. This method was invented by Pavel Kvak, who lived in the 13th century. Since many travelers, passing by the Kwak tavern, said that they did not even have time for a glass of beer, the innkeeper came up with a special glass, from which you can drink even in a moving carriage.

The unusual invention of Pavel Kwak is not the only gastronomic feature of Ghent. This city is also famous for its bacon. They started trading in the Middle Ages. Pork hams are a specialty of many restaurants. In addition, the Flemish carbonate deserves attention.

Ghent cheese flavored with cumin has an unusual taste. It is customary to serve a thick liquor to be eaten with a spoon.

Mushrooms are widely used in Ghent cuisine. Be sure to try the champignon soup at lunchtime.

In the Keizershof restaurant you can taste national dishes. The restaurant hall is decorated with old paintings and unusual wooden furniture. The outdoor terrace is open during warm weather.

One of the most prestigious establishments is Auberge de Fonteyne. It will serve you not only classic national dishes, but also author's seafood dishes.

Rare wines can be tasted in the restaurant Brasserie Pakhuis housed in a beautiful historic building.

Accommodation

There are about 49 hotels in Ghent. Room in a two-star hotel Ibis Ghent Centrum Opera will cost you from 62 to 120 €. The hotel provides rooms equipped with satellite TV, buffet, non-stop bar.

Wi-Fi is available in public areas. Among the three-star hotels, the most prestigious are Castelnou And Best Western. Accommodation in them will cost you from 74 € to 150 €. Comfortable four-star hotels NH Gent Belfort, Sandton Reylof and Vacation Inn Gent Expo will offer you rooms from 72 € to 375 €.

Entertainment and recreation

Ghent is characterized by calmness and harmony. Holidays here are perfect for couples enjoying their honeymoon and families with experience. A boat trip along the canals will be pleasant and romantic. Most of the interesting buildings are located along the canals Korenlei And Grasley, therefore, such a walk is also a great opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the city, as if from the outside. Previously, there were shopping arcades in these areas, and the age of some of the local buildings is more than 800 years.

There are few clubs in the city, most of them are open only on weekends.

Popular club Decadence, it always plays the most progressive music. In the evenings, there are exciting dance performances, and the bar always has a large selection of drinks.

Jazz lovers must visit the club Damberd Jazzcafe which was opened in 1978. Since then, the club has been a favorite place for jazzmen and their fans.

An evening walk along the promenade will be pleasant. Korenlei, along which there are many old, exquisite mansions.

During the summer, Ghent hosts many festivals. A separate national holiday was dedicated to flowers here. "Flower Show" takes place every five years. If you happen to be near Ghent, don't miss this sight. Incredible experiences are guaranteed.

Purchases

Most shopping centers and shops are located along the streets Veldstraat, Wolderstraat And Koutere. In them at attractive prices you can buy any product.

The shopping center is very popular Groot Vleeshuis located in a 15th century building. You can shop and see the sights at the same time.

Transport

Ghent can be reached by direct train from Brussels in 35 minutes. Not far from Ghent are major highways.

Public transport is represented by buses and trams. One trolleybus route has been laid. Taxi rides are common.

There is a single tariff system for all modes of transport. You can buy a ticket at the machine at the bus stop, at specialized kiosks, from the driver or at the newsstand. The cost of a ticket for one trip is 1.2 €, 2 € - when purchased from the driver. The ticket is valid for 60 minutes.

Connection

In the city of Ghent, all types of communication are represented - mobile and city telephone network, Internet. To access the Internet, you can use the services of Internet cafes, just keep in mind that there are not so many of them in the city and they can work according to a very peculiar schedule. Wi-Fi is available in hotels and public places.

Safety

Be aware of the safety rules in public places. Do not carry documents and large sums of money with you unnecessarily.

The crime rate in this city cannot be called high, but elementary vigilance will definitely not be superfluous.

