If you decide to go by car from Moscow, then it seems to me that the most optimal and interesting route is - - - - Munich - Passau -. The entire path will be almost 3 thousand kilometers.

When is the season? When is the best time to go?

Undoubtedly the most magical time to travel to Europe is the Christmas period. Passau is no exception, there are also many cute streets with gingerbread and colorful houses, there are Christmas markets selling hot mulled wine and delicious hot dogs. But in the autumn-winter period, terrible winds blow in the city, so be sure to take a scarf and a hat with you.

In the spring and summer, the city blossoms and turns green. In such weather, it is definitely better to walk and watch the confluence of three rivers from the bridges. In addition, at this time, you can get poisoned for thermal procedures in the spa towns that are located in the neighborhood - Bad Griesbach, Bad Steben and others. Rumor has it that Gorbachev loves to heal here. I don’t know, personally I haven’t met him :).

The price for the vacation itself does not change much depending on the season, the only thing that really gets more expensive during vacation periods is a plane ticket. And, probably, you are aware that Russian artists often perform outside their homeland. So in Passau, concerts of popular singers, musicians, actors are also held. Often tickets for their performances are cheaper than in Russia. Therefore, if you suddenly dreamed all your life to get to the concert of Stas Mikhailov, but hesitated to say about it at home, allow yourself to relax in Germany :).

Passau in summer

During the summer months Passau has very pleasant weather. The warmest months are July and August (about + 23-25 \u200b\u200bdegrees). But at the same time, heavy torrential rains can occur here, due to which three famous rivers periodically overflow their banks. There was a powerful flood in 2013, experts said that it was the largest in Germany in the last 500 years.

In early June, a European music festival is held here and the program usually includes an event that is unique in its essence - organ nights. After all, Passau has the largest organ in the world!

Passau in autumn

September is a great time to travel to Passau because it will be incredibly beautiful. Just imagine - the main river of Europe, colored facades of small houses, green trees, in which yellow and orange shades of autumn are already appearing. The first month of autumn is the warmest, the thermometer often shows + 18-20 degrees during the day, it gets colder outside in November and October.

All Bavarian holidays are celebrated in Passau, so in September and October you can take part in the harvest festivals, German Reunification Day. And at the end of October, huge pumpkins with candles inside appear everywhere, so the townspeople prepare for All Saints Day.

Passau in spring

Starting in April, it usually becomes warm in Passau, and on some days it is even hot. In May, most often the temperature is kept near + 17-19 degrees. In addition, March and April are also considered windy months, and when surrounded by water, the feeling of cold increases markedly. Therefore, do not forget about warm clothes. In the last spring month, there is a lot of rainfall, which leads to flooding in June.

Passau in winter

Winter in Germany is always Christmas first. Believe me, nowhere else will you see such a fairy tale (but only in Vienna!). Therefore, if you have time, try to go around as many Christmas markets and markets in Germany as possible.

They are also available in Passau. The largest is located on the main square, not far from the train station (8 minutes walk). Even if you are not very lucky with the weather, you will always be lucky with hot and warming mulled wine. And the New Year is also a time of sales. Passau is a simple city, there are no designer shops, but in ordinary shopping centers you can update your wardrobe or buy something useful with real discounts from 50% to 80%.

Districts. Where is the best place to live?

Passau is a small town and not the most touristy, as I said above. And there is no clear division into regions. Almost all hotels are located in the historical part of the city. I myself would single out 2 districts - the Old Town and the University district. There are also a couple of hotels that are located towards the University, but at a considerable distance from the center.

  1. Old city.Almost all hostels and hotels are located in old houses and this gives them a special chic and atmosphere. This area is in close proximity to the bus and train station. From here you can walk to all the main attractions of Passau. The price per night in local hostels and hotels, taking into account promotional offers, starts from 35 EUR.
  2. University area. We can say that the railway station and bus stations are part of this area. Therefore, excellent transport accessibility is provided. Also from here you can walk to the historic center. The cost of a room in a hostel here starts from 26 EUR.

You need to choose a place to stay only in a checked place, for example, on.

You can see the prices for apartments, and compare the cost of rooms in hotels by.

What are the prices for holidays?

On average, prices in Passau are slightly lower than in the same Munich or Berlin. For example, a dinner for two with beer will cost 15-18 EUR, coffee at the train station costs from 1.2 EUR. By the way, the Bavarians do not understand the type of American coffee, for them the American is a cookie. Therefore, if you want a simple coffee with a minimum amount of milk, then ask for coffee or espresso.

