Where is Zakynthos located? Holidays in Zakynthos

  • Last minute tours to Greece

Smelling with pine and rosemary, Zakynthos is the southernmost island of the Ionian archipelago. White yachts and groves of masts speak of how highly it is valued by the free tribe of yachtsmen. Zakynthos was once part of the kingdom of Odysseus, and today it is known to everyone for its uniquely beautiful landscapes and unnaturally azure-blue water.

The western rocky coast of the island with secluded bays and wild beaches is replete with panoramic platforms with views one better than the other. Its Navagio Bay is a favorite “photo model” of glossy magazines and is one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world.

The south of the island is given over to mass tourism. The local party resort of Laganas, with its wide beach and noisy parties, has long been firmly occupied by uninhibited British youth. But clubs and bars, competing with each other in the strength of musical decibels, do not scare away the rare caretta-caretta sea turtles living in the Gulf of Laganas, who allow tourists to come within arm's length of them.

How to get to Zakynthos

There are no direct regular flights from Russia to the island. From the end of May to the beginning of October you can fly there from Moscow Domodedovo on a charter flight with Nord Star Airlines (2 times a week, travel time 3.5 hours). From June to September, charters of the Greek Ellinair fly from St. Petersburg to Zakynthos (once a week, 4 hours).

The cheapest way to fly from Moscow to Zakynthos is with Aegean Airlines with a transfer in Athens. True, the journey in this case will take 17 hours. More expensive options compared to charters - with a transfer in Prague (Czech Airlines or Smart Wings, 10 hours), London (British Airways, 13 hours), Brussels (Brussels Airlines). From St. Petersburg you can fly with a transfer in Prague (Czech Airlines, 17 hours) or Munich (Lufthansa, 16 hours).

Dionysios Solomos International Airport is located 4 km from Zakynthos, the administrative center of the island. There is no public transport at the airport. A taxi to Zakynthos and the nearest resort towns of Argassi, Laganas and Kalamaki costs 24-28 EUR, to Planos - 38 EUR, to the port of Agios Nikolaos located in the north of the island - 66 EUR. Ferries

Zakynthos is connected by ferry to mainland Greece, the islands of the Ionian archipelago and Italian Brindisi. Ferries from the shipping companies K/X Ionian Group (office site in English) and Kefalonian Lines (office site in English) run from the port of Kyllini in the Peloponnese to the port of Zakynthos. During the summer season they make up to 10 flights per day. The first ferry to Zakynthos leaves at 6:45, the last at 21:00, travel time is 1 hour. The fare is 9.50 EUR per person and 39.20 EUR for an economy class car.

The ferry is a convenient option to get to Zakynthos for those who fly into mainland Greece airports and travel around the country in a rented car.

Transport

KTEL buses (office site in English) regularly run between Zakynthos, Laganas, Argassi, Kalamaki and other towns of the island. The schedule is posted at stops and varies depending on the season and day of the week - there are fewer flights on weekends. The driver takes the fare, the cost of the trip is 1.80-3.60 EUR.

Unfortunately, keeping to the schedule is not one of the virtues of bus drivers. Being 15-20 minutes late is common.

From the central bus station KTEL (Iatrou Mothonaiou, 29100) intercity buses depart to Athens (4-5 times a day, travel time including ferry crossing is 6 hours, ticket costs 29 EUR), Patra (3-4 times a day , 9 EUR) and Thessaloniki (1-2 times a week, 55 EUR). Ferry travel is paid separately.

Taxi

Taxis can be called by phone, ordered online, or taken at special stands in popular tourist destinations. The cost of a short trip is 25 EUR. To explore the island on your own, you can take a taxi with a time fee: 40 EUR/hour.

Cruises around the island start from the port of Zakynthos, prices start from 30 EUR. Navalio Bay and the Blue Grottoes can be reached by boat from the port of Agios Nikolaos or from Cape Skinari in the north of the island, the cost is 10-20 EUR.

Bicycles for rent

Short distances and good roads have turned the island into a convenient place for cycling. You can rent a road or mountain bike at street rental points in resort areas and in a good half of the hotels. The price of pleasure is 7-10 EUR per day.