If you are going to regularly use public transport, it is better to buy a special ticket for travel. These tickets are sold at specialized kiosks. Lijnwinkel. They are located near the Korenmarkt square and the Central station.

Do not worry about tickets for boat trips: they are always sold at the piers. You don't need to buy them in advance.

As a rule, tips are included in the total bill, but you can always leave an additional tip of 5% of the amount.

When you communicate with the local population, in no case do not criticize politics and the royal family.

Since the indigenous people are very sensitive to their culture, be careful in statements about the way of life of the Belgians and never compare the life and culture of the local population with French traditions.

There are towns in Europe that have preserved a living spirit of history in the narrow corridors of their ancient streets. In the case of Ghent, this seems to me a real miracle. The city is beautiful and majestic: none of its streets feel deserted. No cobwebs or cracks, just a slight noble touch of antiquity. The houses, streets, churches and castles of Ghent seem to have been transported from the Middle Ages to the present by magic.

Despite the fact that Ghent is one of the main cities in Belgium, tourists do not come here very often. Cities such as, or have gained great popularity among them. But if they are multinational, colorful, constantly developing cities, but look like a retouched tourist postcard, then Ghent is distinguished by the incredibly authenticity of its architecture. This is a very real Belgian city, which is worth coming to see the true face of Belgium.

I did not live in Ghent, but I traveled here often while studying and working in the EU capital. Each time Ghent seemed to me like a hidden gem of Belgium. Everyone who came to visit me in a foreign land, I certainly brought it here.

How to get there

Getting to Ghent is not difficult. No wonder it was chosen as the administrative center of the European Union. This small country has a favorable geographical position and a developed transport system. So Ghent, like other Belgian cities, can be reached by train, plane or car.

By plane

Airport Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven

Your trip to Ghent will most likely start from the main Belgian airport Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven which is located 66 km. from Ghent. This is the nearest airport.

You can read more about how to get from the Russian Federation by plane to Brussels.

You can compare ticket prices.

How to get from Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven to Ghent

From Brussels Airport, Ghent can be reached either by train or by car. If you chose the first option, go down to the lowest floor of the airport, buy a ticket at the box office and take either a direct train to Ghent (it takes about an hour, direction La Panne), or a train to Bruxelles-Midi, where you can transfer on a faster train through Ghent. In this case, you can keep within 40 minutes.

At night, I advise you to avoid transfers at the Bruxelles-Nord station. This is the most criminal station in Brussels. One not so good day I was robbed there. As a result, I was forced to return home without a passport and wallet. And although the Belgian police found almost all of my things (except for the chocolates that I was carrying as a gift), it took several months.

The drive from Brussels to Ghent will also take about an hour. You will need to exit onto the E40 highway, which will lead you actually straight into the city.

Airport Brussels South Charleroi Airport

A number of domestic European air carriers, as well as low-cost airlines such as Ryanair or Wizzair, fly not to Brussels Airport, but to Brussels South Charleroi Airport. Don't be deceived: the word Brussels is in the name of the airport only as a bait. In fact, Charleroi Airport is quite far from the main Belgian city. It also takes longer to get to Ghent from here than from Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven (111 km).

How to get from Brussels South Charleroi Airport to Ghent

To get from the second most important Belgian airport to Ghent, you will first need to take bus A, which will take you to the city's main station in 20 minutes. There you can transfer to the Brussels train (direction: Anvers). In Brussels, in turn, change to a direct train to Ghent. You will have to spend about 2 hours on the way.

By train

How to get by train from Brussels to Ghent, we already know. You can get to Brussels by rail with or without transfers from almost any major city in the EU.

From Moscow

Theoretically, you can get to Ghent by train directly from Moscow. To do this, you will need to take the Strizh, which provides rail links between Moscow and Berlin. In Berlin, you will need to change to a regional train to Cologne. From Cologne the same way you can get to Brussels. Well, then you already know everything.

