Climbers living in the European part of Russia mainly strive to get to the Caucasus, where the highest peaks of Russia are located. In the Asian part, they mainly go to conquer Altai and Mount Belukha. Climbing routes of the Sayan Mountains in the south of Siberia are known mainly to travelers living in this region. Meanwhile, there are very interesting and exciting climbing trails.

The highest peak of the Sayan Mountains, Munku-Sardyk, is of the greatest interest for travelers, its height is 3491 meters. Buryats, Mongols and Soyots consider this mountain sacred.

The Russian geographer Gustav Radde climbed it for the first time in April 1858.

Today, anyone, even a novice climber, can conquer this peak.

What is the best way to climb the Eternal Loach, so in translation from the Buryat it is called Munku-Sardyk, she told the readers of the "Russian Planet" Nina Novikova... She knows Sayany quite well and has climbed Munku-Sardyk four times along her different routes.

What is the best way to get to the starting point of the ascent? Where to stay before and after the ascent?

Climbing Munku-Sardyk begins with registration of a border pass. To get to the starting point, you need to cross the border post, because we are driving along the highway that goes directly to Mongolia.

It is advisable to submit documents 2 months before the start of the ascent, sometimes you can do it in 1 month. It is necessary to fill out a small form and send it along with a scanned passport to the FSB department of Russia in the Republic of Buryatia.

Another option is to issue a pass on the State Services website online. If you are going to climb with a guide, it is best to contact the company, they will do everything for you, there is no need to worry about anything.

Usually they get to the starting point by their own car, it is left on the White Irkut River.

If you plan to climb during the May holidays - these are the days of mass ascents, then there will be a bus transfer on these dates. The base camp, as a rule, is located on the Strelka - this is the confluence of the White Irkut and Muguvek rivers. There is a nice meadow and forest here.

The third option of the camp is to spend the night on the lake under the summit, it takes longer to go there, and there is no forest, only snow and ice, gas instead of firewood.

The best time to climb

A comfortable time is May, early May, May holidays, you can take the end of April, mid-May is no longer comfortable, because the river runs strongly below and there is a danger of avalanches. Autumn and summer are also a very interesting time for climbing, but at this time the hikes are harder, because there is no snow and ice, only stones and water, you have to ford, or go through the passes.

Guide. Where to get it? Can you do without it?
Since I am a mountaineer, I made my first ascents as part of a mountaineering camp. And already with experience, we made the ascents by a company of friends-climbers on our own.

Beginners climbing with a qualified mountaineering instructor will receive a climbing certificate.

This requires a week of vacation. You can walk along other interesting and beautiful routes. There are enough of them in this area.

The main rules for beginners when hiking in the mountains

Climbing to a height of 3491 meters is not a walk in the park or running on a simulator in a fitness center. In addition to experience, climbing requires physical and mental preparation. At this altitude, altitude sickness is already manifested, we call it "miner".

If you are going to go to Munku-Sardyk, you should know what climbing crampons, an ice ax, a zhumar, a harness, a rope, a safety mustache itself, should be able to use them, in general, be fully competent in this matter.

There were "funny" stories when a man walked with an ice ax and did not understand why he needed it. You don't need to set a goal to climb as high as possible, you need to adequately weigh your strengths and understand when you need to turn around in time.

Avalanches, of course, happen, as elsewhere in the mountains. On the days of a mass ascent, rescuers are on duty on the route, they report on the situation and in case of danger they simply do not let anyone up the mountain.

As for emergency situations, it should be said that in recent years, during the May holidays during mass ascents, the number of accidents is increasing. A crowd of unprepared people on the mountain is unsafe, stones fall from under the feet of such climbers, knocking down those below. There are situations when a person does not know what to do when he falls, this can lead to the most sad consequences.

Another situation - a person simply becomes blind from not wearing sunglasses, this blindness goes away, but not immediately, but such a climber still has to be evacuated.

If you listened carefully to the lecture on safety, you can avoid an emergency situation, and if it happened, get out of it.

Equipment

First of all, you need to take your head with you!