Rent a Car

The best assistant for those who want to see the most beautiful views of the island is a car. At the airport there are counters of international rental companies Avis, Hertz, Sixt, etc., in Zakynthos, Lagonas, Kalamaki and Argassi - offices of local companies Faros, Auto-Moto Sakis, Giant Rentals, etc. with lower prices. In addition, a car can be ordered at the reception in many hotels.

Unlike international ones, Greek rental companies allow payment in cash. You can even bargain with them a little.

During the season, it is better to book a car in advance. Otherwise, there is a risk of not getting a car of the required class. It is worth considering that the roads in the interior of the island are very narrow and winding in places, which creates difficulties when driving large vehicles. Another problem is the clearly insufficient number of road signs and indicators, so a navigator will not be superfluous. But there are no problems with traffic jams (they are very rare) and free parking (you can leave your car in any place where there are no prohibitory signs).

The greatest danger on the roads is posed by young Britons riding quad bikes, who came to the island to have fun and get weird in all available ways.

Zakynthos Hotels

There is a suitable hotel in Zakynthos for everyone. Tourists accustomed to comfort are welcome in one and a half dozen mini-state-like “fives” with large, well-groomed territories and infrastructure that allows you to completely forget about everything that happens outside their borders. True, at the peak of the season, such “forgetfulness” costs no less than 250 EUR for a double room. 4* hotels are not much inferior to their more “star” counterparts in terms of quality of service and infrastructure, but in terms of prices - from 140 EUR, they undoubtedly have an advantage.

Regardless of the number of “stars” and even in their complete absence, all hotels and apartments on the island have free Wi-Fi and parking.

A compromise choice is 3* hotels, usually with a restaurant and a swimming pool. The lack of spa and fitness centers and the small area are more than compensated for by the affordable room rates: 80-120 EUR. The cheapest accommodation option (from 40 EUR) are apartments and guesthouses located a 15-20 minute walk from the sea.

Beaches of Zakynthos

One of the undoubted advantages of the island is its beaches. Sandy and pebbly, large and small, framed by rocks and pine trees, settled and completely wild, different from each other and very beautiful. The noisiest and most crowded is the densely packed Laganas beach with numerous bars and taverns. The main contingent is European youth 17-25 years old. Neighboring Kalamaki is for more respectable vacationers who prefer a comfortable, leisurely holiday.

The stunningly beautiful Navagio Beach can only be reached by sea. The beach is completely wild - there are no umbrellas, no toilets, no fast food sellers here. At times it can be “overpopulated” due to the large number of passengers from the boats that have sailed here.

The best time for photography is from 15:00 to 17:00, when the bay is fully illuminated by the sun and the water takes on a very beautiful color.

Shallow water Banana Beach with a relaxed, serene atmosphere is the largest on the Vasilikos peninsula and is well suited for families. The water here is clean and warm, there are sun loungers, umbrellas, changing cabins, showers, cafes and restaurants. Children's entertainment includes water slides and banana rides.

The cost of renting two sun loungers and an umbrella on the beaches of Zakynthos is 4-9 EUR.

The cozy Xigia beach with turquoise water is a real natural outdoor spa. Sulfur springs rich in collagen flow into the sea right off the coast, which have a healing, rejuvenating and anti-cellulite effect. The only inconvenience is the smell of hydrogen sulfide, which, however, you quickly get used to. High above the beach there is a tiny cafe with Greek cuisine, ice cream, soft drinks and a “magic” basket on a rope that allows you to lower everything ordered directly to the beach.

But this is unnecessary

What to bring

The main “heroines” of the local souvenir counters are the Caretta-Caretta turtles: large and small, made of ceramics, glass or wood, on T-shirts, mugs, magnets. And rarely does a child leave Zakynthos without a soft plush turtle.

Cafes and restaurants in Zakynthos

From expensive restaurants and family taverns with national cuisine to pizzerias and budget fast food eateries, it is easy to find catering establishments of any price category in Zakynthos. The most delicious breakfast - in the nearest bakery and pastry shop with a cup of Greek coffee and freshly baked “tiporita”, “spanakorita” or “bougatsa” (in other words, pies with cheese, spinach and custard), will cost no more than 5 EUR.

For lunch, choose a coastal tavern that serves Greek salad, marinated octopus, moussaka, souvlaki, fried sea bream with excellent house wine. There are also colorful village taverns in the central part of the island. The food there is prepared according to grandmother’s recipes, and hardly anyone can resist the temptation to try spit-roasted pig or “stifado” - meat stewed in wine, onions and cinnamon. The pleasure gained from such a dinner is much higher than the 15 EUR paid for it.