The total travel time will be about 30 hours, 20 of which you will spend on the site -. Ticket prices for Swift range from 169.5 to 667.5 EUR, depending on the class. The cost of travel on European railways will be another 150-170 EUR.

By bus

From European cities

You can get to Ghent by bus from a number of European cities with the help of the budget company Flixbus. Here is an approximate list of destinations with minimum prices:

The company also provides trips between Ghent and the French Paris and Lille, as well as Amsterdam. All Flixbus buses arrive in the Gent-Dampoort train station area. It is approximately 1.5 km. from the city center. You can either overcome them on foot or take tram number 3, 7, 18, 38, 39.

From Moscow

If you are so brave and desperate that you are ready to travel to Ghent by bus directly from Moscow, there is an option for you! A bus departs twice a week from the capital's Schelkovo railway station Ecolines. In less than 2 days, it will take you to the main station of Brussels (Bruxelles Centrale). Tickets can be purchased online at the Ecolines website. An important point: on the way you will have to change the bus once. The transfer is carried out in Warsaw. You will need a bus from Riga to ( Riga-Paris).

At the Brussels station, take the train to Ghent.

The total cost of such a trip: approximately 160 EUR. You will have to spend about 45 hours on the road.

By car

Getting to Belgium by car is no more difficult than getting to other Western European countries.

From Moscow

The distance from Moscow to Ghent is 2,562 km.

To overcome them, in addition to a reliable iron horse, you need international car insurance (green card), as well as ingenuity and readiness for unexpected situations on the road. When you travel such long distances, anything can happen. However, I will give you some advice:

  • Save change for toll roads.
  • Think in advance where you will spend the night.
  • Do not load the machine with unnecessary things and attachments (otherwise it will lose its maneuverability).
  • Before choosing which border crossing to go to, look on the Internet where the line is shorter (this can be done on the website of the Belarusian customs).
  • Mentally prepare for broken roads in Belarus.
  • Calculate how much the trip will cost you. Most likely, you will burn gasoline for 300-400 EUR. Spend a couple of hundred more on overnight stays.

From Saint Petersburg

The distance from St. Petersburg to Ghent is 2,480 km. They are also easy to overcome by car. For this it will be necessary to pass through Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany.

When is the season. When is the best time to go

Western Europe is good because there is almost always a “season”. Tourists come to Belgium absolutely at any time of the year. So Ghent can be a good destination for Christmas, May holidays, holidays or just any of your free weekends. You choose!

Ghent in summer

Visiting Ghent in the summer is a great idea. Firstly, because of the grandiose Ghent festivals that take place in July. Secondly, in the summer the weather in the city is excellent for walking and exploring ancient structures. The average temperature during these months is +17 degrees. There are quite a lot of tourists during this period, but there are few students who go on vacation to their homes.

I really love Ghent in the summer. Chilly Belgian weather leaves tourists and locals with few sunny days a year. Therefore, in the summer everyone tries to work up a year ahead, and the atmosphere of relaxation and carelessness reigns in the city.

Ghent in autumn

Ghent in autumn not only does not lose its majestic medieval beauty, but also becomes even more picturesque. However, the autumn trip to Ghent has its drawbacks: the eternal damp weather and the eternally noisy students. Average temperature: +11 degrees.

Ghent in spring

Ghent blooms in spring, and the revived beauty of nature is in perfect harmony with neat medieval houses. Average spring temperature in Ghent: +10 degrees. However, I advise you to dress warmly: in the spring months in Ghent, you can still feel the cold wind from the sea. There are not many tourists at this time.

Ghent in winter

Finding something to do in Ghent in winter is just as easy as it is in summer. The weather is certainly chilly, but mulled wine bought at the Christmas market will help you get through it. The average temperature in the city during the winter months is +4 degrees. Sometimes it can snow a little.