To personal equipment for climbing a simple route (1B):
- helmet, crampons, ice ax, harness, self-belay mustache, carbines (3 + 1)
On a simple route, a zhumar is not needed. There the rope is pulled, just everyone clings to it with a self-belay.
This is a list of legions only for the "iron" for the ascent.
If you take a completely individual, not including group equipment, then:

  1. Climbing boots (trekking, if they are good at minus) for climbing - a pair.
  2. Bivouac shoes - pair.
  3. Shoes from bridge to frog (spare trekking or rubber boots) - a pair, optional.
  4. Thin socks - more, taking into account the length of stay.
  5. Woolen socks - larger, taking into account the length of stay.
  6. Thermal underwear - a set, you can replace it.
  7. Fleece pants - 1 pc.
  8. Waterproof and windproof pants - 1 pc.
  9. Fleece sweatshirt - you can have two pairs, thin and thick.
  10. Windproof windbreaker with a hood - 1 pc.
  11. Down jacket with a hood - 1 pc.
  12. Fleece gloves (woolen) - at least 2 pairs.
  13. Windproof mittens (gaiters) - pair.
  14. Fleece hat (woolen) - 2 pcs.
  15. Balaclava (face mask) - if available, optional.
  16. Bandana (Panama) - if available, optional.
  17. Hamash - a pair.
  18. Cats are a couple.
  19. Helmet - 1 pc.
  20. Ice ax - 1 pc.
  21. Safety system - 1 pc.
  22. Self-belaying mustache - 1 pc.
  23. Carbines - 1 is possible, 3 is better
  24. Tourist telescopic sticks (folding) - pair.
  25. Sunglasses - a pair.
  26. Sunscreen cream.
  27. Headlamp - 1 pc. with spare batteries.
  28. Personal hygiene items are optional.
  29. KLMN (mug-spoon-bowl-knife) - you can use chopsticks, of course.
  30. Thermos - 1 pc.
  31. Tourist backpack 80 liters or more - 1 pc.
  32. Assault backpack - if available, on request.
  33. Touring rug - 1 piece, better 2.
  34. Popper - 1 pc., Optional.
  35. Very, very warm sleeping bag - 1 pc.

Climbing option is the first, the easiest

The easiest option is to climb the Northwest Slope (1B). A special cable is pulled along it, for which they cling with a self-belaying mustache. The route is not difficult, sometimes stones fall.

Second, more difficult

More difficult is 2A. This is an ice-snow route along the northern slope (glacier). The angle of inclination, respectively, is not the same as on 1B, more abruptly. In some years, the route is on ice without a snow trail, the difference is correspondingly different. The main equipment is supplemented with a rope, guy lines, drills. There are no railings there, so the insurance is organized independently, we go in bundles with a rebelay at the station - this is all for those who are in the know, not for beginners.

The third, difficult, for "advanced"

There are four possible climbing options:

  • Along the western ridge from the saddle of the lane MNR -1B * k.s.
  • Along the eastern ridge -1B * c.s.
  • Along the northern ice slope - 2A class
  • From the south of Lake Khubsugul, from the side of Mongolia.

Climbing Munku-Sardyk (3491 meters) - the highest point of the Sayan Mountains - is a serious test for trained tourists. In summer, the route is quite simple, but in winter its complexity increases significantly: short daylight hours, negative air temperatures, icy snowy slopes - all this complicates the ascent.

  • 6 years of experience in organizing winter ascents
  • Dozens of climbers of different ages have visited the summit
  • Upon completion, a certificate of ascent is issued, as well as a commemorative badge of the tourist club
  • All necessary group winter equipment is provided

This region of the Eastern Sayan Mountains compares favorably with the rest with its little snow. In the foothills, there is practically no snow at all. That allows you to hike and climb on foot, without skis and the use of snowshoes. Also, the region is characterized by clear frosty weather in winter. Average temperatures are -25 ° ... -35 ° С, which for us, residents of central Russia, may seem very impressive. But for the Eastern Sayan region this is not so much, children continue to go to school, since the air is dry and such temperatures are tolerated much easier than "here".