You can feel like a real gourmet in the pretentious restaurants of Zakynthos, Laganas or Kalamaki with original cuisine, exquisite interior, excellent service, beautiful views and live music. True, dinner with a glass of good wine here will cost about 30 EUR.

One of the most popular in Zakynthos is the Ole-Ole restaurant with home cooking, a family atmosphere, reasonable prices and incredibly large portions (office site in English). It is appreciated by men who love to eat a lot and tasty, and their companions who watch their figure - one serving of Greek salad is enough for two.

Entertainment and attractions

Rocks stretching into the water, blue grottoes, pine-covered shores - the architect of the main attractions of Zakynthos is Her Majesty Nature.

From early morning, a whole flotilla of boats sets off on sightseeing cruises along the coast. It is from the water that Zakynthos appears in all its splendor. The routes for boat trips are very diverse. In 8 hours you can go around the entire island on a boat stylized as a pirate sailing ship. Or you can limit yourself to visiting the famous Navagio Bay: sheer cliffs surrounding the small beach on all sides make this natural wonder inaccessible from the shore. On the snow-white sand lies the rusty wreck of the ship "Panagiotis", hence the name of the bay, translated as "Shipwreck".

Remember Eduard Bagritsky - “three Greeks are bringing contraband to Odessa”? So - “Panagiotis” secretly transported a cargo of cigarettes from Turkey to Italy, but ran aground and was thrown ashore by the waves. They say that the cigarettes found in its holds were enough for all the smokers on the island for six months.

The northern coast of Zakynthos in the area of Cape Skinari is riddled with arches and grottoes, where you can swim by boat. Piercing turquoise water, reflecting from the white arches, fills them with an incredible blue glow. Another Keri caves are located in the southwest of Zakynthos in the Gulf of Laganas. Opposite them lies the small island of Marathonisi, favored by the giant caretta-caretta sea turtles for laying eggs. You can see them in their natural habitat during “turtle” cruises or on your own from a rented boat.

A trip deep into the island through vineyards and olive groves with a tour of natural beauty, ancient temples, monasteries, wineries and villages with a traditional way of life also promises a lot of interesting things. The largest of them, the village of Katastari, is one of the few that survived the devastating earthquake of 1953 and has preserved many old buildings. The patron saint of the island, Dionysius of Zakynthos, lived for 20 years in the tiny monastery of Our Lady of Anaphonigria, with an area the size of a city apartment. His relics in a silver shrine are in a temple built in his honor on the waterfront of the city of Zakynthos. They say that Saint Dionysius, helping people, continues to walk around the island, which is why his slippers get dirty and washed out. They are periodically replaced with new ones, and pieces of the old ones are distributed to parishioners.

Weather

Zakynthos lies in the temperate Mediterranean climate zone. There is more rainfall here in winter than in the rest of Greece, making it a very green island. Even in cold January, the temperature does not drop below +11 °C. In March, spring comes to the island in all its colors and it becomes clear why Zakynthos is called the flower of the East.

In June, vacationers begin to fill it, and the water warms up to quite comfortable levels. Temperatures and housing prices peak in August. Thanks to the abundance of greenery and a light breeze, the summer heat is easier to bear than on the mainland, but air conditioning in the room will not be amiss. September is the best time in Zakynthos: the sea is still warm and the air temperature drops slightly. Housing prices only fall in October. In November, the weather deteriorates and prolonged rains finally “wash away” all tourists from the island.

Island Zakynthos gives its guests indescribable memories and impressions. The coexistence of mountains and the clear azure sea, sandy beaches and pine forests captivates the hearts of tourists once and for all. Zakynthos - capital Zakynthos region, whose shores are washed by Ionian Sea.

According to legend, the inhabitants of Zakynthos fought in the war with Troy on the side of Odysseus. For a long time, the island of Zakynthos was under Greek influence, but at the end of the 1st millennium BC it was captured by the Roman legions. From that moment on, the Romans began to take advantage of both the rich natural resources of the island and its favorable geographical location. And this continued until the 5th century. n. e., when power over the island passed to Byzantium. From that moment on, such transfers of power and seizures of territory became quite commonplace for the island. The island was constantly attacked by barbarians and pirates. In the 15th century Venice owned the island in the 17th-18th centuries. There were battles between the Turks and the French for the right to rule. France eventually won, but later lost the island to Britain. And only by 1864 Zakynthos became officially part of Greece.