In winter, I advise you to take winter clothes on your trip: it always seemed to me that during the winter months the weather in Belgium is colder than the average in Moscow. All because of the high humidity. In any case, in December-January, I always wrapped myself in warm scarves and did not forget about gloves and a hat.

Districts. Where is the best place to live

Administratively, Ghent is divided into 14 districts. All of them are safe, but not all of them are interesting from a tourist point of view.

As you can see on the map below, most of the hotels are located in the city center - in the Gent area. Here you will find hostels, hotels, and apartments (although the number of the latter is not very high). Most tourists do not stick out further than this area of \u200b\u200bthe nose and even believe that the city of Ghent is limited to the Ghent region. It is understandable: all the main attractions are located in the city center.

A number of hotels and apartments for rent can be found in areas adjacent to the center Gentbrugge, Sint Denijs Western And Zwijnaarde. Housing here is on average lower. However, the difference is not large enough to be taken into account.

What are the prices for holidays

Holiday prices in Ghent are not cheap. Lunch at an inexpensive restaurant will cost you about 15 EUR per person. A room in a three-/four-star hotel will cost around 100 EUR. A taxi ride around the city will cost approximately 20 EUR.

You can save on entrance tickets to various tourist places. For this you need to purchase City Card Gent. It gives you free admission to the main museums in Ghent, free public transport, one ride on a pleasure boat and the chance to rent a bike for a day. It costs 30 EUR for two days and 35 EUR for three days. The card can be purchased at the city's tourist office at Sint-Veerleplein 5.

Main attractions. What to see

I would say that the main attraction of the city of Ghent is its entire center. It is necessary to walk slowly along it, examining the architectural details and looking for evidence of past centuries. Well, to be more specific: Ghent is famous for its sacred buildings. So do not apply to go to the main churches and temples of the city, even if you are not too religious.

Top 3

Belfort van Gent (Watchtower)

The 95-meter watchtower of the 14th century was and is a symbol of the city. I advise you to take the elevator to the very top to see the huge bells and a beautiful view of the city.

Attention: the elevator can only be overcome part of the way. For the most desperate, there is the option to walk the whole way. Actually, the first time I did, but then I felt a little unwell from the claustrophobia that had played out and the fear of falling down the shabby narrow steps.

Entrance costs 6 EUR for adults, 2 EUR for persons from 19 to 26 years old, 4.50 EUR for pensioners. For those under the age of 19, admission is free. The tower is located on the Emile Braunplein and is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00.

By the way, inside the tower you will find a completely unique and ancient mechanism that looks like a barrel organ. It is he who controls the ringing of the bells.

Het Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts of Flanders)

Built by Philip of Alsace, Count of Flanders, after his return from the crusade in 1180. Therefore, in its architecture, the castle resembles similar buildings in the Holy Land. The thickness of the walls is 2 meters! There is a torture chamber inside. From the top there is a wonderful view of the city.

Entrance costs 8 EUR for adults, 6 EUR for groups, as well as pensioners and youth from 19 to 26 years old. Entrance for persons under 19: free. Open from April to September every day from 9:00 to 18:00, from October to March every day from 9:00 to 17:00. Closed January 1, December 31, December 24-25.

Graslei and Korenlei (Graslei and Korenlei)

Many people think that Graslei and Korenlei are the most beautiful embankments in Europe. These people can be understood. Neat toy houses, turrets, the glare of the sun on the water, boats passing by and colorful umbrellas of cafes create a unique atmosphere here.

Beaches. Which is better

There are no beaches in Ghent. However, sea lovers can rush from Ghent to (61 km) or Knokke(49 km) - the famous Belgian resort towns. The water temperature in these places rarely rises above 20 degrees Celsius, but the wide beaches, soft sand and refreshing sea breeze will certainly lift your spirits.

To get from Ghent to Brussels, use a car or train. By car, take the same highway E40. You will be in Brussels in about 50 minutes. By train you will reach in 36 minutes. You need a direct IC fast train to Brussels. One adult ticket costs 9.20 EUR.