The rental price starts from 50 EUR, but the best options may cost a little more. In any case, I advise you to keep track of promotions and special offers on, because this way there is a chance to book accommodation at a cheaper price.

The prices for groceries in stores across Germany are about the same. For example:

  • 1 kg of turkey fillet costs about 7 EUR,
  • bread from 1.5 EUR,
  • pretzel from 1 EUR,
  • pasta from 39 cents,
  • milk from 1 EUR,
  • beer from 50 cents,
  • wine from 1.5 EUR,
  • cheese from 2 EUR.

Opposite the Passau bus station, there is a Norma supermarket on the ground floor of a small shopping center. There is a completely optimal selection of products, there are delicious fresh buns. And in the building of the railway station there is a Yarma’s shop - here you can buy a delicious sandwich (it will cost about 1.5-2 EUR) and take away coffee (from 1.2 EUR).

I have long wanted to say that there are a lot of lactose-free products in Germany. Therefore, if you are lactose intolerant, then heaven is simple for you.

Public toilets also cost 50 cents, even in malls. Which makes me very upset every time :).

Major attractions. What to see

In our Bavarian Amsterdam, I advise you to definitely visit the place from which you can see the confluence of three rivers, walk across the bridges and take great pictures from there, walk through the historical part, go to a couple of cathedrals. And then be sure to warm yourself up with mulled wine or have a glass of beer in the bar.

True, in water areas a strong, even squally wind rises, and to make it comfortable to walk, it is better to "pack" properly. At a minimum, you should always have a large scarf or stole with you.

Top 5

Veste oberhaus

This is one of the oldest European castles in Europe, in 200 years it will be a thousand years old!

In total, the complex accommodates about 65 thousand square meters. And if you climb the highest palace tower, you will get the best view of the confluence of three rivers. Well, an excellent panoramic view of the city will also be provided.

St. Stephen's Cathedral

The cathedral became famous for the fact that under its arches is the largest church organ in the world!

You can get to part of the service to listen to it in action (well, if this does not contradict your religious statements).

Old town hall

The former city government building is located in a very picturesque place on the banks of the Danube.

Now the building itself houses a museum, in which most of the exhibits are devoted to the history of the city.

Glass museum

Here are collected all kinds of crystal and glass objects, the history of which dates back to the 17th century!

Many of the exhibits used to serve as utensils in royal houses, by the way.

Artist's alley

The most creative and at the same time the most "terrifying" place in Passau.

Street of Artists, another name for the lane "street of hell". And all because the street is in the lowest place in Passau, and it is regularly drowned. There are even special marks on the walls. In general, there are many souvenir shops here, so if it doesn't flood, then take a look here.

Beaches. Which is better

There are no beaches in Passau, but there is an excellent water park - Erlebnisbad PEB. There are several pools (indoor, outdoor), salt water pools, there are thermal baths. You can easily freshen up and lose a few calories from drunk beer. A visit to the pools costs 6 EUR per person, while the thermal baths and a sauna - 15 EUR.

Churches and temples. Which are worth visiting

Baroque, baroque and again baroque. If you love Baroque as much as the ancient people of Passau, then you should definitely put the local churches on your itinerary. Even if the exterior of the temples can be attributed to the Gothic style, the interior decoration is 100% Baroque. Since Passau was at one time the capital of the diocese of the Holy Roman Empire, there are large and majestic cathedrals, and there are small churches. About the most important - St. Stephen's Cathedral I wrote above, I will not repeat myself. I'd better tell you about three more wonderful temples.

Museums. Which are worth visiting

There are not many museums in Passau. But these three, I recommend you to visit:

Tourist streets

Walking along the streets of Passau is certainly beautiful, but you will surely be making a promenade through the old town anyway.

But do you remember that Passau is in one bottle ?! Therefore, I advise you to better walk over the bridges. Mary's Bridge stretches over the Inn River. Therefore, sometimes you can hear that it is called "Mariainnbrücke" or "Innbrücke". It was built in the 12th century (later it was reconstructed). It used to include the itinerary for kings traveling to from Frankfurt.

Now cars are driving across the bridge itself, but a closed sidewalk and observation platforms have been made for pedestrians. You can walk across the bridge from the old city to the new city with modern entertainment.