Climate and weather

The resort has a mild Mediterranean climate. The average summer temperature in Zakynthos is +27 °С. Even in August it is dry and a little cool here. In general, the climate of Zakynthos is favorable for holidays all year round. The island receives decent rainfall throughout the 12 months and has a high number of sunny days. That is why Zakynthos is literally surrounded by greenery.

Nature

Nature trails throughout the island of Zakynthos are much more popular than historical sightseeing. So, if you find yourself on this island, be sure to get to Navajo bays. You will not see such a luxurious picture in any movie! Right in the middle of the picturesque sandy beach lies a pirate ship from the last century.

Don't forget to include one more item in your trip - Blue Caves grottoes. The rays of the sun are reflected in the sea water, jumping along the arches of the grottoes and giving them a sky-blue color.

It's also worth checking out Zakynthos beach, which stretches along the coast of the Ionian Sea for 14 km. A real work of art will appear before you: stunning caves and grottoes, white rocks, clear blue water... It’s impossible not to admire it.

Attractions

National Marine Park Sanctuary with its typical Mediterranean ecosystem, it is the pride of all Zakynthos. It was created with the aim of preserving the natural diversity of the island. The park includes several beaches, each of which has its own distinctive feature. For example, Langas Bay is unique in that the rarest giant turtles Caretta-caretta lay their eggs there.

The island is also rich in man-made attractions; it delights tourists with its aristocratic sophistication, luxurious palaces and beautiful churches. Rising majestically above the sea Venetian fortress- symbol of Zakynthos. In the center of the island's capital are:

  • Church of St. George;
  • Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos;
  • Church of St. Nicholas;
  • Library.

Nutrition

Fans of Greek cuisine will certainly appreciate the restaurants of Zakynthos. But I would like to immediately note that the local establishments are not limited to only national cuisine. Many local restaurants, cafes and taverns also offer European, Chinese and Indian dishes. The best establishments with traditional Greek cuisine can rightfully be called:

  • Akrotiri;
  • Patari;
  • Poseidon;
  • Hermion.

And fish restaurants Popolaros And Andreas delight visitors immensely with live Greek music. Excellent seafood dishes can be tasted in the restaurant Komis Fish Tavern. Guests are welcomed here until late at night and, in addition to excellent cuisine, they offer an interesting entertainment program.

The hottest months - July and August - were chosen as the time for its holding, and the outdoor theater was chosen as the location. Dermatousa, standing on a mountain and surrounded by cypress trees. Other music and folklore festivals often take place here.

And young people consider the most popular clubs in Zakynthos Rescue in Lagan, and also Barrage And Factory in Zakynthos.

Purchases

The best shopping on the island is naturally in the capital. In Zakynthos you will not find huge shopping centers with hundreds of shops, boutiques and cafes. Shopping here has its own characteristics. Among the most popular purchases among tourists in Zakynthos are cosmetics and perfumes, handmade soap, sweets, olive oil and jewelry from local craftsmen.

The main shops and retail outlets are located on Alexandra Roma Street. Jewelry shops are located closer to St. Mark's Square. Here you will find famous brands and products from local jewelers. Many tourists prefer the second option. It is better to buy cosmetics in pharmacies.

Transport

The airport is located 4 km from the capital. Regular flights fly daily between Zakynthos and Athens. Greek port of Killini and Zakynthos are connected by sea. In the capital, public transport is represented by buses and taxis.

Connection

Many hotels in Zakynthos provide their guests with Wi-Fi Internet access. When choosing a hotel, pay attention to this parameter.

It is better to make calls from street telephone booths using payment cards. They can be purchased at newsstands. Calls from a hotel will cost more. In addition, keep in mind that from 8 pm to 7 am is a preferential time when calls are 30-40% cheaper.

You can always stay connected using a roaming connection. A more budget-friendly option would be to use a local operator's mobile communications. It is very easy to buy a SIM card and a top-up card in the city. The seller will help you with choosing a tariff plan and replenishing your account.

Safety

The beaches of Zakynthos are impeccably clean and are also considered the safest for families with children.