Antwerp (59 km)

Probably the second most important city in Belgium, Ghent is also very close. This is the capital of diamonds and just a very picturesque medieval city with a castle and ancient buildings in the unique Brabant Gothic style. I came to Antwerp when I wanted to go to the zoo. Here is one of the oldest zoos in Europe.

By car, you will reach here in approximately 1 hour on the E34. The train ride will take about the same amount. From Ghent main station, take a direct train to Antwerp. The ticket will cost 10 EUR.

Food. What to try

There are many places in Ghent where you can taste Flemish cuisine, which is considered one of the finest in Europe. The main dishes are mussels in various sauces, fried ribs and " stoverij" (pieces of tender meat stewed for three hours in dark Belgian beer). All this is invariably accompanied by Belgian fried potatoes.

Another famous Ghent dish is the Ghent waterzoo ( Gentse waterzooi). It is a fish and vegetable soup. Sometimes it is also prepared with chicken.

Budget

  • Faja Lobi on Vlaanderenstraat 2 is the only Surinamese restaurant in Belgium. For those who don't know, Suriname is a small African country that formerly took the place of the Netherlands Guiana. The menu includes both African and Flemish dishes. In general, and original, and tasty and inexpensive!
  • Groot Vleeshuis- a very inexpensive place where you can taste Flemish cuisine for less than 10 EUR.
  • On sleepstraat many cheap eateries with Turkish, Indian and Pakistani cuisine. The food here is of decent quality.

Expensive

  • Jan Van den Bon on Koning Leopold II laan 43.
  • c-jean at Cataloniastraat 3.

Holidays

  • Gentse feesten - A 10-day festival that takes place in the second half of July. The history of the festival goes back 170 years! Today it is one of the largest European festivals and is home to some smaller ones (for example, MYouth Circus Festival). The Ghent Festival includes free performances by musical groups, various entertainments for children and adults, theatrical performances, rides, fireworks and much more. Among all the festivals that I have seen in my lifetime, this one is the most grandiose and interesting.

Safety. What to watch out for

Ghent is a safe city, but quite touristy. This means that a large number of tourists attract petty thieves and beggars. You should beware of them, as in any other large city.

In case of problems, contact the local police. The central site is located at Belfortstraat 4.

If you are using a bicycle, be sure to lock it securely. In Belgium, as in the Netherlands, bicycle theft is one of the most common crimes.

Things to do

Finding something to do in Ghent is easy. I'll give you a few options:

Shopping and shops

The first thing I advise shopping lovers to visit is local markets ( Vrijdagmarkt), which have been established in the city center since the 13th century.

Today, the markets turn around from 7:30 to 13:00 on Fridays, as well as on Saturdays (from 11:00 to 18:00), and even on Sundays (from 11:00 to 18:00). Here you can try fresh vegetables and fruits, cheeses, ham and even ready meals.

The flea market operates on the square near the Cathedral of St. Jacob also on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Most of the shops and retail chains are located in Ghent on the street Weldstrat.

Bars. Where to go

Bars in Ghent can be found on St. Veerleplein, around the church of St. James, and in the student district of Blandijnberg. Excellent Belgian beer will be waiting for you everywhere. Most of the drinking establishments are open until late.

Here are a few places worthy of your attention:

  • baravins- a wine bar with an excellent menu. Located at Steendam 53. Open every day until midnight. Prices are moderate.
  • Dull Griet- a traditional Belgian pub with a huge view of beer drinks and a truly intoxicating atmosphere. Address: Vrijdagmarkt 50. Open every day from 12:00 to 01:00.
  • Bar des Amis at Vlasmarkt 5 is intended for long friendly gatherings. Open every day from 18:00 to 05:00.
  • Trappistenhuis at Brabantdam 164. A very small but very cozy bar. On weekdays it is open until 01:00, on weekends - until 02:00.