The Munku-Sardyk peak is located on the very border of Russia and Mongolia. Climbing this hard-to-reach peak presupposes excellent physical fitness and sufficient athletic training. Only then will you be able to climb the majestic peak.

Climbing Munku-Sardyk passes through the most beautiful harsh places, the passage through which delivers a lot of positive emotions and impressions. The highlight of the area is the abundance of ice and icefalls, such huge blue icefalls you are unlikely to meet anywhere else. Well, to visit Baikal in winter is also worth a lot. Overnight in a special tent-hangar "Artktika" for winter hikes with a stove, so you won't get cold.

Mount Munku-Sardyk is located on the border of Russia and Mongolia and has attracted me by its name alone for more than a year. To get there, we need to go through the border checkpoint in the village of Mondy (don't forget about the pass !!!), turn left off the good asphalt leading to Mongolia, onto the gravel road towards the village of Orlik and drive about 23 km. And now we are almost there:

Orlik is still 130 km away
The reverse side of the sign is 22 km to the village. Mondy and 8, 5 km to Mount Munku-Saridak

I will make a reservation right away that we did not reach the mountain itself, we were not prepared even with the dog. Therefore, the article is called "unfinished gestalt"))) The height of the Munku-Sardyk mountain, according to the indexes, is 3491 meters, which is the largest peak in the Sayan Mountains.

I'll show you a little road, which in itself is worth taking a ride on it:

The Kultuk-Mondy road is quite picturesque
In May, along the Kultuk-Mondy road, we saw unfinished snow glaciers slowly descending into the river.
The bridge before the exit to the car parking (the way to Munku-Sardyk)

People usually come here in large companies, throw cars below, and further on the banks of the Irkut, closer to the main paths, set up tents and go into battle, around the neighborhood, wearing crampons.

We also went up the Irkut bed:

We got caught in the snow out of the blue on the road to Munku Sardyk

The weather is changeable - the snow is quickly replaced by the spring sun. You will not understand if you are cold or hot.

The ascents are protracted, the snow is a crumb of ice that painfully bites into the dog's paws (we, unfortunately, did not think about this), it is slippery in places, there are deep cracks. But, God, how cool it is here !!!

Deep cracks in the ice of Irkut

But here it was slippery:

If you look closely, the photo shows the base camps on the banks of the Irkut

So we got to the last point where walking without cats and helmets was no longer safe.

And the dots in the photo are climbers who climbed a frozen waterfall (they are definitely all right with their equipment))).

It's time to turn back, the road down is always easier and faster:

The way back

On the way back, we collected a lot of camel thorns, the thickets of which we found on the banks of the Irkut. I warn you, you must cut with thick gloves, otherwise you will get hurt.

And now I'll tell you more about the nuances:

1. If you are traveling for one day (as for an excursion), without equipment, tents, etc., then it is better to stay somewhere in, - you will get tired less from the road - spend more time on a walk. In 2010, when we came here “just to see”, we drove directly from Angarsk, arrived late, we felt tired from the road, while we were walking, it began to get dark. The second time was in 2015 - we left Arshan, and the rest, as a result, got more pleasure from the trip.

If you are traveling with an overnight stay, it is best to take a warm sleeping bag, a tent, do not forget about a rug, a burner - the nights in the mountains are cold. We saw how people went up to organize a camp for a large number of people - they pulled huge sledges with their luggage, brrr ...

2. The pass is an important thing. You can submit a request in advance to receive it through the State Service website and then no problems, everything is done quickly, correctly - the issued pass simply comes to your mail. This is what I did the last time. Or you can download the form, fill it out at home and issue a pass at the border - it takes longer, there may be queues - that is, you waste time, this, I think, is inconvenient.

3. They go here, mainly on the May holidays, for inexperienced tourists this is a plus, if something happens, you will not be left without help.

4. If you are going to climb - you must register with the Ministry of Emergencies (available in Kyren).

I don't know myself if I have the courage to go upstairs one day, but I will definitely come here more than once!

And finally, watch the video in our group

Climbing Munku-Sardyk is not just climbing a mountain, it is a place where you will know yourself and the world in a different way!