When walking around the city, make sure that your bag is closed and that the valuables in it do not attract pickpockets.

Real estate

Real estate on any Greek island will cost an order of magnitude higher than a similar option on the mainland. The small areas of the islands ensure maximum proximity of real estate to the sea. This characteristic of Greek real estate is attracting more and more buyers. Housing in Zakynthos is also prestigious, but unlike other islands, there are much more available offers here.

The route of almost all excursions includes a visit to the picturesque rock arches located at the northernmost point of the island. Despite the huge temptation to swim in this luxurious area Ionian Sea, tourists are in no hurry to do this, since the water temperature there is +14-15 °C.

By phone 166 you can call an ambulance. Tourist police phone number - 171 .

Capital: The capital and port of the island, the city of Zakynthos is located on the hills between the ancient fortress and the sea. Buildings and mansions of the characteristic terracotta color, built in the traditional spirit with loggias and Venetian porticoes, are carefully preserved here. We advise you to definitely take a walk along the Strata Marina promenade, the famous Ruge, the shopping center with its picturesque arches, and the tiled central St. Mark's Square, where it is always very lively. The Bohalis district, located directly below the Fortress, will charm you with its narrow, quiet coffee shops and restaurants where you can listen to ancient music. A fortress rises above Bohalis, offering beautiful views of the modern city and the Ionian Sea.

The island of Zakynthos has been known since prehistoric times; it was part of the Odyssean Kingdom. Homer calls it Wooded and considers it the first habitat of the son of the king of Phrygia Dardano - Zakynthos. As told in ancient myths, the ancient gods Apollo and Artemis walked around the island, fascinated by its beauty. Even in the distant past, thanks to its geographical position and large reserves of resin, the island experienced its political and commercial heyday. He took a neutral position in the war with the Persians, but fought on the side of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. Zakynthos has always had and maintains to this day a high level of culture. This is the birthplace of the national poet of Greece Dionysus Solomos, Ungo Foskolos, Xenopoulos. The influence of the Venetians, along with the Greek traditional way of life, served as the basis for the development of a special, sophisticated culture. All types of art developed rapidly on the island, so it is rightfully called the Florence of the East. Music runs in the blood of the island's inhabitants. The love for this type of art among the indigenous people has been noticed since ancient times, as evidenced by the worship of the islanders to the god of music Apollo. Already in the 15th century. under the influence of the Italians, theatrical art became widespread. In 1571, Aeschylus's play "The Persians" was staged for the first time. Today Zakynthos is one of the most important cultural centers of Greece. Every year, concerts and other performance events are held on the island. Most of the island's 44 villages maintain their traditional way of life. Tourism is developing taking into account the interests of local residents, who are preventing the construction of huge complexes so as not to disturb the natural beauty of the island. Here you will find only medium and small hotel facilities, where all modern amenities will be offered to your service. The largest number of vacationers in the summer is in the town of Lagana, located 11 km. south of the city of Zakynthos. Flowering plains there alternate with olive groves, vineyards and endless beaches. The famous Caretta-Caretta sea turtles live off the coast of Lagana. Another area of the island with developed tourism is Argassi, which is considered a favorite vacation spot for young people. Here you can spend your holiday fun and carefree. The Kalamaki area, located in the south of the island, is a quiet seaside corner with a wonderful sandy beach - a place where you can relax “soul and body”. The northeast of the island is represented by the village of Aliki, which attracts fans of family tourism with sandy beaches stretched along the entire coast and a shallow, safe sea. There are many opportunities for water sports enthusiasts. Near the village of Aliki there is a new rapidly developing summer holiday center called Alikanas. 16 km. southwest of the island's capital is Vasilikos, a small village with lush vegetation and crystal clear water, flowering lands and gardens, and sandy beaches. In the very south of the island is the tiny village of Keri Limni, which resembles the old town of Zakynthos. Built on top of a hill, surrounded by bright green slopes, with narrow streets and stone houses crowded together, it leaves a lasting impression. The view of the Ionian Sea and the “turtle island” of Marathonisi, located opposite the village, is amazing. The coastal waters of Limni Keri are rich in a variety of fish. Every sunset captivates everyone who has ever witnessed it in Kampi... From the heights of the hills, Zakynthos opens up from a new side: villages are surrounded by greenery, among them Volimes, a center of folk crafts, consisting of three settlements with ancient well-kept houses. From the highest point of the island there is an amazing view of the Ionian Sea all the way to Kefalonia! The islanders have a special attitude towards environmental protection, as evidenced by the vast territories of the island that have remained untouched and retained their pristine beauty, as well as the rare species of marine animals that have survived to this day and the crystal clearness of the coastal waters. The famous Mediterranean sea turtle Caretta-Caretta, which has lived for millions of years off the southern coast of Zakynthos, feels completely safe and lays its eggs on the sandy beaches of the island. The southwestern bays of Zakynthos are home to a rare species of black harbor seal, Monachus-Monachus.