What to see in 1 day

If you stopped in Passau on the road for only 1 day, then I advise you to pay maximum attention to the old city and its main attractions. I recommend this route for maximum immersion in the medieval atmosphere:

  • 10:00 - 11:00 - walk through the old town away from the bus station;
  • 11:00 - 12:00 - inspection of the Cathedral of St. Stephen;
  • 12:10 - 12:30 - visit to the church of St. Paul;
  • 12:30 - 13:30 - Have lunch at Café Simon at 10 Rindermarkt, right next to St. Paul's Cathedral;
  • 14:00 - 15:00 - go on an excursion to Veste Oberhaus, inspect the oldest castle and see the famous confluence of three rivers from a height;
  • 15:30 - 16:30 - I recommend returning to the city and stops, and on the way to look into the museum of the diocese treasures;
  • 16:30 - 18:00 - After a busy day, you can have a delicious dinner and a glass of beer at the Bouillabaisse Fishchrestaurant.

If you arrive by public transport from another city, then you may have to go back before 18:00 to get there. Then it is better to shorten the time for lunch or dinner in order to have time to inspect as many objects as possible.

What to see in the vicinity

Bad Griesbach im Rottal (25 km from Passau)

You can get there by bus from the bus station for 6 EUR. If you really want to plunge into the atmosphere of chic and European luxury, then go to this resort town.

One of the largest golf courses is built here, there is an excellent pool with a slide, which is 80 meters high! But the main reason why people come here are thermal springs, which come from a half-meter depth and have a temperature of 30 to 60 degrees. There are many different clinics that treat the now common burnout syndrome.

Grafenau (42 km from Passau)

You can get there by bus from the bus station for 7.5 EUR. This city is the seat of the Bavarian forest. The road here runs along small mountain serpentines. If you go in the spring or summer, you will enjoy the magnificent view of the green meadows.

In Grafenau itself is the Bavarian National Park - a huge green area with an artificial lake, river, bridges and fantastic fields. There are free wooden loungers on which you can sit, gaze at the river, listen to birdsong and meditate. Not already burnout clinics :).

Food. What to try

Passau is a true Bavarian city in terms of food. Therefore, the signature dishes are unchanged here - beer, sausages, knodels, pork and pretzels. If you haven’t had time to try them before, then do it in Passau. Take cash with you just in case, as many establishments may not accept cards, even though they usually accept cards. I know of cases when apparently decent people refused to serve on the card, because the waiters thought they had no money. Gratuities are often written into the check immediately, usually 15-20% of the check amount.

Markets are also organized in Passau 3 times a week, where you can buy natural products. Meat, poultry and eggs are especially praised. On Tuesday and Friday, the market opens at 7 am at Klostergarten, and on Saturday at the square in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral.

  • If you, like me, occasionally get tired of heavy German food, then you must love this place - the restaurant Bouillabaisse Fishchrestaurant... It is located at Rosengasse, 1. As you might guess from the name, fish is excellent here and there are many Mediterranean dishes on the menu.

  • The second place I recommend to go, of course, is not entirely correct in terms of a healthy lifestyle, but it is very atmospheric. This is a cocktail bar and a hookah bar Uferlos-Passau (Gottfried-Schaafferstrasse, 12). You don't need to smoke a smoky steam cocktail, but you can look at the modern inhabitants of Passau, chat with young people, play checkers and chess, watch a match. Only locals usually gather here, so the place is very colorful.

Holidays

Christmas

The most important and spectacular holiday. In the old town of Passau, not far from the cathedral, a Christmas market begins in November. Here, as well as in a bunch of shops open, where they sell delicious aromatic mulled wine, buns, soups, hearty hot dogs. All streets are decorated with Christmas trees and decorations, and luminous figures. But after Christmas most of the stalls will be closed, so try to get here before Catholic Christmas.

Folklore festival

A vibrant and dynamic event takes place in Passau on the last weekend of April. These days, a carnival procession of local residents takes place along the streets, who dress up as peasants and sing songs. Many come with whole families, some even come on old carts for greater naturalness. Participants start their way from St. Stephen's Cathedral and go to the Old Town Hall. A frenzied energy emanates from these people, it's great to look at them and how they enjoy life. And after the procession, the Bavarians with all their hearts continue the celebration in the beer shops.