Clubs and nightlife

  • I must admit right away that I am not a great specialist in nightclubs and I have not visited them much in Belgium. But I know that the most popular club in Ghent is the club Decadence at Overpoortstraat 76. Often the best DJs of the world scene play here.
  • Live music, namely jazz, you can listen to on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 21.00 at Hot Club De Gand at 15b Groentenmarkt.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

From Ghent, I advise you to bring food, because here the culinary traditions have been kept here for centuries! Here is a short list of local delicacies: pralines, local beer, meat and sausage products, Tierenteyn Ghent mustard, Mastelles buns. You can buy all this in numerous small shops in the city:

  • I advise you to buy traditional Ghent sweets in a shop Confiserie Temmerman at Kraanlei 79.
  • You are looking for trinkets, magnets, lace and other amenities in the store Craenkindershuys on Kraanlei 2.
  • Buy traditional Ghent mustard Tierenteyn only in the company store at Groentenmarkt 3. It has been made here since 1790.

The price for all this is very reasonable. Of the souvenirs, only handmade lace can be expensive, the cost of which can reach several hundred euros for a small item.

How to move around the city

The center of Ghent is small enough to be easily explored on foot. I always did this - I moved around the city on my own two feet.

A bike might be a good option. There are many bicycle parking lots in the city. Streets with one-way traffic are most often two-way streets for cyclists (a special sign will notify you about this). The only negative: paving stones in the center. This means you can shake in the saddle. A couple of times I experienced it myself: the sensations are not the most pleasant.

For those who like to go faster, there are Vespa scooters. They can be rented in the city at the company at Beukenlaan 65. Prices start from 25 EUR per day.

However, Ghent has an excellent transport system. Public transport usually runs on schedule. A ticket for one trip on a bus or tram costs 3 EUR from the driver and 1.40 EUR from the machine. Ticket vending machines can usually be found at bus stops. Tickets are valid for one hour on any route.

If you are going to spend more than one weekend in the city, I advise you to buy a ticket for 10 trips. It costs 14 EUR and is valid for trips not only in Ghent, but also in other Flemish cities.

Important: if there is a machine at the stop, you need to buy a ticket in it. The bus or tram driver may not sell you a ticket directly, indicating the presence of a machine. You can also pay for the trip using SMS. Instructions, again, are at the stops. True, for this you will need a Belgian SIM card.

All public transport in Ghent is operated by the Flemish company De Lijn. There is a company office at the Sint-Peters railway station where you can get a free map of the city and the surrounding area, where all bus and tram routes will be marked.

Taxi. What features exist

Taxi ranks in Ghent are located on the square in front of the Gent-Sint-Pieters station, as well as at other strategically important points in the city: Gent-Dampoort, Korenmarkt, Woodrow Wilsonplein (Zuid), Flanders Expo. Naturally, you can also call a taxi by phone, using the services of one of the many companies in the city (V-Tax, Taxi Discount Gent, Taxi Gent).

You can often pay for the trip with a card or in cash. But just in case, it's always worth having some cash ready. Payment is by meter. The average cost of a trip around the city is 20 EUR.

Another important point: don't expect all taxis in Ghent to be yellow. The color can be anything, but the characteristic Taxi inscription on the roof is still usually present.

Trams

Ghent trams, like buses, are operated by De Lijn. And this is the most popular, fastest and most convenient way to move around the city.

In total, there are four routes in Ghent: No. 1, 4, 21, 22 and 24. At the same time, routes 21 and 22 are almost identical. It is especially convenient that each route has its own color: you can easily find the route you need on the city map.

An important point: there are no turnstiles in Ghent trams. Therefore, each passenger must validate his ticket in the validator.

Buses

Buses in Ghent are less popular than trams. However, the bus network of Ghent can save you at night, because there are as many as 8 night routes in the city (N1, N2, N3, N4, N5, N17, N70, N76).

