Last Wednesday we spent one day in a town in the south of the Czech Republic - Cesky Krumlov. In this article we will tell you how we organized our free time in Krumlov, what we did and how much we spent on the trip.
Before this trip, we visited Krumlov several times - both independently and as part of an organized excursion. I don't know why, but our trips to Krumlov always fall on the gloomy autumn-winter period: we have never been there either in summer or in spring. Therefore, this time we waited for a cloudless day and went for the shots of sunny Krumlov.
It was decided to go to Krumlov in the morning by bus from. We bought tickets for the green bus in advance. The bus traveled with a stop at the Andel metro station in Prague, as well as in the cities of Pisek and Ceske Budejovice. In total, the road from Prague to Krumlov took about 3 hours and 20 minutes. The bus was 70 percent busy: the fact that it was a weekday affected.
Thus, having left Prague at 8 am, we arrived in Krumlov at 11:25 am. This time turned out to be ideal for starting a walk: it has already gotten warmer, and -4 at night turned into comfortable for walking +2. There was a very good light for the photo, which we used, starting to shoot the city from a height on the first observation deck near the bus station in Krumlov. The historic center of the city is very compact and it is best to admire it from above. And the most colorful photos with houses with a tiled roof are obtained from observation platforms.
Some large observation decks have stands with a detailed map of the city. On the way from the bus station to the city center, we came across two observation platforms with stunning views that you will not see during group excursions.
It was decided to start the study of Krumlov with a tour of the Krumlov Castle, which, by the way, is the second largest castle in the Czech Republic after. The castle walls in this photo remind me of the German walls carved into the rock.
We have been to Krumlov so many times, but we have not visited either the castle or the observation deck on the tower. On this trip, we decided to catch up. Having bought a single ticket for visiting the castle museum and climbing the tower for 300 kroons, we went to see.
Unlike many other Czech castles, the Krumlov Castle Museum can be viewed without a guide. That is, you go through all the rooms yourself. And for your convenience, each of them provides explanatory texts in several languages, including Russian. The museum exhibited interior items, dishes, weapons, tiled stoves, portraits of representatives of the dynasties of the owners of the castle - the Schwarzenberg, Rosenberg and Eggenberg. And in the chambers of the Krumlov Castle, stoves are heated, so it is very warm.
Krumlov Castle has a rich history dating back to 1240. Since 1950, the castle has been the property of the state. In 1992, the castle and the historical center of Cesky Krumlov was included in the UNESCO list. Before entering, you can see its plan on a large convenient map.
It took us about 45 minutes to explore the castle museum, after which we climbed the tower. The tower of the Krumlov Castle can without exaggeration be called the hallmark of this town, along with the bear that lives near the castle. The tower is found on postcards and local souvenirs. To climb it, we had to climb 162 steps. In some areas, the stairs became too narrow and steep. Therefore, I want to warn you right away that only people in good shape will be able to climb this tower.
Your efforts will be rewarded with fabulous views of the castle complex, the center of Krumlov and the surrounding mountains.
From above, you can appreciate the power of the fast Vltava River, examine doll houses in every detail, and even see the main square of the city with a plague pillar.
In the center of the next photo is the Church of St. Vitus, which is one of the main city attractions along with the Krumlov Castle.
An alternative urban development is also visible from the tower - panel houses stretching into the horizon.
It was a weekday, and there were not so many people at the tower, so we managed to take a lot of good shots. We spent another half hour to visit the tower, that is, together with the tour of the castle museum - about 1.5 hours. After descending from the tower, it was decided to go to the castle park, the path to which passes through the bridge, from which the most impressive photos of Cesky Krumlov are taken. It is on this bridge (Czech Plášťový most) that both professional photographers and ordinary selfie lovers gather. In clear sunny weather, the views from here are indescribable.
And here is how unusual this bridge looks when you look at it from the city embankment.
Unfortunately, when we got to the park, we learned that it is closed for the winter, and is open from April to October. I think it would be very interesting to go there in the summer. Not long sad about this, we returned to the castle and walked to the Pod Radnicí restaurant. This place serves incredibly tasty trout with almond shavings, smoked beer and beer from the local brewery Krumlov (former Eggenberg) and Budweiser Budweiser, as well as traditional, solid Czech dishes - grilled hermeline, pork knee. We took trout and cold cuts. The average bill for a dinner for two with beer is 500 CZK. Be sure to keep the address of this establishment for yourself: Radniční 26.
At 15:00 hours, we have only a couple of hours left to explore the historic center of Krumlov. We leave the restaurant and literally from the doorway we catch an incredible shot - the castle tower drenched in the sun against the background of the blue sky.
During the walk we noticed many shops selling garnet and Czech green stone jewelry - vltavina. It should be noted that the majority of visitors to Krumlov stores are Chinese, so Chinese sellers are not uncommon here. By the way, the Chinese loved this town so much that Huawei began building a copy of Cesky Krumlov in China.
As we understand it, the Chinese are the main buyers in local stores. Not only jewelry stores, but also expensive Longchamp, Coach and Furla bags were opened for them in Krumlov.
Chinese tourists leave mountains of money in the city and leave it with heavy suitcases. Evaluate how these two are loaded with things.
Each house is a work of art. Beautiful wrought-iron signs on the houses reminded me of a German town.

The town has a quiet and measured atmosphere: this is a real oasis of calmness after the noisy tourist Prague. Local cats are in no hurry and bask in the sun.
In Krumlov, here and there you can find the original design of shops: for example, this photo shows the entrance to the shop of the famous pencils and paints Koh-i-noor.
There are gingerbread shops, Czech liqueurs, souvenir shops - you can't count everything. At the liquor store for 25 CZK you can taste your choice of liquor - with currant, cherry, pear and even carrot flavor! In the gingerbread shop - buy a commemorative gingerbread with the inscription “Cesky Krumlov”.
In the souvenir shops, in addition to postcards and the usual one, they sell magnets with motives of the city of bright colorful flowers. And there are also a lot of magnets with the brave soldier Schweik. The fact is that, according to Hasek's book, Svejk served precisely in South Bohemia, where Krumlov is located.
We visited the Botanicus natural soap and cosmetics store, buying fragrant soap with kiwi and lime, as well as soap with orange and lemon as a gift. They paid 200 kroons for the purchase. In my opinion, this is a great gift option for loved ones - aunt, grandmother, mother. It looks very smart and smells just divine.
After a little more looping along the streets of Krumlov, we went to the bus station, because our bus left in 40 minutes. Although it is not far from the center of Krumlov to the bus station - about 15 minutes at a quick pace. Not far from the bus station, a Coop supermarket was spotted. We waited for our bus in the covered terminal, where there is an arrival board, a free toilet and vending machines for coffee and snacks. This is what the bus station looks like from the side.
In conclusion, I would like to recommend an independent trip to Cesky Krumlov for those tourists who do not like excursions and want to explore this town at their own pace without haste. In addition to the bus, it is convenient to get to Krumlov by direct train (travel time - 3 hours) or. Car rental prices start at around € 25 per day. per person.
Czech Republic is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. There are many interesting places, including one of the most visited cities in South Bohemia, Česky Krumlov. This town is located on the banks of the Vltava River, near the border with Austria. It is considered a resort, so a lot of tourists come here regularly. Let's try to figure out how to get to Cesky Krumlov from Prague, how much it will cost and how long it will take.
How to get there: all possible ways
There are different ways to get to the fairytale town, as Cesky Krumlov is sometimes called. Moreover, you can get here from almost any city in the country, but most often travelers come from Prague. After all, Prague is the main transit point when arriving in the Czech Republic.
The distance from Prague to Krumlov is 174 kilometers, and to overcome it, there are two options:
- buy a tourist tour, the organization of which, and therefore the development of the route, will be carried out by professionals;
- travel independently, having received a lot of impressions from the trip, during which no one controls you.
Of course, the experienced traveler will choose the second option. However, if you are heading to the country for the first time, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the table in which the most popular ways of travel are considered:

How to get there by train
There are a minimum of direct flights on this route, despite the fact that the destination is very popular. There is only one direct train on the route Prague - Cesky Krumlov. This is express 531 Josef Seidel.
It departs from the main railway station in Prague at 8.02 am, and already at 10.50 you will be in Krumlov. The ticket price is only 195 CZK (from 7.61 euros).
On the way back, the train leaves at 14.07 and arrives in Prague at 16.57, so you will have enough time for an excursion. 
You can buy tickets for this train on the cd.cz website. In addition, on the site you can earn points (they are given for buying tickets) and then use them to buy a ticket at a lower price. Children under 5 years old can travel for free, and for children under 9 years old the ticket will cost 5.5 euros.
As an alternative to direct connections from Cesky Krumlov, Czech railways offer trains with transfers. The most popular alternative train route is Praha hl.n. - Český Krumlov looks like this:

- Os 8103 (train) from České Budějovice to Český Krumlov.

Buses in the Czech Republic are one of the most popular types of transport. It is no coincidence that the easiest way to get from Prague to Cesky Krumlov is by bus. Quite a lot of carriers operate on this route, since the direction is in high demand, which allows tourists to choose a schedule that suits them in all respects.
Here are some suggestions from the most popular carriers in the country.
However, few tourists are ready to drive their own car. In addition, you can get to your destination by taxi. If you do not plan to stay in the city, a taxi in the Czech Republic is very convenient. From Prague airport you can get to Krumlov by taxi for about 130-140 euros. If you are traveling with a company, then by dividing this amount, you will receive from 35 to 45 euros per passenger.
For convenience, we recommend booking a taxi, as taxi drivers who stand near the airport slightly overestimate their rates. In case of booking, the car will be waiting for you immediately upon arrival. However, when booking, they usually ask for a prepayment.
How to rent a car

All options are good in their own way, but the most convenient way is to go by car. If you do not want to drive the car yourself, use a taxi service. 1. Ready excursions to Krumlov from Prague
Without a doubt, a guided tour is one of the most convenient ways to visit the city. Here is a list of those tested:
- - a trip for 12 hours, in a group there can be up to 50 people, the price includes transfer and guide services.
- - by car with an individual Russian-speaking guide, the duration of the tour is 10 hours (less time, because less is spent on the road by car), the cost is indicated for 1-4 people, i.e. for the car, and not for everyone, the price also includes a visit to the Hluboka nad Vltavou castle (although a ticket to the castle is paid separately at the box office and costs ~ 8 €).
- - price for 1-6 people, also with comfort from Prague by car and an individual guide.
All excursions include a visit to the Krumlov Castle and walks around the city with a professional guide.
2. Bus Prague - Krumlov
If you go from Prague to Krumlov on your own, then the bus will be the best transport option. There are several reasons for this: inexpensive, comfortable, several direct flights daily, and the bus station in Cesky Krumlov is located near the center, i.e. from her all the most interesting close.
Direct flights of RegioJet (yellow Czech buses) and Flixbus (green German buses) run from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, we preferred to travel on the latter. Here is the standard timetable from Prague to Cesky Krumlov on the green Flixbas buses:

3. By train to Cesky Krumlov on your own
The train, in my personal opinion, is a less preferred option. And here's why: it is more expensive than a bus, the railway station of Cesky Krumlov is located, frankly, on the outskirts, little like a medieval city in general, plus it is inconvenient to get to the center from the station - public transport in the city is poorly developed. Well, the main drawback: the direct train Prague Cesky Krumlov runs only once a day - it departs at 8:01 from the main Prague station Praha hlavní nádraží.
The rest of the time, you will have to go through the city of České Budějovice, where trains from Prague leave every hour. That is, you first need to come to it, then change to a train to Krumlov. Train tickets in the Czech Republic can be purchased online without any problems - here are my instructions on how to do this.
For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that the train schedule is designed in such a way that you don't have to wait long at the Ceske Budejovice train station, literally got off the first train, just like a few minutes later the departure of another.
You can also plan your trip in such a way as to come to the first city, explore it - and then go to Cesky Krumlov.
It takes only half an hour to go from Ceske Budejovic to Cesky Krumlov, either by train or by bus. Both those and others go very often, so this option also has the right to life. Especially if you want to see something else in the South Bohemian region, besides Krumlov.
Conclusion: excursions are expensive, but fast and convenient; buses - cheap and comfortable; trains - with transfers and not very convenient due to remote stations.
Where to stay
The areas closest to the center are marked with green and scarlet colors, in which it is also quite comfortable to stay - within walking distance from Krumlov Castle and other attractions, and more attractive prices may be a plus.
Where to eat in Krumlov
Most of the restaurants in Cesky Krumlov are located in the historical center, where you can go to any restaurant you like - their number on a small peninsula tends to a hundred. Even ancient water mills are transformed into bars here.
Outside the center, continuous residential areas begin, in which the tourist infrastructure is practically not developed. This is one of the reasons why I advise you to settle in the center - the sights and transport are close, and you shouldn't die of hunger either.
There are also restaurants in many hotels, and therefore when booking accommodation, I advise you to pay attention to the reviews of other guests.
We had to look for a place to eat in Cesky Krumlov while walking. So on the square that is right at the gate to the Krumlov castle, we noticed the Bistro - a small cafe with Czech fast food. But these were by no means burgers or something like that, but traditional fried cheese (grease) with vegetable salad, or meat balls with potatoes and again a bunch of vegetables. Everything is tasty and nutritious, and this abundance costs from 60 crowns.

The main attractions of Cesky Krumlov
It is not for nothing that this small cozy town is so popular among tourists. It contains many unique historical cultural and architectural monuments.
Krumlov castle
Without doubt, the most significant building in Cesky Krumlov is its stunning castle. It literally grows out of the rock and looks very monumental.
The land, along with the castle complex, often changed owners and appearance, the present appearance has been preserved since the 18th century. Inside the castle there are both underground premises and open squares, but the so-called Cloak Bridge overlooking the magnificent gardens looks especially extraordinary.
Castle gardens
Quite a vast park area, immersed in flowers, fountains and labyrinths of green spaces. A walk in the castle garden is absolutely free.
Also on the territory of the garden there is an old theater, where performances are still occasionally staged, which seem to be carried over hundreds of years ago.
Minorite monastery
The Minorite Monastery is a building of the Gothic style, after rebuilding it received a Baroque look. In the center of the site is the Church of the Body of God, while the interior decoration includes sculptures of the Saints, the altar of the Mother of God and the rarest manuscripts. Now on the territory of the monastery, in addition to the main monastery, there are wonderful workshops where you can make a souvenir with your own hands.
Not far from the Austrian border, on the banks of the Vltava River, is the Czech city of Krumlov, whose territory is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can see its sights by leaving any place in the Czech Republic, but the most popular among tourists is the Prague - Krumlov direction.
Although the distance from the Czech capital to Krumlov is only 175 km, you can get to the town by different means of transport: bus, taxi, train or car. Each option has a number of advantages and disadvantages, which you will learn about in our article.
Bus route Prague - Krumlov
The simplest and most affordable travel option for tourists is the Prague-Krumlov bus route. Travelers from Russia, as statistics and reviews show, usually get to Krumlov by buses.
What buses run from Prague to Krumlov
There are many flights in this direction, and after exploring the city it will not be difficult to return to Prague again by public transport on your own. In this case, you need to check the bus timetables of the StudentAgency, FlixBus, LEO Express and BeanShuttle busses. On these regular minibuses it will be possible to independently get to Krumlov.
- StudentAgency. Travelers who are interested in the question of how to get from Prague to Krumlov by bus faster, first of all, we recommend that you study the flight schedule of the Student Agency. This can be done on the official website or at the bus stops located on Knizhetsi in the Smichov area. From here, a trip from Prague to Krumlov can be carried out at any time in the morning or afternoon, StudentAgency runs from 6:00 to 21:00. StudentAgency minibuses are on the way for 2 hours 55 minutes. To go to Krumlov on them, you have to pay 5.2 euros per person. And it's better to book them on the RegioJet website.
- FlixBus. Florenc Bus Station is the departure point for FlixBus buses. This route will be convenient for those tourists who want to know how to get from Prague to Krumlov from an international flight or from the center of the Czech capital. A bus pass is more expensive. It costs 11 euros for an adult passenger. Travel time is 2.5 hours.
- LEO Express. From the Florenc bus station, you can reach South Bohemia with LEO Express, the ticket price of which is 8.3 euros. The duration of the trip is the same as in the previous routes.
- BeanShuttle. Shuttle buses leave from the Na Knizhetsi bus station and from the bus stop located at the HotelAkcent. First, they call in at the Vaclav Havel airport for passengers who are taken to hotels in Krumlov. BeanShuttle leaves the Czech capital at different times: at 9:00, 13:00, 16:30. The shuttle bus stops at the airport at exit E of the first terminal. The travel card costs 800 CZK. Since transport calls into the airport, it stays on the way longer than other flights - 3 hours.
How to get from the airport to the city bus stop
Travelers who missed the shuttle bus need to know exactly how to find a stop in the city and from where minibuses go to Krumlov. We recommend using bus route no. 191, departing from Vaclev Gavala airport, where you need to get to the stop "Na Knizhetsi". You can also take the yellow line B by metro to get to the bus station, from where StudentAgency departs. In this case, you need to get off at the station "Andel".
How to buy bus tickets
In order not to waste time buying travel documents at bus stops, we recommend doing this on the StudentAgency website. To do this, you need to perform a number of actions:
- Select departure date, indicate departure, arrival points and age.
- At the point of arrival, choose ČeskýKrumlov AN from the offered number of options. It is a central bus termination point.
- Select a flight after reviewing the information on all routes. Passengers are offered direct routes from which there will be no need to change trains. To get information about the flight, find out how long it takes to go and when the bus leaves, you need to press the blue I button in the order form.
- Then press the button "buy" and "select seats".
- Fill in all the necessary information about passengers in the order form and pay.

You can also travel from Prague to Cesky Krumlov using e-tickets saved on your phone, but it is better to print them on paper after purchase.

You need to get on the bus exactly at the stop from which each route departs: StudentAgency and LEO Express depart from Knizhetsi; FlixBus can be found on the first platform of the ÚAN FlorencPraha train station, located at Křižíkova 6, Praha 8, next to the Florenc metro station (line B / C); BeanShuttle shuttle buses run from Knizhetsi or at exit E of Terminal 1 at Vaclav Havel Airport.
The final stop in Krumlov for all flights is located at the ČeskýKrumlov AN station.
When learning how to get to Krumlov by bus, you need to consider how many kilometers the distance between points, and the seasonal nature of the bus schedule. Public transport runs at different times in summer and winter.
The fare can also be paid to the driver at the time of boarding, but in this case travelers are not entitled to free seats, and they will have to ride standing for more than 2 hours. Under Czech law, intercity buses first accommodate passengers with tickets that indicate seats.
Departure to Cesky Krumlov by train
Often, tourists prefer to get to Cesky Krumlov by train. This type of transport departs from the Main Railway Station of the Czech capital, which is a half-hour walk from the center. If you don't have enough time for a walk, then you can get here for 128 kroons by taxi.
Direct trains to Krumlov run 1 or 2 times a day. The railway transport in this direction is often used with changes, changing in Český Budejovice or Prachatice to the Aeroexpress bus. Many tourists are interested in the question: how long will it take to travel in this case? You don't have to worry, Aeroexpress trains run fast - you will spend about 40 minutes on the way, and a ticket will cost 51 kroons. This method of transportation is suitable for young tourists traveling light and without small children.
Travelers choosing rail transport with transfers should decide on the train and route, since you can get from Prague to Cesky Krumlov by train at different times by several routes:
- We leave Prague to the Cesky Budejovica station, and then by train or public transport we get to our destination. Trains leave HlavníNádraží station every two hours, and you will be on the way from 2.3 to 3.5 hours. The ticket costs 282 kroons. If the train is delayed, you will not be late for the train, as it is always waiting for him. Sometimes tourists get off at the Krasetin station and from there take a lift to the mountain.
- The second route runs through Сeske, Вudejovice, to which the train departs from the Prahahl.n station of the Main Station. Transport is on Wilsonova street 8. You will need the R train, which takes 2 hours 27 minutes to CeskeBudejovice. The ticket will cost 6-9 euros. At the CeskeBudejovice station, change to the Os train and drive another 45 minutes to Krumlov. The ticket will cost 1-2 euros. You can also get from Ceske Budejovice to the destination in half an hour by bus. The bus station is located opposite the train station. Minibuses from České Budějovice leave at hourly intervals. It will take half an hour to go. The ticket price is 33 CZK.
- On a retro train through Prachatice. This is the longest way, but the ticket is inexpensive, and the views outside the window will definitely not let you get bored on the way.
If you decide to travel from Prague to Cesky Krumlov by bike, you should find out exactly how many kilometers you will have to cover. Depending on the route chosen, the distance can be from 200 to 380 km. This trip usually takes 8 hours.
By taxi
This option is chosen by tourists who want to get there as quickly and comfortably as possible. There are quite a few advantages of taking a taxi. Firstly, it will be possible to use transport at any time of the day, including at night. Secondly, you can order a transfer in advance. And thirdly, the taxi driver will immediately take you anywhere in the city. Usually this option is chosen by families with children, the elderly, tourists arriving at night or small groups of travelers.
It will take about 2.5 hours to get by taxi. Of course, the travel time depends on the destination in Krumlov. The cost of the trip starts from 126 euros and depends on the class of the car. In this case, the driver will take you to the specified address and will wait at a certain place when ordering a transfer.