Organ Music Night

It would be a sin if in the city, where the largest church organ is located, there were no spectacles with his participation. Therefore, every year in June or July (dates change), within the framework of the European Music Festival in St. Stephen's Cathedral, musicians delight guests with the sound of an organ.

Danube cruise ships, starting their route from Germany, leave from a small Bavarian town - Passau. Passau stands at the confluence of three rivers - the Danube itself, Inna and Iltsa. “Aurelia” was waiting for our group there. But you had to get to Passau first.

The morning of the second day of the trip met us at Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof).

While walking around the station waiting for the train, I noticed a fundamental differenceHauptbahnhof from our, for example, Kurskiy ye ... schA (oh!) analog construction. Clean, comfortable, spacious, does not smell like homeless people and shawarma. Smoking is prohibited at the station, and therefore the rail and sleepers are not covered with an additional protective layer of gobies. In general, the station is pleasant in all respects.

Ran along the tracks to see the technique " Deutsche Bahn ".

For reference: Deutsche Bahn (DB ) - the main railway carrier in Germany, which is like our "P \\ D ". Engaged in passenger and cargo transportation.

And the trains themselves.

Double decker.

For the whole group, the question remained open: why do the Germans call our "Sapsans" "Aisami"? (ICE - InterCity Express).

Against the background of all this brilliant railway beauty, our suburban train to Passau looked somehow nondescript or something ...

True, it turned out that the carriages are quite comfortable, and such an electric train runs very quickly. After 2 hours we arrived at the Passau station.

Passau is a small town. According to Wikipedia, it has only 50,000 inhabitants, of which 10,000 are students of the only large university in Lower Bavaria. There is a lot of interesting things here, for example, the world's largest organ is located in St. Stephen's Cathedral, and concerts of organ music are held daily. Alas, the time in Passau was a little more than half an hour, so there is a reason to return and inspect everything in more detail.

Almost the entire Danube embankment within the city is an impromptu river station.

Danube motor ships leave from here.

City views.

Amazing old cobbled narrow streets.

The lower castle is best seen from the ship, after leaving Passau. It stands on the spit of the Danube and the Ilz River.

One last look at Passau and the city hides behind a bend in the river.

Well, then, on the first evening, there were sluices ( Jochenstein - already on the border with Austria)…

... the first Danube towns along the banks ...

... first impressions of the amazing views of a new river in my geography ...

... the feeling that the cruise has begun. Well, and under the finale, evening in the modeall - inclusive with excellent draft "Holsten".

Shl. By the way, after departure from Passau, we saw the same "Ukraine" - the ship on which our cruise was supposed to go. This is a river boat built in Austria in 1979. I don’t know whether it’s good or bad that the cruise didn’t take place on board this ship, but I am more inclined to joy. But we met and photographed all four "Austrians" of the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company. I'll tell you about these ships later ...

My first visit to Germany began in the small town of Passau. In this article, I share my impressions of the city and what attractions there are in Passau.

How it took me to look at the sights of Passau

Passau is a small town in Germany on the border with Austria. Why is it interesting and why do tourists come here at all? I'll tell you now!

You can get to Passau from Austria, for example, by buying a quite cheap train ticket for 19€ , or from Linz, Wels.

So, on April 28th at exactly 19:18, as promised, my train from Vienna pulled up to the Passau Hbf station, where a friend from the couchsurfing site met me. I will not dwell on what it is and what it is eaten with, perhaps I will talk about it in a separate article.

I will only say that I did not particularly prepare for this city and did not study in detail what sights there are in Passau.

The weather was lousy, but after checking in, we still went for a little walk. I would like to note that the city clearly does not imply evening walks in the dark. There are few lanterns on the streets and the whole city seemed to me dark enough, even in the center. Perhaps this impression was enhanced by the rain.

St. Stephen's Cathedral is one of the few “light” buildings.

I happened to live in a small apartment in a building where mostly students rent housing. It was terribly cold in the apartment at night, the batteries were icy (later I realized that in Germany this problem is widespread, or rather, for them it is not a problem at all).

By the way, inexpensive housing in Passau can be found using a search engine - looking for the best deals on many sites at once!

The next morning, in the light of day, we began to tour the city. The route started from the river Inn embankment from the Fünferlsteg bridge. In the morning it was rather gloomy and gray.

In 10-15 minutes we reached Dreiflüsseeck - places where three rivers meet Donau, Inn and Ilz. They wrote on the Internet that a picturesque view opens up from this place, and the mixing water has different colors and shades. All this together makes up a beautiful landscape. And this is what appeared to my eyes.