At 11:30, 0:15 and 1:00, all night buses, except for the N1, pass through the Gent Zuid stop.

Transport rental

If you decide to rent a car, I advise you to do it right at the Brussels airport. Or in advance on the Internet. A car for one day will cost you about 70 EUR. The longer the rental period, the lower the cost per day. See prices and options.

If, nevertheless, the desire to get behind the wheel seizes you on the streets of Ghent, you can do it at the offices of Sixt, Europcar, Herzt, Luxauto and others.

You will find a complete list of providers.

The price for 95th gasoline at the moment in Belgium is about 1.35 EUR per liter.

The city center of Ghent is a pedestrian zone, but at the entrances to it you will find many convenient underground parking lots.

Ghent - holidays with children

I would not call Ghent the best city for families with children. But you can still find some entertainment for children here. Not far from the city, at Gijzelstraat 14, 9031 Drongen you will find a real farm. It is called Schoolhoeve De Campagne. Here your kids can interact with animals, feed and clean them, and even ride a farm tractor. Open from 9:00 to 16:30 on weekdays.

An important point: if you come to Ghent with a toddler who already walks, but not very much, you can borrow a stroller for free! Contact

Buggypunt Gent to Emile Braunplein or call +32-92428040. The rental point is open every day from 08:00 to 18:00 (on weekends from 10:00 to 18:00). You will be asked to leave some document as collateral.

I continue to talk about my autumn trip to Belgium. After Brussels we went to Ghent.

I wouldn't have known about this city if one friend hadn't said that you should definitely go there. Still, our tastes for cities coincide by 200%. Most tourists go straight from Brussels to Bruges. In vain, my friends, very in vain! A stop in Ghent is a must.

He is different. Not as pretentious as, and not as touristy as Bruges. Some more natural. Of the Belgian cities, I liked Ghent the most.

We went to Belgium by car, but you can also see the main cities by train. As an option, buy a ticket for the Brussels-Bruges train (it costs 15-16€, no need to buy in advance). After 30 minutes, get off at the bus stop in Ghent. After walking around Ghent, again come to the station and use the same ticket to go further to Bruges.

Ghent has one of the largest universities in Belgium, so the streets are filled with students. People relax on the parapet:

In Ghent, in the Sint-Bavo Cathedral, there is an observation deck with gorgeous views of the city center. I recommend!

City of Ghent attractions

Ghent has an interesting history. In the 13th century it was the second largest city in Europe after Paris. Ghent was also very rich, because wool was produced and traded there.

To call him poor and in our time the language will not turn. A fresh-looking building, well-groomed streets, neat flowers.

So it breathes with well-being and well-being. Photo of Ghent:

Belford Belford, Ghent Belgium

Belford Bell Tower (Belfry and Cloth Hall (Belfort en Lakenhalle), also known as a 14th-century watch tower. My favorite attraction. Worth a visit because of the breathtaking panoramas from the observation deck.

You can climb to the top of the tower by elevator, which is very convenient, given the number of steps and the width of the stairways. This building was once a symbol of Ghent's independence. Benches are placed around the bell tower, you can bask in the sun. Previously, this dragon flaunted at the peak of the bell tower, now he lives on the 2nd floor and allows himself to be photographed. That's right, there is nothing for the animal to freeze on the street.

St. Michael's Bridge, Ghent, Belgium

One of the most beautiful bridges in Ghent and a great place for a panoramic photo

After watching the film "Lie Down in Bruges", I, like many others, dreamed of seeing this Medieval city with my own eyes. And how glad I am that we decided to stop by Ghent on the way from Brussels to Bruges. It turned out to be so amazing that it is beyond words. A majestic castle in the very heart of the city, narrow streets, canals along which small boats float. Ghent is not as touristy as Bruges, so it is possible to enjoy the city without the crowds of tourists.