The island is a natural and turtle sanctuary, and is rightfully considered the most romantic place in Greece. The endless sandy beaches of Zakynthos! In the northwestern part of the island are the famous Blue Caves.

Zakynthos is a beautiful island, a real jewel in the Greek crown of the islands. Its superb beaches, the unique Caretta-Caretta turtles, the incredible color of the sea water, ancient mansions from the Venetian era and the picturesque Navagio Bay, the symbol of the island, attract thousands of tourists every year.

Zakynthos belongs to the group of Ionian islands, it is located near the Peloponnese peninsula (9.5 nautical miles between them) and the island of Kefalonia is located 8.5 nautical miles away. More than 40 thousand people live on an area of 406 square meters.

The city of Zakynthos is the capital of the island. Thanks to the ancient mansions in the Venetian style, decorated with graceful loggias, arched galleries, intricate patterns of cobblestone roads, and beautiful squares, it looks like a Medieval city. Here you should definitely visit Bohali - the Venetian castle with its special atmosphere, as well as Strani Hill. It was here that Dionysios Solomos, the famous Greek poet, wrote the famous “Hymn to Freedom”.

The island is rich in various tourist spots popular with visitors from all over the world, including the stunning Cape Laganas. However, in addition, there are numerous other locations worth visiting, without which the names “Flower of Levante” and “Southern Venice” would not have formed in relation to Zakynthos. After enjoying the exotic sandy beaches and picturesque rocky bays, go to see the Kerya lighthouse in the village of Keri, and Ano Gerakaki, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding area. The mountain settlements of Exo Chora, Orfonies, Volimes are hidden in rich pine thickets, but it is here that the tourist will see the national houses of the local residents and feel the charming atmosphere of life in small settlements.

The east coast of the island is an ideal choice for a family holiday. There are numerous beautiful beaches covered with soft warm sand, blue sea water is crystal clear. Fresh greenery surrounding the area fills the air with aromas. There are various taverns nearby where you can relax with a delicious lunch and a glass of local wine.

The western lands, strewn with rocks, are different. Here you can enjoy the exquisite beauties of the island, but getting to the beaches is problematic. Those who managed to reach the sea should be careful in the water because of stones and broken rocks. So it will be dangerous to go here with children.

Gerakas is the beach of Zakynthos, which has become a real landmark of the island. Children will like it here, because this is where you can meet cute inhabitants - sea turtles. The animals come straight to people, so the kids will remember this trip forever. This place is also famous for clay sculptures created by the elements.

Laganas Beach has been declared a national park because it is home to the unique Caretta-Caretta turtles. To avoid harming animals, boat traffic is prohibited in the waters of the bay. It is worth noting that you will not be able to watch turtles around the clock: the beach closes half an hour before sunset.

Attractions Zakynthos

The first settlers in the capital of the island of Zakynthos appeared in ancient times. The major earthquake of the last century, which destroyed many buildings, still left many beautiful historical and cultural monuments, so tourists will be able to meet them while walking around the city.

The capital's Venetian mansions attract attention with their exquisite architecture, decorative elements, loggias and arches, as well as bright ocher walls. While walking around Zakynthos, it is worth visiting the 16th century Monastery of Agios Dionysius. It has been preserved almost in its original form. The monastery houses the relics of the patron saint of Zakynthos. According to local legends, Dionysius walks around the island at night.

The central square Platia Solomou accommodates two attractions at once. There is a monument to Dionysius Solas, as well as the Church of St. Nicholas. In addition, on the main square of the city there is the Byzantine Museum, the collection of which includes unique monuments of Greek church painting, covering the period from antiquity to the end of the 19th century. Damascene, Doxaras, Dzanes, Koutouzis, Kallergis - the works of these masters are a striking example of the iconography of Zakynthos. The museum also houses sculptures from the Hellenistic period and the Byzantine era, which will be interesting for tourists to see.