Apparently, at the end of April-May, the water in the rivers is dirty and muddy due to the melting of snows. We are much more beautiful in Krasnoyarsk, I thought. 🙂

City Hall Passau

At 10:30, 14:00 and 15:30, you can hear the chime from the town hall tower.

In the building of the town hall, by the way, there is a tourist information center, where you can take free map in Russian... Near the information center, on the wall, there are marks on the water level in different years of floods, 2013 was clearly a bad year for the residents of Passau.

If you want to buy a painting or other pieces of art, do not forget to drop by höllgasse artists' street (you need to walk along the white house in the photo above, which, by the way, houses a glass museum).

St. Paul's Church in Passau

If you walk a little more along the Danube and turn a little inland, then you will find yourself at the Church of St. Paul with white and pink facade... To get inside, you need to go up the stairs to second floor.

The inside is rather unusual. The absolutely black altars with gilding contrast with the white unremarkable walls of the church.

Concert of the largest church organ in the world - the main attraction of Passau

One of the reasons for my stay in Passau was the largest organ in Europe (second in the world), the largest church organ in the world with 17974 trumpets, 233 sounding registers and 4 bells, located in St. Stephen's Cathedral. The reviews flashed information that every day at 12 noon they give a 30-minute organ concert, to listen to which tourists from nearby and not so cities come. And it is better to buy tickets in advance.

Time was approaching 12, it was time to go to the Cathedral and buy tickets. But then there was another bummer. It turns out that no concert was planned today (April 28) - this is how the limited time affected the preparation for this trip.

As I learned at home, these midday concerts are held with May 2nd to October 31st, except Sundays and holidays... Limited tickets at the box office, you can buy from 10:00 to 12:00. If you have a PassauCard, you still need to go to the ticket office and get your entrance ticket. From 10:45 am to 11:20 am, the Cathedral is closed for preparations for the concert, the entrance doors open from 11:20 am.

Ticket prices: adults 4€ , preferential (pupils, students, disabled people upon presentation of a certificate) 2€ .

There is also evening hour concert, from May to October at 19:30 only on Thursdays (except holidays). Price adults 10€ and preferential 5€ ... Entrance from 18:45.

You can even try to book tickets by email: [email protected]

At least I managed to photograph the handsome man.

The cathedral itself is decorated in the Baroque style, inside it looks festive, elegant with beautiful stucco molding:

Outside, the view is not so pompous. Immediately on the square formed food fair... They say it's very beautiful here at Christmas .. well, for now, something like that.

Fortress West Oberhaus in Passau

After a little twisting, we decided to go to the Veste Oberhaus Fortress and enjoy the views of Passau from above.

To do this, it was necessary to return along the Danube embankment to the Prinzregent-Luitpold bridge (208-meter suspension bridge), cross it to the opposite bank. Directly opposite, across the road, there are steps leading to the fortress.

For the especially lazy - you can get to the fortress by bus from the town hall square, runs every 30 minutes, fare 1,8€ .

Halfway there is a small lookout and a bench for those who are especially tired, the view from there is already pretty good.

But, not stopping there, we moved on. Another attraction of Passau can be seen directly opposite the fortress - monastery of the Virgin Mary of the Help (Kloster Mariahilf)... It is located on a hill on the opposite bank of the Inn River.

A covered gallery with 321 steps leads from the foot of the hill to the church.

Working hours from March 15 to November 15 - Mon-Fri from 9:00 to 17:00 (weekends and holidays from 10:00 to 18:00), from December 25 to January 6 (except December 31) - from 10 : 00 to 16:00. Adults entrance 5€ , preferential 4€ , family 10€ .

From above, Passau and its sights look so toy-like.

Meanwhile, the weather improved. We headed to wander the old center in search of famous currywurst sausage.

Old center of Passau

The sausages were not found immediately, but they were found very conveniently near supermarket REWE opposite the C&A store near the Passau train station ( nibelungenpl address. 5). As a student, we decided to sit on the Inna embankment.

In general, I spent less than a day in Passau, in principle this time was enough to get an impression of the town and see the main attractions. The city is nice, but rather small.

The next city on my way is. About that, I wrote earlier.

Other sights of Passau (behind the scenes)

For one reason or another, I was not able to visit these places, but maybe you will be interested in them:
