Ruins at sunset

Like many other cities in Turkey, Side has ancient Greek roots. The first information in ancient sources about Side dates back to the 7th century BC. It was founded by people from the city of Kim Aeolian, which was the second largest settlement in the region at that time (after Smyrna).

The local population 2,700 years ago spoke the Sidet language, which is extinct and belongs to the Indo-European family. In one of the Anatolian dialects of the Greek language "Side" means "pomegranate". In antiquity, the city belonged to the Pamphylia region and was its largest port. The location for the construction was well chosen - along the port on both sides. Already in the 5th century BC. the city minted its own coins.

In 334 BC. the army of Alexander the Great entered it without meeting any resistance. After the collapse of the unified empire of Alexander the Great, the city was owned by the Hellenistic states, ruled by the Ptolemies and Seleucids. In 190 BC. it became the site of rivalry between Rhodes and Syria. It is interesting that the fleet of the latter was commanded by the famous commander Hannibal from Carthage, and the Romans supported Rhodes in that war. In the II century BC. Side turned out to be a relatively free city, located between the possessions of the Seleucids and the state of Pergamum. It was in those years that the new port of Attalia (now Antalya) appeared.

Side became famous as a pirate base. They were defeated by the Romans in 78 BC, and by the end of the century the city became part of the province of Galatia. Until the 3rd century BC. it flourished, in its best years it was inhabited by 60 thousand people. It was during this period of its history that most of the surviving ruins belong.

From the 4th century A.D. the Christian period of the history of Side began. First, the city experienced decline due to the raids of the highlanders, and then revival, as it became the seat of the bishop of Eastern Pamphylia. The hospital building has survived from those years. In the 7th century, it was often ruined by Arab pirates, which is why the city again experienced a period of decline and desolation.

In the Seljuk period, it was known as “Old Antalya”. During the years of the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic, it was never able to regain its former glory, and by the beginning of the XXI century it had about 10 thousand people.

Climate

The southern coast of Turkey belongs to the Mediterranean climate zone, so Side does not fundamentally differ from Antalya or Alanya. This area is characterized by hot and dry summers. Winters are cool but mild.

Average temperatures reach 28 degrees in July and August, while in winter they drop to 10-12 degrees. In the winter months there is from 200 to 220 mm of precipitation, and in summer their amount is less than 10 mm, in August, for example, 2. September and May are also characterized by an almost complete absence of precipitation. In October there are about 70 mm of them, but you can still rest, the velvet season, fewer tourists and lower hotel prices.

The number of hours of sunshine is 12-13 in the summer months and 5 in December and January. The sea water temperature in July reaches 28 degrees. In October it is 24 degrees, and in May - 20. The minimum water temperature is observed in February - 16 degrees.

So, it is best to come to Side in summer, but the velvet season in October also has its advantages:

 • Sometimes it rains, so the photos will be more varied: Waterfalls look more beautiful;
 • Prices are lower;
 • There is no heat.

Turkish cuisine

Kitchen

You can eat at the hotel, where a buffet is often offered, and in numerous catering establishments. Their density is especially high on the southern cape, between the museum and the Ataturk monument. There are fewer of them in the part of the city north of the bus station, but there you can find McDonald's, Burger King, various bakeries and pizzerias.

Some “Pide-Kebap Salonu” operate from 9 am to 3 am. The cheapest food costing a few liras per serving is boat-shaped cakes (pide), Turkish pizzas (lahmajun), side dishes like pasta and beans, local manti in yoghurt (they have little resemblance to the usual Central Asian ones). The restaurants have a wide selection of Turkish and European cuisine.

What to try in Turkey? Baklava is worth noting of the sweets. It is satisfying, sometimes a couple of bites are enough to satisfy your hunger. It can be pistachio or contain chocolate nougat. Of the hearty and spicy meat dishes, one can name kokrech, that is, lamb giblets on a spit.

Other than that, it's worth trying:

 • Balyk-ekmek - fresh fish with bread;
 • Simit - bagels;
 • Dondurma ice cream;
 • Iskander Kebab;
 • Chig kofte - meat patties.

Sale of souvenirs

Shopping

Side is not the best city for shopping in Turkey. It is small, so it is better to go shopping and shopping centers in neighboring Antalya before flying back. For example, Lidl, Bim, Carrefour and Migros stores can be found on Kemer Boulevard between the beach area and the D-400 highway.

The Migros shopping center is located along the same road. The city has several small markets where bargaining is common, for example when shopping for clothes. The main products to look out for in Turkey are: clothing, jewelry, tea, sweets, fabrics, dishes, wine.

Archeology Museum in Side

sights

The main attraction of Side can be considered ancient ruins - some of the best on the peninsula of Asia Minor. They are located on a promontory in the southern part of the city. The most interesting object is the Roman theater, which could seat 15-20 thousand people.

The city walls, Hellenistic gates, broken columns, a square Agora, the Temple of Fortune, the Temple of Dionysus, a public bathhouse with sarcophagi from the Roman period have survived. In addition to these ruins, a nymph (an artificial grotto near the bus station), an aqueduct, and three temples have survived on the cape in the city.

The city museum is located next to the ruins on the cape. It is open from 08:30 to 19:30. Its visit costs 15 liras. The museum exposition reflects all periods of the city's history: Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine. It displays samples of weapons, as well as amphorae, sarcophagi, statues, tombstones. All this was found during excavations in 1947-1967. In general, it does not fundamentally differ from other archaeological museums in the seaside part of Turkey.

Antique theater

From the central part of Side, you can organize a hiking trip north to the Taurus Mountains. After Manavgat, there will be the Bucakseyhler settlement, and behind it are the ruins of the ancient city of Seleucia. Once the Roman general Maar Antony built this fortress in the mountains to protect Side. It is little studied, in 1975 a short excavation was carried out. In the 7th century, it was abandoned due to drought. Now, among the objects of Seleucia, one can observe the agora, gates, mausoleum, Roman baths, and a necropolis. All this splendor is hidden among the pine forest.

Here are a few more places to visit:

 • Keprelu Canyon. The national park was created in 1973. Its depth reaches 400 meters and it stretches 14 km along the river bank. The recreation area has a preserved Roman bridge, and there are fish restaurants serving trout dishes.
 • Ruins of the ancient city of Selge. Once it was densely populated, the army of Alexander the Great passed by its walls in 333 BC. and the Goths in the 5th century A.D. Now you can see the ruins of a theater, a well-preserved Roman bridge, the remains of an aqueduct and walls.
 • Tilkiler Cave. It is named after the nearest village and is located north of Side and the ruins of Seleucia. The cave was discovered in 1976, it has a length of 6.5 km and a depth of 160 meters. It is the third longest in Turkey.
 • Oymapinar Dam. It was built according to a Soviet project in 1984 on the Manavgat River, 12 km from the settlement of the same name.
 • Manavgat waterfall. It is located on the same river just 3 km from the city of the same name. It is really possible to get from Side on foot. It is adjacent to shady tea gardens. Where to stay for rest. This waterfall was once depicted on the Turkish 5 lira banknote (1968-1983).

Manavgat itself is located on both banks of the river of the same name. In the western part of the city you can visit the lunapark and several green areas, and in the eastern part there is a cinema.

Water area in Side

Various beach activities are also available in Side, for example, diving with a Russian-speaking guide to the first underwater museum in the waters of Turkey. It costs $ 45 and runs from April to October. The museum has about 110 exhibits on historical and cultural topics.

The city has two beaches - East and West. The second is more suitable for families with children, since the entrance to the water is shallow. On the Vostochny, the entrance to the water is steep, but it is suitable for diving and water attractions. In addition to them, in search of beaches, you can go to Colakli, where there are good beaches for children, as well as to Kyzylagach and Kumkoy.

The atmosphere of relaxation in Side - in the video:

What else do you need to know about rest?

In terms of security, Side is quite a prosperous city. Basic security measures are needed. In summer, it is good to have a hat, light clothing and sunscreen with you.

There are no special problems with the Internet, wifi is available in hotels and catering establishments. You can call Russia from the phone of a mobile operator. Their tariffs are different, for example, 200 rubles for 20 minutes.

When planning a trip to Side, keep in mind the holidays in Turkey. They are celebrated on April 23 (Children's Day), May 1 (Labor Day), May 19 (Youth Day), August 30 (Victory Day), October 29 (Republic Day). Also, on May 18, they can be admitted to the museum free of charge, if they know about it themselves.

Thus, Side is suitable for both educational and beach holidays.

The sights of Side in Turkey are what is worth coming to this ancient Turkish city. A relatively small area accommodates about a dozen magnificent architectural monuments. Which ones, you ask? Read my review and find out where to go and what to see in Side and its immediate surroundings!

What to see in the city of Side

Side is a picturesque town 75 km west of Antalya. In ancient times it was surrounded by fortress walls, which are still in good condition. Rest in Side will turn out to be rich and exciting if you prepare in advance for the trip. For example, find out where the main city attractions are located, and how much money you need to set aside for visiting them. So, where to go in Side itself?

If you want not hackneyed excursion programs from guides, then you can read my article about the unusual ones that the locals organize for you.

One of the city's main attractions is located in the historic district of Side. Date of construction - III century A.D. Today only a small part of the once large-scale structure has survived. Scientists are sure that before the temple was divided into several equal parts. The main room had standard proportions, measuring 7 m by 17 m. It stood on a high podium.

A staircase of several steps led to the interior. The central entrance was decorated with tall columns and red granite at the base. Look for the remains of a temple near Harbor Street. Nearby is the Roman Theater. Entrance is free and round the clock.

Another interesting and ancient attraction is the Temple of Apollo. Presumably built in the 2nd century A.D. It was badly damaged after the earthquake that hit the city in the 10th century. The temple is protected at the state level. According to the documents, the building was rectangular.

Rows of columns surrounded it on all sides. Today we can see only five intact columns, each reaching a height of almost 9 m. The upper part of the temple was decorated with bas-reliefs in the form of medusa heads and floral ornaments.

The Temple of Apollo is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, in the southwestern part of Side. You can look at it at any time of the day or night and is completely free. After sunset, a beautiful backlight turns on here. Part of the attraction is fenced off.

Temple of Apollo in Side

An excellent example of Roman heritage, the "relative" of the immortal Colosseum is the Turkish amphitheater in Side. For a long time it served as an arena for brutal gladiatorial battles involving wild animals. Construction began in the 2nd century BC. The building was designed for 16 thousand spectators.

The stage was on two levels. It was decorated with beautiful statues, columns and bas-reliefs. Initially, theatrical performances were going to be shown here, only later the idea came to turn the arena into a place for fighting between animals and people. In the 6th century, the building was used as a temple, then it was subjected to earthquakes and countless wars.

Today, the amphitheater hosts musical and theatrical performances, excursions. The rows, galleries, central entrance and stage have been preserved in good condition.

The entrance to the territory of the amphitheater costs 30 Turkish lira (about 330 rubles). Working hours: from 8:00 to 17:30.

The monumental architectural structure was erected in honor of mythical creatures - Nymphs. The water was supplied to the fountain by an aqueduct laid from the Manavgat River. They say that all the inhabitants of the city quenched their thirst from it.

Look for this attraction in the northeastern part of the city. Nearby are the central city gates. The fountain was built in 3 floors. Its height is 5 m, width - 35 m. Today, 2 floors have been preserved in good condition. The sides are decorated with marble and intricate ornamentation. Some elements have been moved to the city museum.

Agora

In the ancient Greek period, the Agora was the name of the central trading square. On it, not only trade was conducted, but important issues from the life of the city were also resolved. The Agora housed tents, temples, and craft workshops. It was fenced around the perimeter, decorated with columns and pilasters.

In Side, there is still a square, erected in the II century BC. It had a quadrangular shape, with a total area of 90 m². It housed the Tyukhe temple and a public toilet for 24 places - laprina. The temple was erected in honor of the goddess of luck, the patroness of the city of Tyukhe.

Getting to the Agora by public transport is inconvenient, but possible. The nearest bus stop is 3 km from the attraction. It's called SideOtogarı. The regular bus number 639 goes here. From the stop, go south-west. The entrance to the Agora is free and round the clock.

The Archaeological Museum is located in the historic district of the city, near the amphitheater. It consists of 4 rooms. The first contains rare bas-reliefs of the Hellenistic period, a collection of sundials, sacrificial attributes. The second room contains sculptures from the Roman period. The third - statues, inscriptions, torsos. In the fourth room there are ancient Roman tombs, statues of gods, portraits of kings.

Exhibits can be touched with hands, photographed against their background. The museum itself is equipped with ancient Roman baths. The guides begin their stories with an excursion about the significance of the Roman baths for society. By the way, the excursions are informative and inexpensive. The entrance ticket is 10 liras (≈110 rubles). Working hours: from 9:00 to 17:00.

What to see in the vicinity of Side

This Turkish city is often referred to as an open-air museum. But in the vicinity of Side there is something to see. We advise you to rent a car and go on an exciting journey on your own. Car rental offices are located in the city center. Where should you go?

The first thing that is advised to see in the vicinity of Cité is a picturesque waterfall. The exact address of the attraction is SarılarMahallesi, İstiklalcaddesi no: 4, 07330 Manavgat / Antalya, Turkey. It is 3 km northeast of Side.

Nearby is the eponymous city of Manavgat. The waterfall is 40 m wide and 2 m high. This is an artificial structure that was created during the construction of a local reservoir. It often goes under water, especially in early spring, when there is a flood.

The waterfall is surrounded on all sides by food stalls, stalls, small restaurants, which, by the way, serve excellent fish dishes. But prices are above average. Lots of greenery, conifers, flowers. The entrance to the territory is paid - 6 lira (≈65 rubles). Taking pictures is allowed.

It is an ancient and picturesque town 27 km from Side. According to the chronicles, Aspendos was founded immediately after the Trojan War. The excellent geographical position, mild climate in a short time turned the city into a prosperous trade center. Here they laid out vineyards and olive groves, bred horses, which were valued in all cities of the ancient world.

Today the tourist infrastructure is poorly developed here. Most of the visitors prefer a one-day return trip to Side. There are no large entertainment centers, supermarkets, hotel complexes in Aspendos.

You need to come here for the sake of the beautiful Roman amphitheater - the main city attraction. Once upon a time, it could accommodate over 1000 people. 39 rows of steps lead to the arena. The basilica and the ruins of the aqueduct, which supplied the city with water for many years, are located 1 km from the amphitheater. By the way, it is still considered the largest in southern Turkey.

If you are going to Aspendos by car, you need the D400 route. After the village of Serik, the BelkisAspendos sign will appear.

Advice! Please wear comfortable shoes and bring food and water with you. There are almost no shops in Seleucia. Be careful, watch your step. The risk of stumbling and injury is high. A wonderful panorama opens up from the ruins, it is worth taking a camera with you.

The city of Perge is essentially an archaeological ruin. There is no infrastructure here. Arrive here early in the morning and return to Side after dusk.

Green Canyon

There is a beautiful oasis 40 km from Side - a reserve in the Taurus mountains. It stands near the Oymapinar reservoir. The total area of the reserve is 14 km. The purest turquoise water, mountains, dense vegetation create excellent conditions for a calm contemplative rest.

In the Green Canyon you can go fishing, boating, diving and swimming. You can inspect the area from the observation deck. There are cafes and shops nearby, but it is undesirable to stay in the Green Canyon with an overnight stay. The entrance to the territory is free.

The waterfall is located in the Turkish national park of the same name, in a pine-cedar forest. The grand opening took place in 1986. The name means "lead" because of the dark color of the falling water. The waterfall appeared with the help of the tributaries of the Aksu River. Its height is 18 m.

The water falls into the purest blue lake, it turns out very beautifully. It is forbidden to swim in it, but you can walk a little and find yourself in one of the lagoons. Ducks swim in them, a lot of fish. They say that if you touch the water and make a wish, it will certainly come true.