St. Mark's Cathedral is located on the square of the same name, where you can also visit the museum of the poet D. Solomonos and other famous residents of Zakynthos. Walking along Filikon Street, the Church of St. George attracts attention. This is a famous architectural monument that played an important role for the independence of the Greek state. “Filiki Eteria”, the secret club that organized the uprising of 1821, swore allegiance within the walls of this church.

There is a Venetian fortress on Bokhari Hill. Once upon a time there stood the acropolis of Psofis, a structure from the era of Ancient Greece. However, the Venetian rulers destroyed the building almost to the ground. The fortress was built over several centuries: the first stones were laid in the 12th century, and the final work was carried out only in 1646. The size of the fortress is not its only striking feature. The sophistication and laconicism of the details is truly amazing. For many years it was the central defensive point that saved the island from pirate raids, so the air is still saturated with military spirit. In addition to its historical importance, tourists will be interested in visiting the fortress for the incredible view of Zakynthos, which opens from the top of the hill.

You can feel the greatness of the sea element at the Milano Maritime Museum, which is located in the village of Tsilivi. The exhibition contains comprehensive information about the centuries-old maritime events of the Greeks. The Verzaio Agricultural Museum will tell you about the life and customs of Greek farmers and reveal the secrets of the traditions of the island’s population. The tourist will be able to see household items, furniture, as well as handicrafts by Zakynthos craftsmen. The age of individual objects in the collection is 400 years. Another famous museum on the island is the Helmis Natural History Museum, the exhibition of which includes about 500 exhibits that reveal the special world of animals, plants of the island, and the unique species that live here.

A short distance from Zakynthos, in the mountains, is the Church of Our Lady of Anafonithria. This church monument is interesting for its history. Legends say that a local resident of the 15th century discovered an icon emitting rays of light in waves. On the site of this wonderful find, a church and a monastery were erected.

The 13th century Metamorfosi Sotiros monastery, which stands on the neighboring island of Stamfanio, was partially restored after a devastating earthquake in the 50s of the 20th century.

Mycenaean burials are unique, their age exceeds 4 millennia. The graves at Campi are still of interest to scientists all over the world. They are located above sea caves, and the artifacts found here became the most important historical discovery.

Cuisine of Zakynthos

Local dishes are an example of how Greek cuisine can amaze the imagination. Traditional cooking methods and fresh ingredients make each dish a real feast of taste. The most important ingredient in local cuisine is, of course, olive oil. Tomatoes, lemons, aromatic garlic and various seasonings are also often used to imbue food with wonderful aromas.

It is better to look for real local cuisine further away from the iconic places of the island. It is there that the taverns serve truly traditional dishes, albeit not as quickly as in the center of the capital. Technologies are carefully preserved, and therefore small villages can surprise even gourmets with their cuisine.

Sarza is a must on a gastronomic trip to Zakynthos. It contains beef, tomatoes, Ladotiri sheep cheese and garlic. Those who have experienced this taste will remember the impressions of this “trick” of the island for a long time. Skordostubi, consisting of tomatoes, eggplants, olive oil with the addition of garlic, has gained no less popularity. Like many Greek lands, there is excellent myzithra cheese. It can be fresh or salty, but the rule for its use is standard: add honey or sugar. True connoisseurs of delicious dishes recommend Zakynthian rabbit cooked in tomato sauce.

Tzatziki sauce is traditional in Greece and is also served in Zakynthos. Pay attention to the various pastries with fillings: tropitakia filled with feta or turopita, puff pastries with cheese, meat, spinach, and gyros. This local snack is very nutritious because it contains French fries, tomatoes, fresh herbs and a colorful sauce.

Order the Horiyatiki. And yes, they will bring you a classic Greek salad: this is the name it bears in its homeland. However, after trying it, you may not recognize the famous dish. Fresh products make the taste sparkle in a new way.

It is worth adding stifado to the list - this is veal cooked with onions and tomato sauce, as well as souvlaki. Papoutsakia, jovetsi - these words should complete the plans for this trip so that Greece remains in the heart forever. Those with a sweet tooth will not be left without pleasant dishes: mandolato will be a real discovery. A mixture of eggs, almonds, honey - nutritious and very tasty. Or, for example, pastel - it is similar to mandolato, only sesame is added instead of egg. Baklava, nougat, kurabye, various varieties of honey - lovers of sweets will be delighted.

Coffee lovers should not leave the island without trying Greek coffee. If you want to drink it with sugar, then order picro or be-metrio, and those who drink their coffee very sweet take glyco. The traditional ritual of drinking coffee is to drink this invigorating drink very slowly, so that the bottom is covered with aromatic sediment. Tea is not popular in Zakynthos. But there are a lot of different fresh juices here. Of course, it’s worth trying the local wine, which you won’t find anywhere else. The export of this drink is not accepted, so to enjoy it away from Zakynthos, bring a bottle as a souvenir. Tourists also like to order ouzo, aniseed vodka, or Metaxa cognac.

Features of Zakynthos

Be careful with gestures! Local residents use them very actively in communication, and each has a special meaning. Nodding your head here means denial, so at first you will have to get used to it. But if the Greeks accompany nodding with the clicking of their tongues, then this is a clear manifestation of skepticism.

It is customary here to shake hands at the first meeting, and further meetings begin with a kiss on both cheeks, and the gender of the interlocutor is unimportant. Get ready for raised voices - such an expressive manner is quite normal for Greek culture. If you decide to support the condemnation of Greece, be prepared for negative consequences. Local residents cannot stand such statements from foreigners.

Surrounded by the Ionian Sea, the island of Zakynthos is a popular tourist destination. Rising above the expanse of the emerald sea, lush with the greenery of olive groves and vineyards, and surprising with snow-white cliffs, this island simply resembles a piece of paradise. At least according to the reviews of those who visited Zakynthos, Greece leaves a vivid impression in the memory. We suggest checking this out with the help of a virtual tour: in the article we will look at the sights, beaches and natural features of the island. And after such a brief acquaintance, most likely, it will come to a real trip.

Zakynthos Island - general information

Let's start with geographical information. The island of Zakynthos, part of the Ionian archipelago, is located in northeastern Greece. The area of the island is 408 km², and according to this indicator, Zakynthos ranks third after Kerkyra and Kefalonia. The island's topography consists of two mountain ranges, between which lies a vast valley. The coast of Zakynthos is indented with rocky coves and bays, and the total length of the coastline is 123 km.

It is noteworthy that in Greek Zakynthos is both an island and at the same time the name of its capital. However, this practice is not surprising for Greece, since similar names are typical for many islands and their capitals ( e.g. Corfu, Rhodes, Aegina). To avoid confusion, we will focus on the more “tourist” name Zakynthos. But remember the word “Zakynthos” as a synonym, so that if something happens you don’t get confused when you hear such a term in the speech of the Greeks.

History of Zakynthos

Like many Greek regions, Fr. Zakynthos has a long and checkered history. According to legend, the first settlement here was founded by Zakynthos, the ruler of Arcadia and the son of King Dardan. The image of this brave man still adorns the banner of the periphery. Later, the island was recaptured by Odysseus’s grandfather, so the inhabitants of Zakynthos also took part in the famous Trojan Battle. But during the Greco-Persian wars, the island prudently maintained neutrality, so with the arrival of the Romans, Zakynthos received autonomy.

With the advent of our era, a series of changes in power began in the life of Zakynthos. At different periods, the island was ruled by the Byzantines, Normans, French and English, but the greatest contribution to development and culture was made by the Venetians. Even to this day, the Italian designation "Zante" is listed alongside the Hellenic "Zakynthos" in dictionaries and encyclopedias. And the island returned to its native blue and white flag in 1864, when the British, under pressure from the indigenous inhabitants, ceded the territory to the recently revived Greek state.

Nature and climate on the island

Zakynthos has a temperate Mediterranean climate. Winters are warm and with heavy rainfall, and summers are hot and dry. Since the island belongs to the northern part of the country, the main peak of the tourist season occurs in July, August and September, when the waters of the Ionian Sea warm up to +30°C. The same value on the thermometer is also typical for warming up the land, but thanks to the vegetation, there is no stuffiness and heat in Zakynthos. It rains 1-2 days per month, and even then the precipitation is quite scanty.
